Missing Games in Database
« on: April 25, 2016, 03:56:30 am »
Hello,

I am sorry if this has been mentioned before.

I decided to add in some games I purchased recently and upon entering them I discovered that a number of games I input previously had just up and vanished. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Most probably because the entry was already in the database and you created a double. Entries shouldn't start with "The", it should look like this - "Legend of Zelda, The: Twilight Princess."

Welcome to the site!

Do you have any more information about these games? Did you submit new items or were these games that you added to your collection that are now no longer there? What were the names of the items?

We don't usually delete games entries, especially if someone has added it to their collection. If it is a duplicate database entry, we'll merge the records, retaining the users who have added either entry to their collection.

Hello,

I've actually been a member of the site for a few years now haha. Honestly I can't remember the names of all the titles because there were a lot. The games were placed in  over the last few years and while going through my collection I noticed a number of them were gone. I never create a new entry unless I am 100% sure it has not already been created. I think I have made less than 10 new entries if I am correct.

A buddy of mine mentioned their was a bug on vg collect a while back that was patched, so I am thinking it may have happened a long time ago.

No they were not new entries. Everything I place in my database here is based on existing entries. I have made very few new entries over the last few years so it's definitely not a newbie mistake lol

Don't scare me, I rely on this site to keep track of what I own and what I want to own. If anything were to go missing, I may never know about it and I'd be kinda screwed while managing my collection.

I honestly don't know what ffmaniac2050 is referring to.  Way back in our first year, 2011, we lost some data, but nothing else has happened since then.  Also Matt changed the way backups are handled after this incident so it never happens again.  (If you are still worried you can always export your collection to a spreadsheet as well).

Hm, that is very odd indeed. Occasionally I swear I've added things in before that I find later were never added, but I always assumed that maybe it was just an error on my part.

As pacpix has said, I don't recall Matt ever mentioning anything about losing information. We lost some stuff in the forums, but as far as the database and collections go, those were always backed up.

But yeah, that's not a bad idea about exporting your collection from time to time. That way, you can always double-check if any info does go missing.  Items being merged or edited shouldn't affect the users who have that item in their collection...

In any case, thanks for mentioning it, ffmaniac2050! I always make the mistake of assuming someone's new when I haven't seen the name much in the forum. I should learn to check the profile page to see if they're actually new or not ;)

No worries! Glad you guys are always quick to respond. I'm going to actually double check my whole collection over the next few days. I'm finding additional games that I know I put in a while back but they don't seem to be present on here. Also going to export everything afterwards. On the bright side, I have more games than I thought I did 24 hours ago haha!

Haha, always better than the other way around... When you add games to your collection then find that they're not actually where you thought they were  :-[

What i sometimes have is adding a game to the database, and then forget to add it to my collection  ::).
