XBOX Disc-to-Digital Program unveiled.
« on: August 26, 2026, 03:17:14 pm »
Today at Gamescom, Microsoft unveiled their rumored disc-to-digital program for XBOX One and XBOX Series X games. Basically, you insert the disc and it redeems an entitlement to a digital copy on your account, allowing you to download and play a digital copy without needing to insert the disc again. Your disc will still function normally afterward.

Sounds great until you realize they wouldn't be doing this unless they were planning to go all digital next gen. Still, Microsoft's policy is slightly less crappy than Sony's now. It's noteworthy that not all XBOX One or Series X discs will work at launch. Microsoft has only said that "thousands" will work at the program's launch, and they'll continue to add more over time. Sadly, it's speculated that XBOX and XBOX 360 discs are unlikely to work with the program because they don't have the same identifier codes on the discs as the later consoles do.
Games Needed to Complete Collection:
PS5: 25 | PS4: 24 | XBOX One: 9 | Switch: 9

I don't think it means they'll go next gen digital only, if anything, this should be them choosing to go physical, because it'll give them a way to turn things around on Sony next time, much like Sony did to them back with the Xbox One reveal.  The disc to digital option is definitely a nice option to have, a disc being both a physical release and digital key so if something happens to the disc, you are all good, or really, you can have a version to share with friends while you still keep a version of it, so that's a big bonus for multiplayer games in terms of sharing, or really one could then sell their game and still have a copy of it.

All digital was always going to happen, I know there is a lot of push back against Sony, and for good reason, but I think the way they went about it is what is causing so much friction, and it's built upon a lot of other issues going on lately with Sony.  Physical does have its limitations, especially nowadays with how massive games can be, and really, a lot of physical games are basically digital as it is with Day 1 updates or the game just not all being on the disc, but companies have to show that they are willing to make things better for the transition.  PC gaming went all digital, but you can buy games from numerous different platforms, and the one main platform, Steam, is one of the best around.  Sony doesn't have that with PSN, and I don't think Microsoft is much better, but they have Game Pass, which gives people access to a lot of games for a decent price.

This seems more like Microsoft easing consumers into switching to all-digital than a get-back on Sony. I think this is bad news for physical gamers.

it's also xbox which pretty much had destroyed their physical market in the last decade.

them putting a small bandage on the damage done ain't saying much.

Not to toot my own horn or anything....  ;D

Idea for digital/physical combo games using proximity chips. Best of both worlds https://share.google/B4r803C7m8JpfQFav

Xbox, you're 7 years late lol.

With that said even back then I seen the clear logistical flaw in this which is why I suggested "proximity chips"

This will either function in 1 of 2 ways

1. This service will be limited to one use per disc, meaning once a digital key is claimed of a game it can't be claimed on another system.  Which is massively confusing for pre owned collectors, brutally demonstrative for anyone who lets friends borrow games, and ultimately a pain in the wholesale ass because ultimately people will have a secondary layer to game value. Weather or not its "digital copy" has been claimed.

Or

2. It can be used infinitely on any console which would mean I could go over my brothers house who owns 227 Xbox One games. Sit on the floor for a few days with him and download a digital library worth thousands of dollars for free because using his discs ultimately is like free piracy. Without ever needing to insert the disc again. Which is for lack if better words. Not happening.  And would immediately sink Microsoft as a company or at minimum cost them millions.

Option 1 is useless to me.  I havent yet got lazy enough to press eject on a disc drive and then insert a circular data Frisbee into my console. To me this isn't the big happy parade it seems. I just dont get it.  In what way can they do this without massive digital library hoarding among collectors?

Neither. Basically, almost every physical Xbox One/Series disc has a unique identifier. When you put a disc in, you'll get a digital license linked to that ID. You then can keep and use that license up to the point that that disc is placed into another console. Once a 2nd console registers the ID, the 1st console loses the license and can no longer play the digital version until another copy of the game is placed into the disc drive.

So, you could copy your brother's collection onto your console, but it would only last as long as until he wanted to play the games himself.
