What's there to freak out about, it's not like they are making another Half-Life game.

Wait, they still have hope?  Even after the writer retired?  Come on.

Half Life is Valve's flagship series and it would make millions even if it sucked. Of course it's coming out, it would make no sense to not release it. People come and go, and this guy quoting means nothing in regards to Half Life 3 coming out.

Yeah no kidding.  Half-Life 3 is a 100% guarantee.  They are clearly just waiting to settle into their new engine, with possibly Half-Life 3 as the flagship title for it, though there's talk of Left 4 Dead 3 out in 2017, which is made by Valve now, so that should be running Source 2 also.

Also I feel like the writing was the least important part of the Half-Life series lol Half-Life 1 and 2 was never known for their stories.

*EDIT*
Don't mean that to sound disparaging of the writer himself...

Let's be honest; there are probably any number of talented writers that would love to work on half Life 3. So it isn't the end of the world; the game still will happen at some point.

However what it does confirm is that it likely isn't in the pipeline anytime soon.

How does this confirm anything other than a writer who worked for Valve left the company? We don't even know if he was working on Half Life 3, and even if he was, the story is one of the first things that is decided upon when developing any game (assuming there is a story). I'm sure Valve employs at least half a dozen other very talented writers, some who may have even had a hand in the other Half Life games as well. Would any of them quitting mean anything in regards to Half Life 3? No, it wouldn't.

People need to calm down. It's like anytime there is "news" regarding anything Half Life people want to make it into something that it isn't just so they can go around and spout "Confirmed!!!" or "Cancelled!"

It will come out and it has been under development, I would bet money on that. It sucks that it has been nearly 9-years since we got episode 2, but I'd rather wait a decade for another ground breaking title than a COD clone with aliens.
