Does anyone understand how Amazon's sort methods work?

You look at a single sellers inventory right, so there are in theory no alternate prices for most items.  All items are prime shipping and no tax, so the price shown is the actual price.  You do sort by price: low to high.  First item is $10, second is $2, third is $1, fourth is $3, and so on and so forth with weirdly fluctuating prices.
