This should be one listing. If you must then include the reversible cover in the disc art or other image area.

I agree, things like NBA 2k16, ICO/SotC HD, or BioShock Infinite on PS3 had reversible covers, but it's still one release.

The implication is that you can get this item factory sealed with one cover vs the other? If so, it should be separate items.

The publishers randomly flip the cover art before it's sent out. So yes, you could get the game sealed with either or; I just think it may be more appropriate for the description field than making a separate item. Or you can state in your notes which variant you got.

When I think of cover art variations, I think they should be separate if you can't physically have both at the same time. Like the Working Designs variants on PS1. Or the screw cart variants on NES. You have to physically buy the variants separately to own each one.

With this release, because you could change this game into either item at will, you're really adding two games to your collection when you're only physically adding one, because you own both variants by default, every time. That kind of fluidity makes me more inclined to make it one item from the start. What it looks like when it's sealed isn't relevant in my opinion.

You have it backwards! If you were to buy a sealed NES game, you have no idea if you have 5 or 3 screw version unless it has been determined how to tell just from the box. So in that case, it could be impossible to know if you had both a 5 and 3 screw version sealed.

But in this case, we can easily tell from looking at it which version a person has. A person may want to have both versions sealed, so there should be two entries.

We aren't talking about the fact you can change it yourself after you unseal the game. We are talking about how it arrives from the factory. If a brand new game can have the cover in one of two ways, then we have two entries. This only covers sealed items and not used or resealed items. If a person buys the game opened, then they get to determine which they have or which to put in their collection. People collect sealed items so if it is important to them, then it is important to us.

The point I’m trying to make is that these two NES variants are mutually exclusive always. It's not dependent on the condition of the game, if it's sealed or opened. Even though the box may be the same, there are fundamental differences between both versions and you can’t change from one to the other at will. You can't have both a 5 and a 3 screw in the same box, it's just not possible no matter what.

For Shantae, from a materialistic perspective it's the exact same game, with the same release time and artwork across the board, it only depends on which cover got used when the game was sealed. It’s only a mutually exclusive release if it’s sealed; once you open it, you have both, every single time. If theoretically everyone opened their copy of this game, this second entry would become completely pointless and obsolete. I think that's an valid indicator that this really isn't the best way to do it.

I think we can all agree that other games with reversible covers don’t get two entries in the database precisely because they’re the same game. Therefore, I don’t think that because this one happens to be sealed when it’s put on the shelf, it makes a good enough argument for two entries, that’s all. But I do understand that this is a special example and should at least be discussed, I won't discredit that call. :)

And I personally think the notes section is a perfectly adequate method for a collector to indicate that they have more than one sealed copy with each artwork, I'm interested in hearing why that wouldn't be appropriate. Sealed collectors are already regulated to using the notes section by default on this site.

Going by your point above, one could also make an argument that we would then need a third entry in the database for every 3/5 cart NES game, with no variant attached to it at all, for people who have bought a sealed copy but have no idea what they have inside! I think that's a little silly, haha. I don't think this database has ever really catered to sealed collectors.

If LRG is in fact flipping the art randomly so that some people see one cover and some see another cover, it doesn't matter, you're receiving the same item.  There are not specific print numbers with the different covers, they are all reversible, and every copy has both covers.

The cover art for this particular item should display both sides of the cover art.  It is not alternate art, because they both have the same reversible artwork, it's just flipped one way or the other.

My argument has always been to have every possible item in a game to be its own entry in the database, however the site is not set up to do it that way right now. I hope we can get to that point some day, it will be fun building the logic for it. :D

For this game, the publisher has made it so they are selling the same exact thing packaged in two different ways.IF this is indeed the case. I personally do not know but it has been reported as such. This means there are two different releases of the same thing. The publisher is the one who has done this, not vgcollect. It is their fault we must track this as a variation.  :P

It doesn't hurt to have both versions in the database, as long as it is documented properly.

This ruling would not mean that all games with reversible covers are allowed multiple entries. Only games that were originally sold that way at retail, factory sealed, are allowed such entries.

I don't know which of the two is best to keep. I vote for the one with the actual game titles listed. Easier to find in the search engine.
