PS2 controller d-pad and "shape" buttons don't work

I bought a PS2 controller a while ago, and only the joysticks and start/select buttons seem to work; the d-pad, square, X, O, and triangle won't react in any way. I opened the controller, expecting to see torn rubbers, but it's alright. Nothing's dirty in there either, but I still cleaned the contacts to be sure, and it didn't change a thing. Any ideas on what I could try next?

Could be a break in one of the traces on the conductive film. Examine it closely and see if there's a spot where a trace has worn or broken away. There do exist replacements which I'll link for you but it's no guarantee that it'll fix your problem and for what they cost you can just buy another used controller for not much more.

There's three different versions of the conductive film that the Dual Shock 2 uses if you decide to go this route make sure you get the correct one for your controller.
