Could this be a Demo/Prototype?
« on: April 23, 2012, 08:52:34 pm »
So I picked up a game that didn't look...um...normal tonight. I'm wondering if it could be a prototype. It has several characteristics that have me thinking it could be.

1) The "label"
2) There are random numbers written on the cart itself.
3) There are stickers on the inside of the case.

Could I have stumbled upon a gem or is this simply a game with a really curious history?

Potentially, though it could be a review copy, too. I'd check in with Assembler Games and/or Digital Press.

My guess is that it was just a rental copy but I could be wrong

I considered that it could be a random rental but the sticker on it is really on there. Plus, what random rental place has a sticker that just happens to say "Prehistoric Man" and happens to be just about the right size to fit on the cart? Granted, the game itself is called "Prehistorik Man", but if it is a demo of sorts (pretty sure it's not a proto as the board has the correct product ID), they could have sent it out before they dropped the C and added the K.

Also, I don't know what's up with the stickers on the inside of the cart. I've opened several SNES games in the past and never seen one inside the case.

Yeah. Another thing that makes me think it's a demo if anything. I couldn't find any sort of debug menu.

It's not a prototype. The game board looks fairly normal and doesn't have any EEPROM chips on it.

That looks like a rental cart to me.

Oh yeah, forgot to post. I threw it up on NA and the consensus is that it was a blockbuster rental.

Any explanation as to where the sticker came from?

It could be a sticker with a metal part under it. The stuff that makes alarms go off.

I have found these and other stickers on the inside of some of my NES games, that's what I assumed they are.  I have a bad habit of opening every game I get to see what's inside.  I have also been guilty of putting fortune cookie fortunes inside copies of Duck Hunt and donating them to thrift stores.

The guys at NA said it looked exactly like a blockbuster sticker.
