Japanese Rock/Metal
« on: December 31, 2014, 01:12:23 am »
Looking for more good Japanese related Rock/Metal stuff, especially after coming across another band that could come to be a favorite of mine.  Kinda looking for slightly newer stuff also, though it's proving so damn hard to get albums from a lot of these bands.

Doll$Boxx - A newer band that unlike Babymetal, is an actual band that has a lot of mixed influences.  Rock, Metal, Electronic, Pop, it's kinda all in there and so far with the songs I've heard, it's very enjoyable.

Babymetal - Can't have a thread like this without the surprise hit of 2014 that is Babymetal.  No joke, their debut release is on of my favorite albums of the year.

Maximum the Hormone - Just a ridiculous band.  They mix up just about everything into their music.  They feel kinda like the Japanese version of System of a Down lol

Kiryu - Not a band I know well, but I've been trying to get their music so I can get into them more.  And yes, I know about their real weird j-pop spinoff group lol

Supercell - While I initially came across the band cause they did an entire album with the voice of Hatsune Miku, they have a few songs I like on this album.

Versailles - Another band I don't know well, but I really like this one song lol

Sex Machineguns - Don't know too much about the band again, but they play some good straightforward heavy/power metal lol

Of course there are others I know such as Loudness and X Japan, but I'm sorta wanting to get exposed to sorta newer bands, or at least newer albums.  Also recommendations for getting Japanese releases would be helpful as I really want to get the new albums for Doll$Boxx, Kiryu, and Maximum the Hormone.  These are instances were I don't have a problem finding a torrent to get the album, but it's gotten harder to do that reliably recently so I'm out of luck at the moment for certain albums.  It was nice being able to easily get Babymetal through iTunes, but I can't find any of this stuff on either iTunes or Amazon.

By far the best Japanese metal band imo is Onmyouza. The lead singer, Kuro Neko is a freakin goddess!

I only know Maximum the Hormone and Supercell.

GOD TIER SuperCell & EGOIST

All Hail God Ryo

and you shouldn't forget about Nagi, Koeda & Chelly. Hatsune is great and all but not as these three.

Music from Japan is my specialty... I follow a lot of the small VK/Goth bands, have been for the better part of two decades. If it's rock/metal you're looking for...

Moi dix Mois (Me ten Months)

Kagrra

umbrella

lix

BLOOD

Dir en grey

LAREINE

MALICE MIZER

Laputa

I could go all day, hopefully you'll find something. More into industrial myself, but I listen to a pretty big variety. If anyone wants obscure music references from Japan or Europe, I'm your girl! ^^

Thanks for the bands.  The only one in particular that jumped out at me was Kagrra, good for something abit more chill.  A shame the band isn't around any longer.  I might have to see if I can find their music.  This is always the hard part of liking Japanese music lol

It's terrible what happened to Isshi... R.I.P.  There's tons of their stuff on YouTube. I'd recommend starting off with their "Shizuku" album from 2007. It really encapsulates the different styles they did. The first song (and the first single) "Utakata" is just to die for... It's probably the best mix of traditional Japanese and modern rock that I've heard. If you're into electronic stuff at all and want something real mello, go with Schwarz Stein. They're the reason I fell in love with electronica. Songs like "transient" "Queen of Decadence" "Current" "fester love" and "Emergence of Silence" always help chill me out. It's an expensive hobby buying originals, but even the least known bands have something to sample on YouTube. I post links to videos I find on my Twitter account @RachaelWickham if you're interested. ^^

I listen to a few, probably more mainstream bands.  I think.  I'm admittedly not that familiar with the scene and popularity of these bands.

Coffins

Dragon Guardian

The only other bands I have are Doujin bands.  Commonly referred to as Touhou Metal to be specific.

Kissing the Mirror

Stratiotes

Thousand Leaves

*Note: The Coffins video linked here has a slight hiccup in it at the beginning.

Dragon Guardian I liked, some power metal is always fun.  Not so much for the last three bands.  Honestly, those three sounded pretty much the same as the other lol

Yeah they kind of do.  The albums are structured very differently and they vary quite a bit.  With the exception of maybe Thousand Leaves.  Of the 4 albums of theirs I have, Twilight Symphony, Lunatic Dawn, and Immortal Vengeance are kinda same-y.  Liquidarzation on the other hand sounds nothing like the aforementioned.  It also doesn't fall into the Rock/Metal category, by a long shot.

You would almost try hard to convince somebody that Liquidarzation came out in 2010 and Immortal Vengeance was 2011 and it was the same band.

This is the only link I can find to that album on Youtube.
