Are You _______ About Someone Knowing Your IP Address

All I know is that by knowing a reverse DNS or an IP you can look it up to see where that number connection is coming from,

 I need advice. if someone knows my IP address could they send a virus directly to my computer and catch it on fire? I heard that was possible, my IP is public and I look up IP addresses just to see where my what city my listeners are from, I don't hack them, I don't send them viruses, I am just curious, is this wrong? it says it is not illegal, but I don't want someone destroying my equipment because I looked up their hidden reverse DNS.

why do i do this because I run a radio station with an app that is completely garbage that says people are tuned in but it does even give me a correct country just a fake IP with a fake country location

I use an IP lookup tool, then i look up a reverse DNS, I just want to know who was just listening to my radio station for sometimes 8 hours a day is this wrong? what are the dangers of someone knowing my IP and than getting all pissy and then catching my equipment on fire, this has happened before to a different computer and I don't want this to happen to my studio. Because I looked up a public IP that was behind a google cloud in the UK


all this is is a number what what city a person is from, not a house not buinuess I don't care where they are from I just wanted to say what part of the world most of my listeners are from, by default I can see a fake IP and a location that says US but no it's not anywhere close, if i look it up, I know it's fake because it uses Axios app and that hides all listeners IP's and makes it so you can't even see what part of the planet your listeners are from

I do however have security on my devices, but why do people hide their device locations? it's only just a number and a aerial location like a city, not a physical address or street location, I am aware someone said it is possible to see exactly where any device is in the world but if you are not on a covert operation  on the planet mars who cares if someone knows who is connected to their own property or computers.

I did research on a VPN and I don't see the point in buying one but maybe I am stupid. But if someone wanted to send a virus out to a ramdom IP I'm sure it would be widespread. My name is not on my IP so I don't know why I need to hide it from hackers. Your talking to a man who is a cyberbully victim also that is how my computer was caught on fire before

Like why would you hide your IP from a radio station? Only I can see the fake IP and I believe I deserve to since they are connected to my station and using my computer, and I will never ban them can't even if I tried to, and nobody cares if ip 0.0.0.0 is turned in to a public station anyway, nobody with that IP ever tuned in but I am just making an example of a fake IP

I work in IT Security so I'll educate you a little but on how IPs work.


You technically have two IP addresses; a private IP that is given to your computer by your router and then another public IP for when you're on the internet. You private IP is only known to you and your ISP, and is typically protected by some sort of firewall on your router. Virtually all newer routers have a built in firewall, so does your computer unless you're running some custom version of Linux that doesn't have it. Bottom line is your computer's identity is safe and no one can just send you a virus or take control of your computer just by knowing your public IP. Yes, public IP's say a lot about where you are geographically, but if you really want to protect yourself get a VPN like Nord VPN. You can use the VPN as a proxy so whatever website you visit thinks you are somewhere entirely different than where you actually are. You can also use Tor if you're also looking for anonymity online.


Being completely private online is impossible however; if someone really, really wanted to know who you are and where you've been they can figure it out. And I'm not talking about some random internet user or even 99% of hackers. I'm talking the government. There have been some high profile busts on the dark web despite the anonymity of Tor. Likewise, most governments will force a VPN provider to give up your IP and history if you're up to some really illegal stuff. This happened to Protonmail, but more specifically with their email service.


Despite this you can still be 99ish% private, especially from web admins or hosting services with some of the stuff I mentioned above. Again, unless you're up to some very illegal stuff and catch the attention of the FBI or someone like that you're probably okay.

Fun fact: did you know there's a massive secret data center near my hometown in a remote region of Canada? Of course you didn't, even the common inhabitants of my hometown aren't aware of it. I had the misfortune of being a little too exploratory with my late night drives when I got my first car at 18. One night I'm exploring the outskirts of the town and I notice that there's a large plot of land somewhere which is all fenced-off and the building is very far away (there's a lot of open space between the fences and the building). As I stay in front of the gates with my car, I also notice that weirdly the windows of that building are very reflective, we can't see inside no matter what.

Then an armed man comes out of the building and approaches me. I must leave, but I was still very curious so I was eventually explained by someone what this place was. According to them it's literally the largest data center in Canada, and the reason why it was in such a remote region is because our cold climate is ideal for these kind of servers. And these windows, they say, are made out of Titanium and are resistant to all types of firearms and even some explosives. I'm not going to reveal where that data center is though, the government is probably already watching me just for making this post lol

Anyway, back when I joined the forums and was getting acquainted with the place, I remember coming across some of your posts and feeling conflicted whether treating you as someone with "problems" or just a troll. I reckon that may not be a nice thing to say outright, but you make it hard for people to read you otherwise with the way you word your posts and go about certain topics, to sometimes being outlandish and even flying off the rails, so at times it seems like you're doing what you do for attention. I don't know if you have a disorder or are on the spectrum, or maybe even have Asperger's, which doesn't seem to be the case, but in all honesty, and I don't mean any disrespect, I think if you're too mentally impaired and things online get to you easily, then you shouldn't be using the Internet...or at the very least should avoid places that could potentially be strenuous for you mentally.
