ATARI VCS 2600 - Errors in entries / General question
« on: January 08, 2018, 01:53:46 pm »
Hi,

Errors

Basketball (Picture Label)
https://vgcollect.com/item/10725
Year:1981 is wrong. There is no 1981 picture label release of basketball. The first picture label for this game was released 1978. This is why 1978 is written on the label and on the box.

Atlantis (Text Label)
https://vgcollect.com/item/107731
Genre: Arcade. "Shoot'em up" would be correct, as the main target of the game is to shoot as many possible enemy ships. This is the definition of Shoot'em up...

Carnival (Color Label)
https://vgcollect.com/item/96504
This label is wrong. It is a U.K. release by Ideal Toy (Australia and U.K.). The main PAL color label version is packaged by CBS Toys. Either rename to U.K. Color Label or replace the label.

Carnival
https://vgcollect.com/item/96505
This is also a U.K. targeted white label. There were no international white labels for PAL except U.K.

Chopper Command
https://vgcollect.com/item/136047
The label is showing an NTSC NA release. AX-015 is an american release. EAX-015 is the correct one. It also states "International Edition". There is only Chopper Command International Edition as EU PAL release. I uploaded the correct pictures and corrected the item number and the name but it was rejected.

Coconuts (Handle Label)
https://vgcollect.com/item/32232
The game is called "Coco Nuts" not "Coconuts". The monkey is called Coco and he is nuts. Thats the joke. Just check the manual, the box or anything. It's written with a space.

Coconuts
https://vgcollect.com/item/15130
Same here, the game is called "Coco Nuts" not "Coconuts"

Ghostbusters
https://vgcollect.com/item/65505
There never was an Atari branded release, this is Fan Art. EAZ-108 is the black label release by Activision. I uploaded the correct cover and label but it got rejected.

Galaxian
https://vgcollect.com/item/70090
The 1983 release is the silver label release. The inital box and the label featured a fancy font (like other silver releases had unique fonts). So either this is the Gray Label from 1985/6/7 or it is the 1983 then the cover is wrong. Atari used the Atari Font for most gray label releases (Like in the label in this entry)

Freeway
https://vgcollect.com/item/66475
The labels and box are wrong. They are from the US NTSC release (The serial is  on the label AG-009). The EU PAL release was (again) the "International Edition". There is no EU release without "International Edition"

Jr. Pac-Man
https://vgcollect.com/item/95130
The cartridge and box back label were missing. I uploaded the scans from my NIB PAL release but they were rejected?  Action not allowed? My Box picture also features the "P" sticker which is missing on the current picture

Kung-Fu Master
https://vgcollect.com/item/116320
The labels show the SALU release. (The Activition labels always go over the edge). This is why I recommended to rename into "Kung-Fu Master (Salu)"

Kung-Fu Master (White Label)
https://vgcollect.com/item/63410
Wrong label (Salu release again). The White Label release featured a Activision cartridge (not this salu crap) with a white label that goes over the edge.
Wrong Item number. AG-039 is the NTSC NA release. EAX-039-04I is the correct one.

Fishing Derby - International Edition
https://vgcollect.com/item/16025
The Item Number and the region shows that this is NOT an International Edition (The labels are the correct IE versions). This looks like an duplicate of https://vgcollect.com/item/29929

Fishing Derby
https://vgcollect.com/item/66477
The box back label and the cartridge label are wrong. They are from the NTSC NA release.

General Activision EU question

e.g. Activision made the EU releases all as "International Edition". So the game is then called GAME with subtitle Internation Edition.
IMHO the name of the Game should stay and the International Edition should be moved in the AKA field: "GAME: International Edition"
Currently, games appear with international edition in the title or in the alt-name

Hyphens in game titles
As I understood, hyphens should not be used but colons. Just looked for an example https://vgcollect.com/item/39029 "Batman - Return of the Joker".
Wouldn't be "Batman: Return of the Joker" the correct title? Can I request a change of titles when I find one?

Thanks,

Andre

I have that Pac-Man CIB and the back cover is different than that one you try to put in. Just make a new entry for German edition.

You can edit it to the correct form.
Like I did ;)

As noted, matching up boxes to carts is not always easy. And considering these games do not have region locking (see also Game Gear and SMS) there has ended up many games from EU in NA and vice versa. People tend to then believe if they found a game in their home country that it was released there and years of this type of misinformation leads to websites and game lists having the wrong info on them.

