Author Topic: What do you think was the most competitive Generation of gaming?  (Read 2429 times)

Out of all the generations of gaming, which do you think was the most competitive and intensely populated the most memorable classics that were in direct competition with one another causing a lucrative and fun community? :)

For me it was the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii (DS, PSP)  generation.   :D

The madness was so amazing back than and PS3 and 360 and Wii in terms of sales and quality were so highly contested for different titles and really duked it out for a while there.  Somehow Wii won in sales but consensus say PS3 and 360 were the two powerhouses of the gen.  Xbox vs PS2 was a clear win for PS2 in most eyes but last gen was truly two heavyweights leaving it all in the ring.  Both put so much effort and so much depth to their library. But with games like Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Punchout Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Kirby's epic yarn  and than all the countless PS3 first party classics, RPG depth,  PS2 remakes.  Bioshock came out this gen.   All 3 of them.  Gears of war came out this gen.    Halo came with 3-4 strong titles as did god of war.  Forza and Gran Turismo contesting one another.     And it was just so amazing to be alive and witness it.  The gen lasted a good 10 years as well.  :).

Than with handhelds PSP vs DS and Later DI and Ds Lite  was truly incredible.  Although it was early in the gen and later on Vita and 3DS happened.  I like to say PSP vs DS is still the handeheld debate of the gen.  And that was every bit as competitive.  PSP was amazing and DS was innovative and iconic.     Truly hard to pick winners in this gen.  and that's why I think it was so good :)

4th gen. Super Nintendo vs Sega Genesis. The Genesis came along early and made a mockery of the NES in terms of capabilities. Then Super Nintendo came and the war was on. Two significant chunks of the market share were split between two purely gaming based companies - Nintendo and Sega.

7th gen, IMO wasn't as competitive because by then Nintendo were off in their own little bubble. Microsoft was out of the gate early with the next gen experience while PS3 was late, and pretty gimped. I'd say third party software is what made the 7th gen competitive, just a deluge of games in all genres.

The competition of Genesis vs. Super Nintendo was real.

It got even more intense with the N64 vs. PlayStation. As a PlayStation fan, I would defend my grey console to the death.

At the moment online games are the most competitive. I like that they do not take up too much space in the memory of the computer. I always wondered how much quality the online game was made and how well it can work in the browser and what problems can happen in doing so. Recently found an online casino, you can read an http://casinoglobal.info/casinos/descr-casino-x-post-281/. I played it and made good conclusions. The quality is excellent, there are no problems and I will continue to play it.

Sixth gen by far. So many amazing franchises came into being during this time and we had four really good consoles with great exclusives duking it out. I know a lot of people with say the 4th generation due to the classic console wars, but it really takes second place to gen 6.

1980s arcade games. The reason why Twin Galaxies came into being.

non-online 4th gen ( early-mid 90s), online is probably going to be this generation

In addition, 80s-90s arcade stuff has always been very competitive if you look up score histories, but unfortunately Twin Galaxies only capitalized on the early 80s ones (and are now a huge joke of a website) , so most of the more interesting competition was left for Japanese scoreplayers. There a lot of wr strats for games of that period that are still completely unknown to the west and left up to the user to find for themselves.

Probably last generation, the 7th. Though the current 8th is surpassing that I feel.

Thank you tripredacus, if you guys haven't you need to watch A Fistfull of Kong and The Video Game Years.  Don't forget that video games were, I think, bigger before the crash of the early 80s.  I would also add that if you've never had to lug one hundred pounds of PC equipment over to a friends house for a Quake LAN party with grappling hook mods then....then...go buy a hundred pound PC.  And watch beastmaster too.  Just cause.
