Common Name Exception Poll #2: Pro Evolution Soccer
« on: October 01, 2018, 10:55:18 am »
Across many websites, including ours and the others we have as our common name sources, have no 100% compliance for naming the Pro Evolution Soccer games where their titles include both the full name and the abbreviated name as part of their logo. As such, this has led to much confusion as to what to call these games when listed in a database. This vote was brought forth by user ffly, after noting that neither or our sources can be used as the reference for this series as contradiction exists even there.

Using the example of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, any of the following can be viable:
- PES 2008: The main part of the front logo
- Pro Evolution Soccer 2008: the spine and copyright text title
- PES 2008: Pro Evolution Soccer: the full front logo
- Pro Evolution Soccer: PES 2008: the reverse of the front logo, as it appears on some entries in our db

Option 5 in the poll is for applying the common name of a game without care for the games in this series to have a particular format among all releases.

Examples.
Pro Evolution Soccer PES 2008 [UK] Xbox 360 [EU]
https://vgcollect.com/item/53001
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 - Xbox 360 [NA]
https://vgcollect.com/item/22563
PES 2009: Pro Evolution Soccer - PS2 [AU]
https://vgcollect.com/item/103336
PES 2015 - PS4 [EU]
https://vgcollect.com/item/150082

This poll is only for games that use the combined PES/Pro Evolution Soccer logo with the year, and not the previous versions such as Pro Evolution Soccer 4, which does not use the PES abbreviation. Of course, for these other entries, they can have PES put into alt-name.

When poll has completed, we will determine the appropriate text for alt-name.
As before, poll will run 7 days and you can change your vote if you change your mind about something.

this is another one that is very similar to the last thread. early games in the series were just called pro evolution soccer https://vgcollect.com/item/60418

this continued into the ps2 era as well and as such I have to say it probably needs to be written out as every game has "Pro Evolution Soccer" but not every game has "PES"
PS2 Palooza: 8/2XXX games finished
Now Playing: Dark cloud
Stopped recording so now back on track.

Yes, this poll does not cover the game as in your example. Only the ones that have the PES XXX and Pro Evolution Soccer in the title, as in the examples. See above I also discounted the example Pro Evolution Soccer 4 as not being covered by this, there is no confusion as to what to call it because it only has one name on the item itself.

I will amend the first post to clarify this.

When we have a PES game where the front title is:
PES XXXX
Pro Evolution Soccer

we will use Pro Evolution Soccer XXXX and PES XXXX in the alt-name.
