Adding multiple language versions? (SNES, NES, ...)
« on: July 20, 2014, 10:16:43 am »
Hello everybody

I just found this site and it's awesome. After adding some SNES games to my collection, I noticed something and I don't know if this database is the right way to keep track of my games - since the entries are recorded in such detail.

I'm living in Zürich, Switzerland, collecting mostly for the SNES. Most of the database entries are UK versions. But here in mid europe (and since switzerland has multiple language regions), we get all sorts of different language versions with different item numbers. Besides of the item numbers, these games are practically the same (but sometimes also differences in the box art/text and so on).

So my question is, should or shouldn't I add those versions to the database? Using the UK entries, while I own stuff from Germany, France, Italy or the Netherlands, is - well - sort of wrong ;) But adding all those different versions is maybe a bit too much.

Cheers!

You should add them, as they are different from UK versions.

Also such items, for example http://vgcollect.com/item/39020
I have an older version, but the only difference is the item number (SNSP-MH-FRG / -NOE (newer release))
Adding a new entry seems to be correct but also such an overkill  ;D

It's allowed. We document variants of all kinds. :)

Dont forget to put it in the title, or people will post them as double's.

Alright, I'll do that. Hm, lots of scanning to do... ;)

I do it like this http://vgcollect.com/item/54119. Posting the languages on the box. Only the English versions i dont do that, unless there's another version already in the database.

I've added a few foreign variants before that were in my collection.

Pokémon: Rote Edition - http://vgcollect.com/item/57881

Pokémon: Version Cristal - http://vgcollect.com/item/57880

Lernen mit Pokémon: Tasten-Abenteuer : http://vgcollect.com/item/57885

Pokémon: Silberne Edition: SoulSilver - http://vgcollect.com/item/57882

If I wasn't lazy I'd go through and add all of the different language variants of Pokémon games and not just the ones I own, but I don't have the patience for that.
My collection doesn't include my Steam or PSN games, just physical games.

Okay pordox, hold on. You're adding tons of dupes without saying what is different about them. o_O

I edited some of your entries - I added "(PAL Version)" due to their cover artwork. I also merged the older Super Return of the Jedi listing with your own since the old version had bad artwork and changed it to say (JVC) because there's a THQ version too.

Your Mortal Kombat entry - http://vgcollect.com/item/64351 - has exactly the same cover as the one we already have - http://vgcollect.com/item/16197 - so what's different?

And all items must have their artwork in the right spots - all those games that you added with a cart scan as the front cover will have to be edited. The cart goes in the cart area. :(

That's why I asked before I submit practically the same game with another version code. As you can see, the MK entry has a slightly different cover (white border around the picture) and the region code is different. Same with all the three SNES Super Star Wars games, my copies have different codes. I added the region codes in "[xxx]" to the titles, so that everybody can see it.

I really don't think that I've added duplicates  :-[ sry, I will stop submitting if this is going to far. I thought this will help completing the list.

Excuse me, I'll put more attention to that, won't happen again.

For the Star Wars Games, you can see the differences in the codes on the Cartridge-Pics I've uploaded - that are now gone  8)

Don't feel bad, you're doing this just fine - but you just have to be more careful. :) The only time we accept carts or discs as front cover is when the game was sold as cart only or it did not have a box (like the 156489486 versions of Super Mario / Duck Hunt)

Adding the codes to the game titles was a good idea.

That's the plan. As I said, from now on I will always take a second look at the pictures/spots ;)

Just to explain how I think about this when I submit one of the pal games. For example, here's this http://vgcollect.com/item/46206, and here is my submission http://vgcollect.com/item/64474
Seems to be exactly the same version. But since the first entry has no details about the region code, it's absolutely not clear what version that is. Four people have that game in their collection and for that I think I should not edit something. I really don't want to mess up the database or the collection of someone else. So I decided to create a new entry with more detailed informations.
If this procedure is approved by an admin I will submit a few more ;D

You added an FRG version, and a NOE version also exists. So again, you did the right thing.

If you've got the boxes, please mention the languages on the box in the Description field. Box variants also count. :)
