Author Topic: Have You Ever Thought About Preserving The Retro Game Or Music & Movie Industry?  (Read 1197 times)

In a sense, but not really. I mean, I'm picky about condition almost to a fault. Cuz if I'm gonna collect I don't want junked up stuff, generally. So you could say that I'm trying to preserve copies in their best state. I don't really think that I'm helping in any meaningful way to actually preserve the media itself. I think that is already largely taken care of by people a great deal more savvy than myself in those practices. I don't think there's any risk of any game in my collection perishing from all existence.

In other ways, I am mildly interested in the preservation of endangered and lost media of other forms. Like obscure music, TV or movies. It fascinates me that people can create digital works of art that become lost to the world because nobody cared enough to back it up. If I ever come into the possession of something that doesn't appear to exist on the Internet, I'd take the necessary steps to get it into the hands of those who could properly archive it.... but such an opportunity is yet to present itself.

if you are following this topic, then you must realize that I cannot preserve any game alone, the only way to preserve games is to take all of the games and to somehow and re-print them and allow them to be re-released in physical copies again before all their data ends up burred in landfills.

I HATE how most of the modern video game Industry is just trashing entire build engines, and just throwing away all that good old retro Technology, WTF???? why are game companies throwing away their old projects? WTF???? I mean after all we have HUGE harddrives now capable of holding ALL those old Games and MOD's on a single hardrive.

And the hardware? well that can also be remanufactured and remade WTF???? and those companies could even make a profit off it. Unless? MY BIGGEST FEAR OF ALL? watching all the  Godforsaken Television and reality shows, and porn shows is all anybody wants to do anymore with their lives anymore.

At least? my Radio Station currently picks up an estimate of about 10,000 listeners every 24 hours indicating that at least? listening to retro Music radio has not died completely? but what about video games? and what about Movies? I mean good movies? not a stupid murder mayhem reality shows?

Where is the FUN MEDIA?????

Now I am not going to even start with politics, but IF MEDIA DIES? We will all be sent back to the stone ages and in horse and buggy

Let's see I can think of some entire good video game programming language engines that were abandoned.

1:Skulltag/Zandronum
2: DICE
3: Quake III
4: Unreal Engine
5: Minecraft
6: Skyrim
7: just about all the sports video games counting all the years that programmers had to modify it from 1990-2010

Wikipedia has more information and

"My own quote on this subject"

"any game engine takes a lot of programming skill and knowledge to build and then even more Creativity to actually make levels or stages with it"

possibility more classic or abandoned ones
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_game_engines

more modern
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_game_engines

it's PATHIETIC HOW MANY OF THESE PROGRAMS WERE BUILT BY HIGH SKILLED SENIOR PROGRAMMERS OF THE PAST ONLY TO GET TOSSED OUT WITHIN LESS THEN 10 YEARS

and how about all those video game companies and developers of the past? who worked their ass off and NOW WHAT? if someone does not preserve their work it would have been for nothing, sure they got paid for it but a lot of those people joined the video game industry to give the future of humanity entertainment

Does anyone care about the deadlines and commitments  and sacrifice that those old 1970's 1980's and 1990's and 2000's and 2010's and even the 2020's programmers, developers and level designers  and fans had to make for our unlimited enjoyments?

I play my games, and you should too!! by preserving them? just take care of them and try not the scratch them too bad, and if they do get scratched badly? just  try to buffer them of give to a someone who can as long as we don't throw out any more games CD' DVDs and Blurays that are not cracked and broken

I'm going to be blunt

Oldgamerz I think you're confusing collecting with preservation.

Warmsingal just brought up it reads like he doesn't think collecting  games really helps with preservation (correct me if I'm wrong there) but he also brings up finding lost media something that can lead to preservation in a way. But your response to his post is to "just buff your games and they're then preserved"

I hate that I keep bringing it up but I brought up Master Recordings of music stuff that was actually preserved, and how it was unfortunate that a lot of them have been destroyed due to incompetence on Universal's part. Your response was effectively "Well I can by a CD at Wal-Mart so I don't care"

All you have effectively done is brag about your collections (on a forum for collecting) , mention maintenance, Suddenly bring up game engines, Ramble about theft, and shilled your internet radio station

I am not mentally stable right now,

I've been like this for a couple of months now. I was not trying to brag, I am actually upset that I don't have the power to share my games with the world, I shilled my radio station because at least I can share the music I have with the world, and that makes me somewhat happy to have people enjoying the music as much as I enjoy keeping the server going for them. I also listen to my own radio station and I love knowing that at the same time I am hearing the music from it I am not alone that their are others enjoying it with me.

I believe in sharing and giving to people even if I don't know them or never met them before, and the radio station allows that to happen. I do not offer anyone any files, but I do offer people some entertainment if they want a random playlist. but I never force other people to listen, it's their own choice.

I was trying to start a conversation and hopefully type on this forum to hopefully save those old games and consoles or even programming engines from complete destruction. I do not know why people continue to toss out older editor's and build engines because, I think it's stupid, and I think creating something for only temporary usage is something an APE would do. Kind of like what an APE does to a Banana  peel in the jungle.

I think collecting plays only a minor role in preservation, mostly as a steward of these physical trinkets that many years down the road, will be seen as novelties of the past. As with anything which stops being mass produced, it's true eventually the number of surviving copies will diminish over time. Seeing as game collecting is so huge, I think a lot of this stuff is going to last a very long time.

That aside, collecting has little to do with the actual preservation of the media itself. That is something entirely different, and already well archived and preserved through emulation, ROMs, etc so there's slim chance it'll ever be lost.

I think media preservation is a worthwhile endeavor, but only in pursuit of that which is actually in danger of being lost. 99% of video games are not that category, outside of unfinished projects, betas, tech demos, etc. A lot of that stuff is just not in the hands of people who thought it was worth saving, but it does surface from time to time on an old development kit, test cart, or hard drive. Usually, people will dump whatever data it contains onto the Internet and there you have it. That's preservation. As a rule, anything you can readily buy at a store, is already well preserved online.

I'm currently in a pretty pessimisitic rut when it comes to preservation of anything. Humanity is currently on a severely dark path. I expect war, authoritarian takeover the likes of which hasn't been seen for near 100 years, famine, genocide from the authoritiarians and eventually nuclear holocost.

Modern humanity has learned nothing from the mistakes of the past and are full steam ahead with instanity at all levels. Our leaders don't have any critical thinking skills beyond what can benefit them in the short term.

So sure, we can try to preserve what our culture once was, but it will be destroyed in seconds at the drop of a nuke.

Chin up my fellowman, by the time any of that happens, if it ever were to happen, I'm certain every one of us here will be way beyond dead. Enjoy the time you have with your kid and family, make another shadowbox or two, or play some more Game Gear games.

As the song goes...

Modern man, evolutionary betrayer
Modern man, ecosystem destroyer
Modern man, destroy yourself in shame
Modern man, pathetic example of Earth's organic heritage
Just a sample of carbon-based wastage
Just a fucking tragic epic of you and I

Not to this extent. As far as I'm concerned they are already "preserved" by being saved from going to the landfills. I believe games are meant to be played, and I don't buy stuff I have no intention of ever playing. Is owning games you never use even preservation? Without experiencing them they might as well be worn out to the point of being broken already. Makes no difference.

Eventually we will run out of (affordable) native hardware to play them on anyway.

This is it right here. The King of Cool nails the hammer on the head once again.
