What are your top 10 JRPG's? For each generation.
« on: March 25, 2018, 09:20:16 pm »
What are your top 10 JRPGs? I should add it's probably smart to separate it into top 10 for each generation.

I.e Top 10 8 bit JRPG;s, Top 10 16 bit JRPGs, 32 Bit, 128 Bit? etc.. or 3rd,4th,5th,6th,7th Generation.

It doesn't have to be in english. Fan translations or no translation at all is allowed as long as you can prove it has some merit or quality.

Oh god. Oh my god. This is just brutal. I can't order my babies like that. Okay. I'll try. Saying that though, I'm very picky with my JRPGs, a lot of them (especially more recent ones) I'm not a fan of.
I'm counting this as the traditional JRPG genre rather than RPGs from Japan. I'm protective of what I do and don't consider to be JRPGs. No ARPGs or TRPGs or anything like that.

16-bit
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Final Fantasy V
4. EarthBound
5. Final Fantasy IV
6. Super Mario RPG
8. Phantasy Star II
(Haven't played a ton of 16-bit games so this'll have to be a top 6-that-I-like)

32/64-bit
1. Final Fantasy VIII
2. Final Fantasy IX
3. Final Fantasy VII
4. Digimon World 3
5. Pokemon R/S/E
6. Panzer Dragoon Saga
7. Parasite Eve
8. Mother 3
9. Persona 2: Innocent Sin (haven't played Eternal Punishment)
10. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Game Boy Color)
Might have cheated by putting GBA games here but I was struggling to think of more games. I have a few import Saturn JRPGs ready to fly once I become fluent in nipspeak though.

128-bit
1. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES
2. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
3. Final Fantasy X
4. Skies of Arcadia
5. Shadow Hearts
6. Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht (haven't played the others yet, still need to finish this)
7. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
8. Shadow Hearts: From the New World (haven't played Covenant, still need to finish the first game)
9. Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call (Nocturne for y'all across the pond)
10. Pokemon Colosseum
Tales of the Abyss would probably be on here if I'd played more of it, need to pick it back up again sometime.

All later gens together cause there are nearly no good JRPGs anymore and it'd be hard to make a list otherwise
1. Persona 5
2. Lost Odyssey
3. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth & Hacker's Memory (they're basically the same game)
4. Tales of Graces
5. Radiant Historia
6. Tales of Vesperia
7. Pokemon X/Y
8. Pokemon B/W
9. Hexyz Force
10. Resonance of Fate

Don't have enough for top 10's, and on certain systems I played absolutely zero, so I'll just state my favorites based on systems.  Also JRPG is really pretty varied, but the first type of games that come to mind when I hear JRPG tends to be turn based/tactical based gameplay experiences, for the most part.  There are exceptions to this as it's really just up to my own tastes.  Otherwise the term is so varied that it's impossible to pin things down.  Like Bloodborne, and Nier: Automata are JRPG's, but I don't put them alongside Xenoblade or Final Fantasy VII.  They are action games first, more so than an RPG.

SNES - Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG
PS1 - Final Fantasy VII
PS2 - Final Fantasy X
PS3 - Valkyria Chronicles (Though I technically played the PC remaster)
PS4 - Final Fantasy XV
Switch - Xenoblade Chronicles 2

I've dabbled in plenty of other JRPG's, but there's a lot I haven't beaten, such as most of the Final Fantasy series, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Xenoblade Chronicles, Persona 5 etc, but because of that, I don't count them.

Are you just trolling? You don't even have your own list!
Because I'm not an expert on the topic. And I already know what I know, I'm here to learn what I don't know, or might not know. And perhaps others are as well?

And where's your list by the way?

I didn't mean to be rude, it's just a really massive undertaking to make a top 10 for every generation in a single thread, ya know? It's also common to start with your by filling out your own list, which has a way of showing you're serious. Perhaps my perception is skewed because this is the kind of thing I might do ironically making fun of how prevalent list threads are.

As a show of good faith, I'll attempt this here massive list... when I think of JRPGs, I don't tend to think of action RPGs, so I am excluding those... tactical RPGs I do count though.

8-bit era:
1. Dragon Quest IV
2. Final Fantasy II
3. Dragon Quest III
4. Final Fantasy III
5. Final Fantasy
6. Mother
7. Dragon Quest II
8. Dragon Quest
There are many more JRPGs not release in America that are probably good, but I've never played them enough. In fact, this list is probably every 8-bit RPG I've played (enough to rate).

16-Bit era:
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
4. Super Mario RPG
5. Lufia
6. Live-A-Live
7. Dragon Quest V
8. Final Fantasy V
9. Lufia II
10. Final Fantasy IV

64-Bit (Maybe not accurate, N64/PS1 era)
1. Dragon Quest VII
2. Final Fantasy Tactics
3. Final Fantasy VIII
4. Final Fantasy IX
5. Final Fantasy VII
6. Paper Mario
7. Suikoden II
8. Wild Arms 2
9. The Legend of Dragoon

I started losing interest in more pure JRPGs starting here.

