Auto approve entry updates?
« on: February 25, 2011, 03:30:24 pm »
Any way we can get an automatic approval for updates to in item we have created?

Would this be an issue? I understand why you'd want to approve a modification to an entry someone else has created.

@pceslayer Since all of the data is submitted to the master shared database we are trying to validate all the data.  I want to keep it so that there is always some sort of staff approval just to verify the data. We try to stay on top of the submissions and are constantly approving updates so you really shouldn't see any update sitting out there for more than an hour unless it's submitted during the night.

I can understand that.

Its just that I sometimes forget to add stuff on my initial (and sometimes secondary)edit and end up needing to keep requesting approval.

Each time the fields are cleared and I end up filling them in again because I'm not sure if I did them. lol

I also wondered about this.

I thought that the reason would be something like avoiding instances where someone would do something immature or stupid (like updating a game with false/joke material or pornographic box art)... but then we can add something to the database without it having to be approved.

I dunno... I like it where we can add games to the database without it having to be approved because it massively reduces the hassle and makes things simple (in a VERY good way)... that's actually the reason I'm here, and not some other site like backloggery... but the extreme simplicity and the aforementioned risk come hand-in-hand.

...it does raise the question of why we have to wait for approvals of edits, but can add games to the database without any kind of approval though.

@pceslayer I understand this. I'm looking into other options like maybe giving some authority to users who have submitted X number of updates or something. Still thinking about it.

@tlrtheory The reason behind this is that someone could edit an existing game that hundreds of other users have in their list, thus effecting them regardless of whether they initially submitted it or not. I'd hate to see Mario Bros. title change to "Fuck Your Mom" or something spammy just to fuck with people. When adding a new game, you initially are the only one that it effects and if someone submits something spammy, I'll catch it within a few hours.

Hopefully in the end we can find a happy medium here. I don't want anyone to ever have to jump through any hoops to contribute, this is a huge part of what makes the site so easy to use.

Approval usually only takes a matter of minutes.  I've never had any take more than 30 mins, and I think that was when we had server issues.  Personally, I'd keep it the way it is.

Oh, and if you forget to add something and have to go back and edit it, you don't need to fill all the blanks in again.  Only update what you want to change, anything else will stay the same.

Ah, okay... if that's the case, then everything's fine the way it is :)
