Revenge of the Sith review.

While I still regard Empire Strikes Back as the better one, I fully agree that Revenge of the Sith is incredible. Every single time it's aired on TV I have to watch it no matter what. Even though his downfall is predestined given we've seen the original trilogy, is heartbreaking seeing Anakin's descent into the dark side. The scene where he raids the Jedi Temple and comes across children and all he does is turn his lightsaber on after that one kid approaches him seeking his guidance is terribly good, more so seeing the kid's reaction as the lightsaber unsheathes. That's when it truly happened, then and there that's when Anakin was truly christened as Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith.

It's crazy to think that for that particular scene we could've seen Anakin actually killing those younglings had the studio not intervened and ask to tone it down.

I spent my halloween at the movies.  I watched Joker and Zombie Land Double Tap :)

JOKER

Joker was absolutely incredible, deep, dark, intelectual and deserves an oscar.  It really walked the line of the dark undertone of modern day society.  But without pandering or pulling an SJW card.  It got you thinking in all the right ways.   And Pheonix was an impeccable Joker.   Dark,  depressed,  masking it all in a dancing silly routine of insanity and laughter.

It was a great movie.  A purists Joker flick.  Not for the action lover.  For someone who actually wants a deeper look into Joker.

Zombieland Double Tap

It's actually pretty crazy how much time passed since the first one.  Zombieland I never thought would actually get a sequel.  It was such a cult icon.  It seemed unlikely.  But here it is :D.  In all it's glory.   And how little Emma Stone, Eisenburg and Harrleson aged.   It just feel like it happened right after the other. They literally almost look exactly the same. It's pretty impressive.  Abigail Breslin is a different story.   ;)

Zombieland was everything the fans would want i'd say.   It was funny, and sweet.  Had it's action when it needed it.  And all and all did a good job playing successor to a very beloved movie.   I wouldn't say it's quite as good.  But it's a really good movie.

The movie has balls and that is one thing I love about it. Even with toning it down it, dead jedi children are still shown and it is obviously implied that Anakin killed all those kids in the council room. I don't have a child murder fetish, but for the sake of portraying how far he had fallen it was an excellent demonstration. God, I freakin love this movie!

Revenge of the Sith is the only one of the three prequels I'll go back to watch now.  It's actually fairly good and holds up way better than the first two, which I'm basically done ever watching again as they keep getting worse every time I watch them.

As for me, getting around to The Last Jedi, the last of my watch of the modern films.  I haven't seen this since the theater myself, but at the time I wasn't as bothered by it as others.  Not that I thought it was great, I just didn't have as many issues with the movie as others did, though I still did have problems, so I'm curious to see what my view of the movie is after these two years and everything that has come since.

Watching the movie, I still only have two major issues with the movie.  The whole Finn/Rose plotline of them going to the casino city, getting a smuggler, just to then cause the death of numerous Resistance fighters due to picking a scumbag, isn't good.  Its just a waste of time in the end.  The same could basically be said for the stuff with Po, Leia, and Holdo.  I understand that's it meant for Po to learn that he can't just be a reckless idiot, but they also could've explained what they were doing to him at any point and that could've saved the lives of the Resistance fighters killed due to the actions Finn and Rose took.  It's a situation where people needed to just talk to each other.  It's basically two of the 4 plotlines being faulty.  Not that they were specifically executed poorly, but they don't work for the overall film.

That said, I like the rest of the movie.  The interactions with Rey and Luke, Rey and Kylo, Kylo taking out Snoke, and the entire finale starting from the destruction of Snope's ship.  I still love the visual of Holdo jumping to lightspeed through the First Order fleet.

Yes, this is not a particular good movie, it has problems, but it is not the worst one to me still, even with the issues it has.  That honor will always go to the first two prequel movies as I continue to hate them more with every watch.

Finally re-watched them all and I'm pretty excited to see what they are going to do with Rise of Skywalker.  Not because of any expectations I have for what is coming, because I just want to see what story they will tell, especially after the backlash they got.  How full tilt are they going to try and undo what they did with TLJ, or how they might spin it in another direction? I don't know, but I'm curious to see where they'll take it.  The only thing I have thought about ahead of time with the last movie is what the title means, and I sorta feel like it's going to end up being kind of a "I am Spartacus" sort of deal, a rallying cry basically.  Makes sense with the ending and Luke talking about legends.

Hot Take: I like all of the Disney Star Wars films.

TFA and Solo are both fun, if somewhat safe adventure films.

TLJ and R1 are both bold films that take some exciting risks, even if they have their flaws.

Each of them is better, in some manner than the prequels.

You were justified until that last sentence. The only Disney Wars movie that can stand with any of the pre-Disney films is Rogue One. The rest are a complete mess. I'm not saying the prequels are perfect, but they are objectively better films than TFA, TLJ and Solo.

For whatever reason, I had this notion that I wasn't going to like Rogue One, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it. It certainly was one of those moments where I appreciate being proven wrong.

I'll take any other Star Wars movie over the first two prequels, but I've already had this discussion before, so I won't go any deeper than that lol

The only thing that even justifies their existence is that they gave life to much better media, such as Phantom Menance gave us the Episode 1 Racer game on N64 and the Clone Wars gave us the awesome Clone Wars cartoon by Genndy Tartakovsky.  I guess the other CG Clone Wars cartoon counts too, I just never got into it.

More than anything else its the acting.  There's not a single performance in any of the Disney films that is as bad, or as distracting, as Hayden and Jake Lloyd - and this has a pretty adverse affect on the characterization.  You get the occasional high point - Ewan in Episode II and III, McDiarmid in III - but it affects the way you feel about the characters and the overall arcs.  I mean, I like the prequels too, to a certain extent, but I and II are not good, and rarely even fun, even if they do have their high points.

Hit the nail on the head there for me.  I think The Last Jedi is definitely way more problematic in terms of execution than the first two films, with them being way better constructed and more cohesive, but those movies just drag hard.  Attack of the Clones has a few moments that are alright (I still hate that all the Clones are CG in those movies), but I'm down to literally one thing in Phantom Menace I like, which is Pod Racing.  Even the Darth Maul fight has gone sour for me when I came to fully realize how stupid Darth Maul's death is.  I'll take a useless Finn and Rose adventure over anything that involves Jar Jar lol

True that. Jedi Power Battles is quite good.

Terminator: Dark Fate.  Easily the best film in the franchise since T2, although that is not a particularly difficult bar to climb.  There are some good ideas in here that are stifled by “ok” execution.  Action is uniformly good to great, with some occasional rubber man CGI that is distracting.  Good performances all around, with the woman playing Dani being the one weak spot.

3.5/5

And if anyone here has Letterboxd you can follow me at Cartagia.

Finally settled in to watch the Ghostbusters remake.  It’s not very good.  There’s basically no script and every joke that actually lands is followed by 30 seconds of inane ad lib riffing.  A couple of decent characters does not make a good movie make.

I felt like that was the greatest problem with the movie also, anytime I did chuckle, it was because it was just some small little joke that happened and they moved on, but everything else they'd just dragged itself into the freaking dirt.  Made me want to leave the movie like halfway through even though I saw the movie for free lol

Did a little bit of a Disney+ dive during recuperation, mostly titles that the GF hadn’t seen, and 1 I hadn’t:

Frozen
The Princess and the Frog
Lilo and Stitch
Muppet Treasure Island
Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Then tonight I got around to something I’d been wanting to watch for a while

Shin Godzilla

I *loved* it.
