Entry titles in English?
« on: March 09, 2014, 07:32:54 pm »
When creating new entries earlier today I noticed the form states "Name (English Name)". Does this also apply to items that were never released in English or games that might have a different title in another languages?

Here are some examples:

Nazo no Murasame Jo
English (rough) translation: The Mysterious Murasame Castle
http://vgcollect.com/item/42500

Zelda no Densetsu: Kamigami no Triforce
English translation: The Legend of Zelda: Triforce of the Gods
(Released in Western regions as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past)
http://vgcollect.com/item/16884

So what I'm saying is should the entry names be in full English or just spelled out in our alphabet? Skimming through some Japanese entries there doesn't really seem to be any consistency. There's games like the ones mentioned above that are left in Japanese but written in our alphabet and other games that are fully translated into English like the games below:

Legend of Zelda, The: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64 [JP])
In Japanese: Zeruda no Densetsu: Toki no Okarina
http://vgcollect.com/item/17292

Sin and Punishment
In Japanese: Tsumi to Batsu
http://vgcollect.com/item/21554

Sorry for opening a can of worms but I was wondering what your (anyone's) opinion is on this topic. There's certainly some titles I would not mind seeing in Engruish English, like the Zelda games. At the same time there some games that should almost remain in their native language because there's just some words that simply cannot be translated directly.

I always took this as

here's the Japanese game name: Garou Densetsu - Shukumei no Tatakai
Here's what we know what we know it in English: Fatal Fury
Many player may not know that Garou Densetsu is the same as Fatal Fury.

or some games are just know by different games in English.
JP: Samurai Spirits
NA: Samurai Shodown

It helps so if an English speaking reader sees a game they know what game it is when it was released in English.

If a Japanese Game such as Sin & Punishment or Zelda Ocarina of Time is listed under it's English Name, Then technically it should be under it's Japanese name.  And it's English name should be in the ALT name.

I like to think of it as "title that's on the box of the game" and saying that if it's a game that uses a foreign script like Japanese to write it with English letters.
My collection doesn't include my Steam or PSN games, just physical games.

My 2 cents?

Say it's a Japanese game.

As you're submitting it (and/or simply editing it) just use the field for "Also Known As" to fill in its English (or whatever other languages) title.

*edit*  pretty much what Flea (no...not "she") said  :P

I think the entry should be in English first and then original language as Alt.
Why else would it say English Name when you're making a new entry?

That's a mistake and should be changed to say something like "Name (English script)" or something.

The original title for the region the game was released in should always be the title in the site.

But yeah just to be clear: I don't mean use the English localized title. I mean't to just translate the title into English.