Items in wrong category need to be merged as dupes, not changed to a different item. This is done to maintain collections.

Any edits can be made to genre or year released, there is not a need to mention these types of things as a listing error.

Carnival
Color label UK is in the db already, so the rename cannot happen because it would create a naming issue. That one is the 4L1717 color label cart that specifically refers to PAL UK TV:
https://vgcollect.com/item/96506

Then the one pointed out as being UK color label 4L2277:
https://vgcollect.com/item/96504
And the white label version also 4L2277:
https://vgcollect.com/item/96505

So if both the 4L2277 are UK releases, what is the 4L1717 then?
Or are you saying that the 96506 entry has a box/cart mismatch?

Chopper Command
https://vgcollect.com/item/9186 NA
https://vgcollect.com/item/136047 duplicate in EU section

Coconuts
Box front title is item title, cart or game menu screen title into alt-title.
This item shows box and cart (front) title as Coconuts, and title on back to be Coco Nuts.

Ghostbusters
https://vgcollect.com/item/65505
front art removed.

Galaxian
https://vgcollect.com/item/70090
Entry created with front art. adjust the title to match the art on entry.

Freeway
Item in EU category: https://vgcollect.com/item/66475
Item number added after entry created. Is this a US game in an EU category?
Is it a duplicate of this? https://vgcollect.com/item/15273
Additionally, the two US Freeway entries have the same front art. This is blue label entry:
https://vgcollect.com/item/35121
Where does the front art on 66475 come from?

Jr Pac-Man
https://vgcollect.com/item/95130
Front art change was rejected due to 2 reasons.
1. the P on the box but nothing about this P in Description field.
2. Edit made to description field didn't remove the text that is currently in it.
Is the art currently on the entry the US art?

Kung-Fu Master
descriptors in item titles should be more obvious. I did not immediately see where it says "Salu" on box front, back or cart label.
Also this item may be a dupe.
reported item: https://vgcollect.com/item/116320
white label: https://vgcollect.com/item/63410

Fishing Derby - International Version
Item number removed.
Moved to EU category.
Merged duplicate.

Editions
Style Guide requires name to be as

refering to editions. Mastafalik pls. :p

I do agree tho, that rule is specifically about "special" editions, but the way it is written we apply it to anything with the word Edition in the title. It is easier that way to make it a blanket rule than to try to determine what is and what isn't special.

Can you please check which year and production location you have? I have the 1987 Made in Hong Kong release.  Funny, there is no german edition :P

thanks for all the help :)

Ah my favorite CBS releases. :D CBS PAL releases are distributed by either Ideal Toy Company or CBS Toys.  Ideal toys are all U.K. releases (Made in England), while one are targeted to the requlatory requirement for U.K. (for U.K. PAL System only), others are targeted for other english speaking markets. Have you heard about Ireland? Do you think they would put a UK only cart in their device :D Australia, new zealand and so on,  you name it. The CBS Toys releases are the EUROPE releases, aka the guys who don't live on an island.  So if you ask me, only the 4L2277 with CBS Toys as manufacture is the "real" international edition (for ALL languages)

Coconuts
Box front title is item title, cart or game menu screen title into alt-title.
This item shows box and cart (front) title as Coconuts, and title on back to be Coco Nuts.
Oh, ok. Then it makes sense. If everywhere else, the manual the box, backside of the box,and even the Trademark is called "Coco Nuts" and the story about coco the little monkey who went nuts, the game must be called Coconuts. I'll start to discuss about Sprintmaster/Sprint Master if you dont believe me :P

Ghostbusters

The EU releases only have a different production and release date, the box is the US box only with a sticker added. The latest 1988 box has the P branding on the cartridge.

reported item: https://vgcollect.com/item/116320
white label: https://vgcollect.com/item/63410

Whitelabel releases of Activision games always have the similar label style as the original and are top label and front label in one. The SALU releases only have a front label on the cart with no top label (The carts often have a "roof" like a house so there is no space for a label.) Also there is visible black space below the front label. If the white label does not go down to the border and around it, its a salu release. They not always have the "distributed by SALU" on the labels, too, to make it more complicated

96506 with 4L1717 referring to UK PAL TV is [UK]
96504 and 96505 with 4L2277 are english [EU], no TLD is required for these items.

Kung-Fu Master
We can make 116320 be named Kung-Fu Master (Also for 7800) and then each entry would need info added to description regarding the cart labels.
