Old Youtube gaming channels/videos nostalgia thread
« on: September 18, 2024, 12:26:19 am »
Despite having several important things I need to take care of at the moment, I found myself mostly idle tonight, which at one point led me to wonder what some of the gaming youtube channels I used to watch regularly and even subscribe to were up to these days. It led me down a bitter sweet rabbit hole of realizing that many of the gaming Youtube channels I used to love are either completely gone, haven't seen new uploads in years, or new videos are still uploaded, but typically no more than a handful a month. Very few of them are still releasing videos at the rate they once were, which I found pretty sad. It made me even more sentimental when I realized that many of these videos I used to watch from some of these channels are now as old as people entering high school right now or even learning how to drive.

What video game youtube channels did you used to watch regularly, which ones do you still watch, and which ones are you sad are no longer active?

While many of the individual channels that made it up are still out there creating new videos, it's crazy how Retroware TV completely fell apart to where their channel is now essentially a merch store and nothing else. I remember they were my second goto place outside of Gametrailers to find interetsing video game content by various really talented creators. The usual suspects like Pat the NES Punk are still mostly active, but channels like Clan of the Gray Wolf are pretty much dead now. There are other former Retroware creators like Pushing Up Roses who is still pretty active and popular, but all her content mostly revolves around TV and movies now, and less about gaming.

Another channel/website that I was absolutely in love with is Gametrailers. Gametrailers has been defunct for nearly a decade now, but luckily most of their countdowns, reviews, retrospectives, and other original content is still on Youtube. Their videos are still among the most nostalgic for me, and ones I regularly binge even though I've seen most of them dozens of times. I get that Youtube kind of stole their lunch, but it's too bad they couldn't have gone on existing just as a Youtube channel and not their own hosting platform. I know many of the people that used to run Gametrailers now do Easy Allies, but their videos just aren't as good as they were when they were Gametrailers. This one being gone still hurts the most.

There are a few smaller channels I used to watch all the time that are mostly all either dead, something very different than they once were, or post very infrequently. Some of these include channels like The Retro Hunters, Charge Back Forward, Alpha Omega Sin, and Pete Dorr.

I found Roses through her Murder, She Wrote recaps.  Those are a lot of fun.  She's on a gaming podcast now that I forget the name of, and she did recently post a couple of point and click videos.

I had to unsub from WhatCulture Gaming because they were just factually wrong about stuff all the time.  I'm pretty sure it was just engagement bait, but they would never acknowledge just how wrong they were about certain things.  The only WhatCulture channel worth anything these days is probably the Star Trek one, because it is the only one that seems reasonably well-researched.

The two channels I follow that seem to generally still put out content at a regular clip are outsidexbox and PlayStation Access (and PA recently started a Star Trek podcast as well), but even they have kind of slowed their output a bit.  The smaller channels I followed have all definitely slowed their output, sometimes for real life concerns, but RabbidLuigi, PeanutButterGamer, and SilokHawk all seem to barely be putting anything out anymore.  And that's not including anybody who got sidelined by controversy (like The Completionist whose content was going downhill anyway).

I never understood the popularity of WhatCulture. They try to do a jack of all trades but their lack of knowledge is obvious. The worst is their wrestling channel, they make so many mistakes it's shocking, like for example claiming that World Class Championship Wrestling was located in Florida, when it was actually in Dallas, Texas (the legendary von Erich family territory)

As for old: AVGN was fun until around 2013, before Screenwave got in and he got lazy and showed that he just doesn't care much about games. Spoony is another one who was hilarious (his Swat 4 LP is legendary) but seemingly fell on really hard times. Pushing Up Roses was ok before all the drama, she is one of the worst on social media, to the point where i can understand why DHI is making fun of her.

Yogscast is another old on. Shadow of Israphel was probably one of the most creative Minecraft story/lp's way back until they just dropped it. Then there was all that drama, sexual harrassment stuff, i stopped following them.

The only ones i still follow are Civvie11, Accursed Farms, MandaloreGaming and Ahoy, the latter only does a video every few months or so, but the are always high quality.

I loved Game Grumps back in 2013 when JonTron was still part of the show. After he left it fell apart quickly. Egoraptor is an egomaniac. I ran into him twice in downtown LA (when I used to live in SoCal) and he acts like a megastar. Just doesn't care about the fans. I watch JonTron still despite him moving away from gaming years ago. He rarely uploads, but they're great shows.

Caddicarus is someone who used to upload ages ago and has gotten better over time. He changed his format to quarterly single episodes that run nearly 2 hours long.

AVGN is a soulless garbage fire now. The controversy on that show is daily and he fell off after Screenwave took over. He's just not funny anymore.

Scott the Woz is one of my favorites. He's topped AVGN if you ask me. His humor is consistent and he actually cares about games and is passionate about it. Every video is always different and he actually makes me laugh.

There's other like Stop Skeletons From Fighting, Shesez, DidYouKnowGaming.

GVMERS is an insanely underrated documentary style channel. They mostly cover HD era games (PS3 and Xbox 360) and that channel is fantastic.

Of course, there's LGR. He's more PC tech than games, but retro PC gaming is the main staple there. Always fascinating stuff.

