I know for a fact the "Halo: Combat Evolved" is backwards compatible with my Xbox360. My guess most Xbox original games should work on the xbox360's unless I'm mistaken :-\

Besides your external hard drive, does your 360 also have an internal one? As that's required for the 360's backwards compatibility; an external one won't work as the system just considers it to be a glorified memory card.

First, what storage did your system have before you added the 500GB drive?  Is it an external storage device?

In order to play original Xbox games you need to utilize the original storage device your system had.  The original Xbox games run via emulation and each game has a emulation profile that is saved to the HDD.

If your Xbox 360 is a 4GB "E" model you will need to buy a 250GB internal Xbox drive before you can play original Xbox games.  It has to be an official 360 HDD.  If you have a generic HDD that you have formatted and put in there it will not play original Xbox games.
