What game do you have the most copies of, and why?
« on: April 20, 2019, 08:59:38 am »
I imagine the answer to the question for most people will be Super Mario Bros..  It's cheap, common, easy to get all on top of being a great game.

After looking into it I'm pretty sure my answer is Mega Man 2 .  I own it across five platforms, usually as part of some larger collection.

NES - Original Cart
NES Classic
Mega Man Anniversary Collection - GCN
Mega Man Legacy Collection - 3DS
Mega Man Legacy Collection - PS4
Mega Man Legacy Collection - PS4 Digital (this one was part of a Humble Bundle)

So that's 6 copies of this game.  Super Mario Bros. is number two, with at least 4 copies floating around here.

I really try to avoid a lot of repeats in my collection- but I can think of 3 games I own four times over:

Lunar: the Silver Star on Sega CD, PS1, GBA, & PSP
Final Fantasy on NES, PS1, GBA, & PSP
Burgertime on 2600, 7800, Intellivision & Colecovision

Lunar I don't think really counts, as there's notable version differences between each release. Final Fantasy stems from an early desire to own every Final Fantasy release, but that's since tapered off (and in fact, I've considered getting rid of a couple of those versions). Burgertime, however, is an intentional act based on an accidental one. My Intellivision is actually my fiancé's family's old machine, and he's told me in the past that Burgertime was a family favorite. When they found the machine, they didn't find all the games. I was out with a friend later on & found Burgertime in a retro shop, and bought it- thought it would be a good nostalgia trip for him. I discovered when I got home that, being distracted by said friend while shopping, I'd actually bought the 2600 release of the game... and that I already had it on the Intellivision anyway. So I thought "screw it, let's keep this train wreck going" and proceeded to buy Burgertime on every pre NES system I could. A brief bit of research recently suggests that the only other standalone Burgertime releases are on NES & Gameboy... so I'll likely get those too. Just to be silly.

Resident Evil: PS1 original, PS1 Directors Cut, Gamecube remake, PS3 remake HD, PS4 remake HD, DS
Resident Evil 2: PS1, Dreamcast, Gamecube
Resident Evil Nemesis: PS1, Dreamcast, Gamecube
Shenmue: NTSC/US Dreamcast, NTSC/US Dreamcast Limited Edition, NTSC/J Dreamcast, PS4, XBONE
Shenmue 2: NTSC/J Dreamcast, PAL Dreamcast, XBOX, PS4, XBONE
Final Fantasy X: PS2, PS3, PS4

On a sidenote, I used to obsessively hoard copies of Shenmue and Shenmue 2 back in the day. I can't remember how many copies of each I had at one time, but if I had to guess, i had probably 8 or 9 copies of Shenmue on the DC and about 7 on the XBOX. I realized how ridiculous this was years ago however and sold/traded them all off except one copy of each version.

For me, it's Secret of Mana. I have four copies - SNES NTSC, SNES PAL (DE), Super Famicom, SNES Classic

My PAL version is my first copy from when I was a kid, even though I live in North America. It was a gift from family in Germany. Neither they nor I realized at the time that North American and European video games worked on different formats. I later picked up the NTSC version to actually play, and the Super Famicom variant was just for fun to round out the collection.

There are a few other games that I have 2 or 3 versions of, but SoM beats them out with 4.

Looking at my collection the most copies I have of any one game is only 2. And here they are!

Ace Combat 5
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy X
Donkey Kong Country
Pokemon Crystal
Star Fox
Super Mario World

Most of these are either my favorite games or from when I got my SNES classic which caused a lot of dupes.
Currently Playing:
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes (PS4), Gauntlet Dark Legacy (GC)

I'm thinking it's Final Fantasy IV, even though I'm still missing a couple of versions. I have it for DS, PSP, and GBA.

I'd probably say Brutal Legend.  I own it on 360 physical, I own it on Steam because I wanted to play it with some better loading and performance on PC.  I also got a free copy on Twitch through the free games they give away with Prime.

Only 2 were bought on purpose, but like I'd buy the game again if they remastered it or did something new for it, because I just love it.  It's a top 10 game of all time for me.

Sonic The Hedgehog series on 3 different compilation discs and 1 copy of Sonic on a Genesis clone console

1: Sega Genesis Collection (PS2)
2: Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection for PS3 & Xbox360

This reason was because my PS3 version of the Ultimate Collection has disc rot so I also purchased it on Xbox 360 after my PS3 version rotted.

As for PlayStation 2 it was cheap and I wanted to have it just because I could afford it. I love compilations and find them to be greater value then single versions of video games.

(LONG POST ABOUT HOW I FEEL)
But I disagree with anyone who buys any video game multiple only to claim it at their property and theirs alone. The  only games I ever really want to obtain are the video games that I don't already have. I know a lot of people do purchase something they already own on multiple times, and it really annoys me that a lot of people will get something they already have on purpose, because it can prevent other collectors who don't already have that game in their collection in the possible future. from getting it.

But I am also not a rich man so IF that game goes up in price guess who is not going to be affording or paying a high price for it?

But sometimes the video game with the same name on it is different on other platforms. Handhelds are sometimes a whole different game then on console or PC. and I can agree with having a different version of those particular video game. But I don't agree with people that buy the same exact video game both for the same console or (same version) because it can keep the game away from someone who does not have a copy at all.

It is a dog eat world out there so I know there will be people who buy just to buy or buy to sell at a higher price, I just don't see the point in buying the same version of games twice on purpose. Too much clutter also

The PS2 game was my only exception, because it was a compilation. I see value in those kind of games but I am not going to buy anymore because I got 1 copy of all of them already

As a series, I have The King of Fighters' games more than anything else. Checking my collection, I found out that, in total, I own 43 releases in the series in a variety of consoles.
And inside of it, the game that appears the most in my collection is The King of Fighters '97. I own seven of its physical releases for Neo Geo AES, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, PlayStation 2 s (as part of the Orochi-hen compilation disc), Neo Geo CD and I'm waiting for the arrival of the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 versions I recently bought from Limited Run Games.

I have fun collecting different versions for different consoles or cover variants of games I like, but I usually don't buy a second copy of a released item that I already own. The exception being floppies for the Famicom Disk System. You never know when those things will suddenly decide to stop working, so I buy duplicates for it anytime I find them for cheap (like the equivalent to US$1.00 or US$2.00).
So, the game I own the most copies of a single version of is The Legend of Zelda for the Famicom Disk System of which I own four copies.

Off the top of my head, Final Fantasy VII, not a big RPG fan but I kept finding it at thrift stores
Samurai Shodown 3, AES, Saturn, Collection on the ps2 and playstation… The playstation version is terrible, again found at a thrift store.
Not sure how many copies of Street fighter 2. Pretty sure everybody has at least a couple copies of Street fighter 2
