The answer to the question is no.

The Sega Master System is not region locked.

You can play all region SMS games on any region console without problems.

You can also play them on the Retron 5 or Sega Genesis if you get a Power Base Mini from: www.stoneagegamer.com.

Well, PAL games will run faster because of the difference in refresh rates, and I think I remember reading that one or two games simply will not work on NTSC systems. I can't find a proper list for that, sorry.

Japanese/Taiwanese games will not play on the system. They simply do not fit. NTSC, EU, PAL, Brazilian, and Australian games will all fit/play.

I have heard that there are a few games that will not fire up but so far, I have not found one.

I've personally used USA and UK carts no problem. Haven't tried Japan.

The Master System did very well in the UK and Brazil so they had more of each title released and sold there. Here in America Nintendo was king so some games never got released here. In the event they did we got much fewer copies than the UK and Brazil.

Yeah, but your talking about a demographic that will also pay $40 extra for a cardboard box.

I totally agree with you by the way.

I bought the Japanese version of Super Bonk and Super Metroid rather than pay the crazy prices the U.S. versions were going for.

But my primary interest is in playing the games. Not in having every game for my systems CIB.
