Yeah PS2 and SNES are my 2 favorites to collect for... although I'm starting to really love the PS1. It's a system I never had growing up but it feels so much like a spiritual successor to the SNES even more so than its actual successor in the N64. And my PS2 collection is *mostly*(probably around 90%) CIB. I did go out to a Gamestop when they were getting rid of their PS2 supply and picked up like 15 disc only games on clearance. So far I think I've only gotten the box/manual for 1 of them since lol.

What do you love about collecting for the SNES? :) I really want to like collecting SNES games, but the fact that
A) There seems to be few SNES games in the wild where I live, and
B) Prices for these games are absolutely outrageous,

make it that I currently don't have any fun collecting anything SNES :( I want to give it some love, damn it!

Yeah, my wallet doesn't necessarily love collecting for it, and I've kind of hit a snag in collecting for it right now. But it was my first console and I just love it so much that when I do happen to find a good deal or even just when a game I've been wanting comes across for a reasonable amount it just makes my day :D ... I mean if I think about the fact that I spent a combined 500 dollars for 3 games on that system it kinda brings me down, but that's the benefit of being single :P

I guess the best advice I could give someone would be to pull out the tabs on your SNES (or get a clone console that can play imports) and you can usually find the Japanese versions of the games for much much less. Only thing that sucks is that you can't really do that for RPGs unless you can read japanese, which I can't lol.

I don't want to speak for Bwigdahl here, but the points you raise are super valid right now. If he's anything like me though, the caliber of games you get on the SNES are just fantastic. I really think of it as a golden era for RPGs on that system. You could argue that's the PS1's claim to fame, but I think the sprite based RPGs hold up better visually and really pushed the genre at the time.

It does suck it's so expensive to collect for though. I have the same problem as you in my area. It appears everyone around here grew up with Sega.

Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, FF III (and II for that matter), Illusion of Gaia, Breath of Fire, Mario RPG... All of those are fantastic, and there are more out there that I've never even played (Lufia, Soul Blazer to name a couple). And then obviously games like Metroid and Zelda, and then platformers like DKC and Super Mario World and fighters/brawlers... I could really go on, just some of my favorite games are on that system. And especially when compared to the other consoles at the time, the music/sound just blows everything out of the water... especially the tinny sounding Genesis.

While the SNES is a fantastic system with a great library, IMO no console holds a candle to the PS2 when it comes to RPGs.  The list of top-notch RPGs on that system is staggering.

This is true as well! I haven't had a chance to really delve into the JRPs too much, but I do love the Shin Megami Tensei series, the Xenosaga games, and  more that I can't remember right now. The anime based games still look fantastic.

*edit: Hell, how did I forget about the Suikoden games? They're only my favorite. Admittedly, the best two are on the PS1 =P

Man, just the sheer number of games in general on that console are staggering... It has basically double the library of the SNES. PS2 is my #2 favorite console to collect for... and I must say it's a whole lot easier to find games complete for a decent price for it than the SNES.

Edit: shit, I was way off lmao. for some reason I thought ps2 only had around 1400 games not 3800  :o

So karyann, after hearing your lamenting about the SNES I just went to your collection and see that you have freaking Demon's Crest the game that's like #1 on my wishlist and expensive as hell :P

It's funny that he did this because he decided to make a "thing" out of all the games he still had sealed. :P Some interesting logic right there. Have a bunch of games still sealed on your shelf? Why not collect an entire library of sealed games?

The SNES had some very innovative RPGs, which tends to stick out in a lot of people's memories, but it didn't have a ton of them.

I'd still say that PS1 had more quality RPGs than PS2, though. At least if we're limiting it to just JRPGs.

I agree with all of your points! I love the system and can't wait to discover more games (it's the only Nintendo system I've never owned while it was the "current generation") :) I'm just mostly sad about the prices haha.

So karyann, after hearing your lamenting about the SNES I just went to your collection and see that you have freaking Demon's Crest the game that's like #1 on my wishlist and expensive as hell :P

Haha, that's honestly my best find ever. Snagged it for $5 from a reseller who didn't specialise in anything (sold games, electronics, clothes, even furniture). He sold every SNES game he found for $5 a piece back then. Also got my system thanks to this guy! Now he started collecting too though, and he specialized his "shop" in video games, so I rarely ever get a good deal anymore  :-\

Even though I'm pretty big on getting the actual carts when I can, I will say that the Wii and Wii U virtual consoles are also a nice alternative. At least for the really expensive games.

And that's an awesome steal you got there.  ;D

Indeed. I probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to own Super Mario RPG, SNES Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Manna, otherwise.