PS2 Era:
1. Final Fantasy X
2. Star Ocean 3
3. Phantom Brave
4. Mother 3
5. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
6. Final Fantasy X-2
7. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
8. Fire Emblem
9. La Pucelle Tactics
10. Golden Sun

By this point I had almost lost all interest in JRPGs. I have not played a single JRPG of the last 2 gens... plenty of Western RPGs which may be my favorite genre, but not JRPGs. After FFX I lost interest in Final Fantasy, which was once potentially my favorite series (as may be told by it's frequency on the list). Other than Pokemon, which I have played every entry into, the last time I think I played a true JRPG to completion was Dragon Quest IX creeping up on a decade ago.

Only JRPGs? From every console generation??
Lord, I have a tough time just putting together a list of my favorite RPGs ever, regardless of generation. And I’ll be the first to admit I’m no expert on JRPGs.

I’ll just do my personal top 10 JRPGs (I hope I’m not forgetting one...):
10. Super Mario RPG
9. FF IV
8. FF IX
7. FF XII
6. Chrono Trigger
5. FF VII
4. DQ 8
3. Chrono Cross (come at me, bro)
2. FF X
1. FF VI

Doubt I have enough for top 10 each gen but I'll give it a shot.

Didn't like 3rd gen RPGs so skipping that.

4th Gen:
1. EarthBound
2. Super Mario RPG
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Final Fantasy VI
5. Final Fantasy IV
6. Terranigma
7. Secret of Evermore
8. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
9. Secret of Mana
10. Breath of Fire II

5th Gen:
1. Final Fantasy IX
2. Paper Mario
3. Final Fantasy VII
4. Legend of Mana
5. Breath of Fire III
6. Xenogears
7. Pokemon Crystal
8. Chrono Cross
9. Final Fantasy VIII
10. Breath of Fire IV

6th Gen:
1. Final Fantasy XII
2. Final Fantasy X
3. Mother 3
4. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
5. Pokemon Emerald
6. Golden Sun
7. Golden Sun: The Lost Age
8. Dark Cloud 2
9. Kingdom Hearts
10. Tales of Symphonia

7th Gen:
1. Pokemon Black/White 2
2. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
3. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
4. Final Fantasy XIII
5. Final Fantasy XIII-2
6. Radiant Historia
7. Xenoblade Chronicles
8. Pokemon Platinum
9. Super Paper Mario
10. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

8th Gen:
1. Bravely Default
2. Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire
3. Pokemon X/Y
4. Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon
5-10. ???

Making this list made me realize how disinterested I've become in JRPGs over the years. They were amazing during the 16-bit era, still amazing in the 32-bit era, kind of dropped a bit in the 128-bit, then took a steep nosedive last gen, and today, I struggle to even think of 10 I've played. Sad. :(

8-bit era:
1. Final Fantasy II
2. Final Fantasy I

I haven't really played many 8-Bit J-RPGs. I'd like to play Dragon Quest and Phantasy Star some time.

16-Bit era:
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Final Fantasy IV
3. Shining Force 2
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Shining Force
6. Breath of Fire 2
7. Breath of Fire
8. Shining in the Darkness

Again haven't really played enough to have a full top 10.

32/64-Bit era:
1. Suikoden 2
2. Final Fantasy VIII
3. Wild ARMs
4. Final Fantasy IX
5. Suikoden
6. Final Fantasy VII
7. Vandal Hearts 2
8. Breath of Fire IV
9. Breath of Fire III
10. Grandia

PS2 Era:
1. Final Fantasy X
2. Persona 4
3. Grandia 2
4. Shadow Hearts
5. Shadow Hearts 2
6. Arc: Twilight of the Spirits
7. Suikoden III
8. Suikoden V
9. Star Ocean 3
10. Dark Cloud 2

PS3 Era:
1. Star Ocean 4
2. Tales of Vesperia
3. Lost Odyssey
4. Tales of Graces-f
5. The Last Story
6. Final Fantasy XIII-2
7. Final Fantasy XIII

I kind of had a hiatus from J-RPGs during this era. I did play some other J-RPGs but I don't like them. There's a few titles I want to get back to, so maybe I'll have a Top 10 by then.

I don't think I can do 10 for each generation, that's a lot of listing.

But I will give you my top 10 RPGs, ever:

1.   King’s Field Series (PS1/PS2)  - If I separated them, it would dominate this list.
2.   The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Game of the Year Edition (Xbox 360)
3.   Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition (PC)
4.   Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance (Xbox)
5.   Crystalis (NES)
6.   The Legend of Legaia (PS1)
7.   Golden Sun/GS: The Lost Age (GBA) (it’s really just one continuous game/story)
8.   Chrono Trigger (SNES)
9.   Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (DS)
10.   Wild Guns (PS1)

I could barely make a top 10 JRPGs of all time list lol. It's a genre I wanted so badly to get really into, and at one point I kind of was, but I lose interest in 80% of all JRPGs I start and never finish them.

I own a lot of them, and have played quite a few, but for whatever reason my interest in them has declined steadily since the mid-2000s. I seem to play more JRPGs that I dislike than ones I actually like. I probably could throw together a top 10, but I'm currently replaying some this year to re-evaluate where they stand and I just don't feel like it right now.
