Favorite Childhood Films
« on: June 05, 2015, 03:19:07 am »
Been awhile since I watched the good 'ole Robin Hood from Disney and it got me thinking about what I consider to be my real favorites/classics of my childhood.  There's a lot I think are still good, enjoyable movies, but I really feel like it's truly just a handful of films that I can watch and just feel good, help kinda bring some peace of mind.

1. TMNT (1990)

2. The Princess Bride

3. Disney's Robin Hood

I know there's a couple more, but I'm spacing on what I would consider something truly classic for me. Like I went back to watch Secret of Nimh, which still has fantastic animation, it just doesn't hold up quite as well I felt.  I'll come back to it when I figure 'em out.

Toy Story could possible one for me too.  It's been a long time since I watched that.  Should go and see if it holds up enough for me. The Incredibles is my favorite Pixar film, but I was 18 when that came out, which isn't childhood material.

A "show your age" thread.  The Secret of Nimh, Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland all come to mind.

I don't know what constitutes "childhood" so I'll say up to age 16 which for me was 1985. My list begins with the Star Wars trilogy, the real one, not the one with the cartoon rabbit that steps in the poopy

Also going to list Raiders of the Lost Ark. I don't have a number one favorite movie of all time but I'd say that Raiders and Empire Strikes back are co-owners of my number one.

Also loved Close Encounters, ET,  Superman 1 and 2, Back to the Future, Karate Kid, Rocky 1-4, Gremlins, Conan the Barbarian, Goonies, Ghostbusters, Trading Places, Tron, Beverly Hills Cop, Revenge of the Nerds, Star Trek 2 and 3, Cocoon, The Last Starfighter, Jaws 1 and 2, Red Dawn, Police Academy, King Kong (1976), Smokey and the Bandit, probably several of the classic Disney movies that I saw when I was very young like Bambi, Cinderella, etc.

I had few restrictions on what I was able to watch when I was younger so there were many R-rated movies being rented from the local video store on the weekend. That's not to say I didn't watch my fair share of kids movies too. Here are the the movies that I watched and enjoyed the most growing up:

- Godzilla 1985
- Mortal Kombat
- Tremors 2
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
- Jurassic Park
- Aliens
- Predator
- Total Recall
- Aladdin
- Jason and the Argonauts

So many - in no particular order:

"When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed
if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I
became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the
desire to be very grown up.” ― C.S. Lewis

I loved tons of movies growing up!  My parents weren't super strict on what I watched, so some of this stuff you guys will be saying WTF?!?!  Here are some of them, no particular order and in no way complete....

Heavy Metal
The Goonies
E.T. the Extra Terrestrial
Star Wars (all three originals...the prequels are trash)
Indiana Jones (all three...the Crystal Skull came much later and was pretty meh)
Conan the Barbarian
The Terminator
Alien
The Secret of Nhym (sp?)
Batman (1989 Keaton & Nicholson flick)

Edit:  Ghostbusters!!!  How could I have forgotten that gem?!

Everything you said is spot-on for me as well.  Conan the Barbarian was one of my all-time favorites and I still pop the DVD in to this very day occasionally.  "Between the times when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the son's of Arius...there was an age undreamed of."  From that opening on, CtB rocked!

Revenge of the Nerds (first one, others sucked) was pretty much perfect.  From the very beginning of the movie, I LMAO.  I love where everyone is honking and passing Louis' dad on the highway.  His dad says "Got the cruise control set on 35!"  ROFL!

Other classics I love include Cannonball Run, Porkies and Loaded Weapon.
