General / Re: Sega announcement

hopefully Sonic Mania 2

I'm hoping for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) 2.

Though it'd be real neat if part of the Sega branding thing the Xbox Series X will play Dreamcast and Saturn games.

If that were to happen, a lot of people not even on fence between the PS5 and Xbox Series X may suddenly become interested in the next generation. If some sort of Sega-branded Xbox deal were to play out successfully, this would be really cool. Nevertheless, I think this is a pretty cheap avenue that Microsoft can take in attracting a new market.

I can't bring myself to download their launcher, free games be damned.  :P

You can still add games to your account's library without having the launcher installed, in the event that you one day change your mind regarding EGS.

Site Feedback / Re: Why isn't Visual Novel added as a genre??
« on: May 31, 2020, 06:44:45 pm »
I would also like this added, I always stumble over what to add them as.

Adventure.

I would say,,,,no. Visual novels are a popular genre, shocked they don't have their own genre here. +1 from me.

I'm not disagreeing that visual novel as a genre should be added as an option on this website. I was addressing OP who was unsure what to categorize visual novel games in how these types of games should be categorized in the meantime.

However, I still am of the opinion that visual novels are a sub-genre to the broad adventure genre. This post I found explains the idea nicely. Despite this, there are still plenty of visual novels listed that warrant a differentiation to both categories by adding visual novel as an option for users to select.

No, I'm not. I'm quite content with the PS4 still.

Were it just me, I probably would pass on the PS5 for its first two years or so, but, knowing my partner, we'll probably own one on launch day.

On a related note, Sludge Life released today and is free to download via EGS for the entire year (offer expires May 28, 2021.)

General / Re: What's the best free haul you've ever gotten?
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:49:55 am »
It would have to be that time I found a NES and about 40 games in the garbage in 1998.

This is similar to one of my best hauls. I found a Wii with about ten accessories and a dozen or so games near a garbage area about two years ago.

I also inherited a Turbografx-16, a Turbo Tap, and ten games from some extended family when I was very young around 1997. Playing it was my first experience with gaming, and I still have it all.

It's not too often that Humble Bundle offers a free game with no strings attached.

Determining value for one-of-a-kind items is never easy. Looking at the few completed eBay listings for other LRG printing plates, the prices definitely vary but are all past the $100 mark. Truth be told, unless I desperately needed the money, I would keep it. It's definitely a collector's piece and something to tell others about when mentioning your collection.

Modern Video Games / Re: Custom Switch spines
« on: May 13, 2020, 06:17:25 pm »
I'm not too keen on custom or alternative artwork for game cases, but I think that spine alterations could be okay if done right. Although, I think that omitting the publisher panel would better promote the customization as something more official and altogether have the package look sleeker. Especially so since there are inconsistencies in the designs when you begin looking at Mortal Kombat 11. Having the spine artwork trapped between two ends is making the design less successful—at least to me.

Sorry if you weren't looking for any critiques or feedback, but I figured I'd throw in my opinion as being a designer.

Edit: I'm definitely not sure how I misread the listing as wrong as I initially did. Sorry!

General / Re: What's your favorite game from each generation?
« on: May 10, 2020, 10:58:42 pm »
Gen 2: Kaboom! (Atari 2600)
Gen 3: Final Fantasy (NES)
Gen 4: Bonk's Revenge (Turbografx-16)
Gen 5: Final Fantasy IX (PlayStation)
Gen 6: We Love Katamari (PlayStation 2)
Gen 7: Opoona (Wii)
Gen 8: Nier: Automata (PlayStation 4)

Start with the Wii. Games are still fairly cheap and available.

Agreed. On that note, the system itself is cheap and also allows you to play GameCube titles, though some of those are getting to become pricey.

As far as recommending titles, it's hard to suggest since your current catalog for this site is limited. However, you can't go wrong with first-party Nintendo titles, such as Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., etc.
