either I got a good deal or I got ripped off (kirby super star)
« on: January 03, 2016, 10:07:16 pm »
I went to a video games store earlier today and saw a copy of kirby super star for the snes. I've been looking for that game for quite some time so I didnt really mind paying a good amount of money for it. There was a price sticker for 120$ CAN (about 86$US) on it. So I asked the guy working there if it's complete and he said yes. We opened it and it was really CIB even with nintendo ad. Now, knowing the game is worth some money (not know how much exactly) and really wanting the game, I bought it without even checking the price on ebay.
Now I am home and I just checked ebay.ca and there isn't a lot of them for sale and they  go for over 180$CAN(129$US) and none of them are as great as the one I bought. However, that chain (they do have a lot of store all over Quebec) is known to sell game for  more then what they go for and now I am wondering if they sold me a fake.
The box, book, cart and everything is in really really good shape (see photos) and the board looks like a real one. I'd really appreciate it if someone could compare his/hers board with mine and tell me if it's legit. Any feedback is appreciated and I really hope I got a good deal out of it. thanks for reading

Here's a guide for spotting fakes: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=100252

As for price, I'm looking at VGPC sold cib listings, most are around $70-80, the ones you see at $130 on ebay usually take a long time to sell at that price. You did fine. There's also a remake for this on the ds that's about 20 bucks cib as well.

Thanks for the heads up on the remake! I'll get that one!

Box is real, you can tell that it's grey card with sticker paper. As far as I know, no repros are going to that kinda trouble yet. I don't see anything off about it. Sometimes stores give you a break on the really expensive stuff.

Based on your pictures it looks legit to me.

The only "issue" with your copy is it appears to be a Majesco reissue release as evidenced by the "Made in Mexico" printed on the cartridge. In the twilight years of the SNES, Majesco had arranged a deal with Nintendo and several other publishers to re-release some of their better known games as companies were shifting their focus to the 32/64-bit consoles. Most of the Majesco releases were inferior in quality as their labels on the carts didn't look as sharp and they reprinted the instruction books in black & white. I noticed yours is has a color manual so check the spine to see if it says "Made in Mexico" or "Made in Japan". What could have happened is the store owner Frankensteined a complete copy together from different sources.  :P

I'm on my crappy work computer that blocks images, so I can't see it.  But as Flashback2012 pointed out, Majesco re-released many SNES and Genesis games while Nintendo and Sega moved on to the next generation.  I've had both the original and Majesco versions of Super Castlevania IV for the SNES and Castlevania Bloodlines for the Genesis.  The cardstock used for the box isn't as thick and isn't as glossy as the originals.  It feels like a cheaper grade of paper.  The labels aren't as shiny or thick and the manuals are printed in black & white.

In any event, even if it's a reprint, you did fine IMO.

thanks for all the answers. Looks like a majesco game. Box and cart have a M (I'm guessing for Mexico?) before the article number but the booklet is a US one in color starting with a U if anyone wondering.

Yep I checked mine ( US but the Made in Japan version) and the board is identical. For the rest yes it is a re-print and I don't think it affect at all the price you paid. Not a lot of people are aware of it so you got it for a very good price. J'ai acheté le mien il y a 3 mois 5$ de plus que la tienne avec à peu prés le même état physique.

Just as a side-note, the shop you bought it from may very well not have known it was cobbled together from two different versions.  Many collectors - such as the very people on this site - cobble together items to make a complete edition.  Heck, I just did it with the God of War III Collector's Edition and Ninja Gaiden 3 Collector's Edition.  Bought them both without the games themselves and picked up the games to complete the sets.  In the case of Ninja Gaiden 3, I was also missing the soundtrack, but found brand-new ones on eBay for $4.95 with free shipping.  So as soon as that arrives, I'll have a complete CE for that as well.
