I have no problem with it, especially considering all the other perks that come alongside it. Hell, at this point the services are worth it for the games they give you alone.

Doesn't bug me much anymore.  The one good thing is that at least games won't be screwed forever with bad bugs, though the other issue is that sometimes games ship with bugs more often that then get patched out.

Yeah, not really an issue. Certain people love to moan about day one patches and all that, but at least console games can now be patched relatively hassle-free. Having to download either the actual full game or a massive chunk of it as a "patch" is another matter entirely, though.

I'm only annoyed by it- considering most of the time, the system will still run the disc whether you're online or not, as long as the company that made it actually did quality control you'll have a playable game. It's that so many are skimping on that step becuase they can patch it later that worries me.

What drives me crazier is mandatory game downloads, even if you have the disc- what's the damn point of making a 500 GB hard drive, then requiring the data from the disc to be downloaded completely to play so I still have to dump up to 100 GB in every time I get a new game?! A $200 multi-TB external shouldn't be a requirement for anything greater than a medium-ish collection. It's made worse watching the Switch do amazing things with a fraction of the data, meaning we know at least some of these guys are just being lazy about compressing their code.

What about some BluRay discs requiring an internet connection in order to play?

stealthrush

Crummy, another reason why i'm better off not playing modern games!

What about some BluRay discs requiring an internet connection in order to play?

I haven't encountered that yet, but that is some grade-A bullshit & I hope I never accidentally buy such a disc.

There are a couple I have run into. On a PS3 at least, it wouldn't give an error, but it would just boot to a black screen and you can't use the PS button or anything else to back out of the player. Basically you'd have to turn off the system, which I really hate to do. So I just keep the WLAN connected at all times on it, and when it encounters these movies, it will just sit at a black screen for 1 or 2 minutes before it starts playing.

This requirement to connect to the internet is due to the BD instructing the player to download trailers. Maybe there is a setting I don't know about to disable this. My concern would be if some of these BDs will turn into (non-gold) DIVX discs once the trailer servers go offline, if they can't be usable in consumer players. (A difference is DIVX encryption is still intact, those with a computer could rip a BD to file)

The world is rapidly embracing The Internet of Things in all ways in can possibly be implemented. Whether it's our cars, our fridges, our medical treatment, and yes, our game consoles, nearly all facets of our day to day lives in modern society are getting connected to the internet. There are obviously some issues with this, but it's sort of becoming the evolution of modern society and I'm certain that it will only become more and more prevalent as time goes on.

Regarding my personal feelings about modern game consoles needing to always be online, I don't mind it now, but in 10-years when support for the PS4 or XBONE ends that might be a totally different story. I really hope that both companies keep legacy gamers in mind (which they probably won't given how small we are as a group) and keep repositories of patches for most games on their consoles always available for download. If they do, no problem, but if they don't than many modern games will be virtually unplayable. It's really disturbing how heavily patches some games are at launch and how incredibly broken they are without those day one patches. Hell, many games are deliberately unplayable without their initial patches because of concerns over unauthorized people playing the game early before the game launched. It could very will be a mess, and sadly the only way to protect against this would be to either install a massive HDD in your PS4 or XBONE, we're talking 10TB+ and download patches for every game you own before they pull the plug. And you better have backups of that massive drive, because if it ever dies or gets corrupted you'll be SOL. I really hope Sony, MS and Nintendo think about this before they cease mainstream support for their current consoles.

I haven’t used my PS3 as a Blu-ray player since I got a stand alone. There’s gotta be a setting to disable that. I have it enabled on my player.
DIVX was terrible. Couldn’t even take a disc to a friends house without them buying or renting it too.

I don't mind it personally since every modern device is somewhat connected online.

What I do mind is modern games being released in an unfinished state that requires multiple patches a few months down to line to "fix it". Now that is BS.

It runs my experience a lot. I remember a time when we put in a disc and it didn't need an update. The multiplayer aspect is cool tho.