RMC - The Cave is fantastic if you love 8-bit retro PC gaming

Sega Lord X is a great channel for reviews and anything Sega

GameSack is a highly underrated channel that talks about compilations and best-ofs on systems. I'm surprised he doesn't have more subscribers after a decade on YT.

There's Slope's Game Room - investigatory style video game history and scam busting

There's a lot of quality channels out there, but a lot of them are schlocky and anyone who starts with "What's up guys. It's your boy XXX" immediately gets ignored.

I used to watch a guy named AlphaOmegaSin. Long hair metal dude that had a very "basement game cave" vibe with this feel that was hard to put a thumb on. Really felt like you were hanging out in a friends basment cave. He had a great collection. He stopped posting.

I also really miss GTA IV rick roll videos. Hated them at the time. Anyone remember "spawn sultan rs in gta IV" or "100 kill glitch call of duty world at war CANT GET HIT x5xp" just for it to be a rick roll. They sucked at the time but boy do I miss being rick rolled.

I'm pretty sure I've watched a few videos from WhatCulture, but can't remember anything specific. But from what you're describing, they sound a lot like Watchmojo. I feel like Watchmojo is a good baby's first gaming youtube channel, but it's kind of the same thing where you're getting questionable countdowns and a lot of wikipedia info regurgitated.

Oh man! Love Sega Lord X. I feel like the two of us are into 90% the same games. He's one I still currently watch on a regular basis.

AlphaOmegaSin was a casualty of the Youtube adpocolyps back in the mid 2010s. His channel got nuked by youtube and he became more or less un-monetizable, so his videos got buried. It's crazy because I found him when he was at about 10k subs and loved watching his videos after work all the time. His channel began to get a little tiresome towards the end when all he wanted to do was make Gamergate outrage vids, but I still enjoyed his work for the most part. But yeah, he just vanished shortly after the ad debacle. He would appear in random Game Chasers episodes after that, and once in a blue moon resurfaces to talk about some game he's really excited about, but I doubt we'll ever have regular AOS again. They guy seemed super cool, definitely the type of guy I could see myself befriending and talking games all the time.

Damn, that sucks. I wish he'd make a comeback. I used to watch him after I got bored of metaljesusrocks when he got too commerical and started relying too heavy on twitch streamer cameos. AVGN can only upload so much and I needed some quality retro fix. I remember people saying AOS died so im glad he's at least alive and gaming. Glad to have read this.

He had a lot of niche games I never heard of and he really did seem approachable. We could really use more gamers that can give that old school gamer friend from the late 90s dungeons and dragons, metal and hot pockets vibe. I miss it. I ddint expect anyone here to know him. Pretty cool

I mostly watched and tended to prefer a lot of the early vlogger-type channels, like 2008-2011 era. Many of which never took off or made any kind of real splash. Mostly under a thousand subs type channels. Those were the ones that initially inspired me to get back into retro and get into collecting. The biggest and most notable being of course PeteDorr. He was a big inspiration for me to consider getting into what was modern gaming and collecting for modern consoles at that time. He really piqued my curiosity with the Nintendo DS. There were several small vlogger channels with a focus on DS back then, one was called Retrocalypse and he was like a DS guru. Unfortunately one day his channel was gone. Turns out he lost his collection in a flood, but I later found out he was an owner of like an actual gaming store or something to that effect. He never came back to YT as far as I know.

There were a bunch of small channels like that I doubt anyone here recalls, like Benzo8686, BallinNick1982, MovieStarKitten, TVandLust, and others, just a lot of early vloggers, who mostly pointed a camera at themselves in their bedrooms and talked about what they picked up or what games they've been playing, or childhood memories or stories involving games. Many of their channels are now dormant, or gone entirely.

I never got really big into scripted content back in the old days. But later on I did watch stuff like Game Chasers, Scott the Woz, Gaming Historian, Lady Decade, Sega LordX, My Retro Life, SNES Drunk, My Life In Gaming, etc. But to be honest, I still really just enjoy a good vlog. PeteDorr is back doing regular uploads again which I've been catching regularly, and there's several other good ones going today that I like to watch, such as DatGameCollector, LegallyInsaneGamer, RNG Gamer, Heck'n Steve, Steve Craig Retro Games, etc. There's something that never gets old about that simple format of content with folks just holding up stuff in front of the camera, and talking. Especially when they take the time to interact with their viewers, and listen to subscriber feedback. I enjoy the sense of community/comradery, that comes with following a small-time vlog. Rather than feeling like just another viewer out of thousands who are watching a show, where the producers don't really care what any rando thinks and don't interact with any of their audience.

I was a huge RetrowareTV fan back in the day. I found a lot of my favorite YouTubers there.
I still watch The GameChasers.
Way back when I had the chance to meet several of those guys. Hung out and even got to be friendly with some of them. Had a bunch of them on our podcast, Our Parents Basement.

I stuck my toe in that old youtube world. Never had much success, but I had a blast doing it. Made some pretty good friends that I still talk to.

I miss that old YouTube. It was a cool, Wild west feel. Everyone was still learning about retro games. Now, there’s tons of experts. A lot of guys have legit production now. I liked the raw feel better (that’s what she said)
