Is the NES going down in price?

browsing ebay and shop goodwill indicates to me that the overall trend is the NES (loose cart, loose console) is going down, and prices of DS are creeping upwards, and GBA continues to creep up while gameboy seems to be going down (except pokemon, naturally). this indicates to me personally that it's just the next wave of nostalgia, tho arguably we've been able to predict this with DS software for some time thanks to gamestop case gutting practises...

snes, n64 and gamecube especially continue to be very expensive with no end in sight, sometimes outrageously so (lol @ super mario world loose cart going for more than the cost of a quality paperweight).

i think most people who are nostalgic for NES and want to collect casually have already done so by now. CIB is an exception, but of course it is for ANY games packaged in cardboard boxes, they usually were tossed out or ended up ruined (bugs, moths, high humidity zones, unforeseen disasters, pets, etc...), but that wasn't necessarily what this thread was about so...

anyway i still find the price for NES consoles to be absolutely bonkers but it certainly seems to be plateaued as an overall trend.

edit: as a general disclaimer it's worth pointing out that i don't keep up with NES actively so this is very much watching from afar~

Lots of great commons. Marios, Castlevania, DuckTales, Bionic Commando, Batman, etc.

I was gonna say, who doesn't want the commons? Most of the good games are relatively common.


I look for most cart systems to fall, at least the non-rare. Many are realizing the appeal of an Everdrive. We got into this telling ourselves what we really wanted to was to play the games on actual hardware, nowdays that couldn't be easier or cheaper to do. These carts are quickly being reduced to shelf-porn now. Fewer are finding that to be worth the cost, by the day. I've wrestled with this idea a dozen times in the past year. What really is the point in all of this? Just something to look at on the wall? I suppose it does beat scrolling through a list of executable files, but for the price does it really? Quiet the conundrum.

I'm glad the NES prices are going down, but I don't really want more NES games at this point. I only like the sports games for the NES and Zelda, For some reason I find NES sports games to be a lot of fun, but I don't like the NES platformers as of today I find them too  challenging and frustrating

Yup! and as someone who is just getting back into NES collecting finding commons for cheap has been a godsend as of late! Just picked up 21 games for just over $100 recently. Nothing rare obviously but I'm happy with the Marios, Disney Capcoms, and other lesser appreciated games like Friday the 13th and Monster Party. I held off on buying for NES because of the price but everything else seems to be going up while NES is stagnating. So I'm happy about that! One thing to note though is while games seem to be going down (except rares) the consoles themselves seem to be going up a bit especially the top loaders. I had a top loader some 10 years ago and I hate that I sold it, I think I paid $75 for it back then. Now they're running $150-200. The front loaders seem to have gone up a little as well, though not as much.

I only use my "Hyperkin RetroN 2" today, since my original NES I bought, is hard to get working. I like the "Hyperkin RetroN 2" but mine only has AV cord hookups, But it  instantly plays both Super Nintendo and Original NES Nintendo games on it as well., and the "Hyperkin RetroN 2" let's you play. Using either an original or off brand, NES and SNES controller with use to all of it's games.

So far the only thing my"Hyperkin RetroN 2" can't play is Rad Racer II

As someone collecting for 34 years now, I have seen almost all of it. Commons pricing is stable or slightly decreasing only dependent on the title. Almost all CIB regardless of there scarcity are going up in price as they are all highly desired. There are collectors dropping their complete loose sets to get complete CIB sets. Same goes for sealed and sealed/graded but to an even higher degree. Many of those "collectors" are not just doing it to keep but also as investments. While they hurt the hunt for the little guy, they keep raising the prices now into the thousands for even common sealed & graded games. It truly is nuts to see what some of the prices are.

I picked up a couple NES games the other day for $15. Of course, those are the prices that my local store has always had. They priced all their stuff several years ago and they don't bother to update prices when they rise, so a lot of their NES games are sub $10.

VGPC says NES average has gone up to $31 this year. About half of the games are going for more than $10. That's still pretty inexpensive when you consider a lot of other systems at this point.
