Never mind, it's working now. My dad found a loose wire. So he soldered it back on and it's working now...how did I miss that cable when I checked it  :(
Well, whatever, it's working now, and the error seems to be gone too.

NICE! I wish I could have a pinball machine of my own, but alas they are too expensive and to space consuming.
I know, we specifically saved space for this. And the pricing is probably why we barely received any other gifts  :P. Thankfully, my dad has a lot of nostalgia for it, so he's willing to pay for it. Heck, looks like he found his passion. He now wants to get a photoplay machine too! No idea where to put it or how to pay for it, but whatever :p.

We recently received a restored Blackwater 100 pinball machine. This machine was originally produced by Bally Midway.

The guy told us restoring it was difficult, particularly in the case of some paddles. The game features five paddles, the two main ones, two on a second floor, and one on a higher floor near the bottom of the machine. He told us those higher paddles were particularly difficult, because they use unique spindles that were made exclusively for the machine, and are thus no longer in production. I don't know he fixed it, but he did it...or so we thought.

After just a few rounds, the left paddle on the second floor and the elevated paddle near the bottom both broke down. When I press the button now, the regular left paddle works without issue, but those other two don't do anything. The guy who fixed it is a professional, and he'll come back to fix it soon, but I figured I could ask for help here. We already checked the fuses, but we couldn't find any burned out ones. Naturally we checked in the machine, but we didn't open it up or anything. We just opened the door and looked into it, and we couldn't see anything that way. We'd rather not open it up without knowing what we're doing, especially if he's coming to fix it anyway.

There's also another issue. After turning it off and on, it would sometimes get stuck on an error. I don't remember specifically what it was, but it was something with the number 8 (either error 8 or failing of test 8 or something like that). I did check the manual, but I couldn't find anything on this message. Turning the machine off and on didn't solve it at first, but eventually it just started working again. Do any of you know what it means and how to solve it if it happens again?

Besides him coming to fix it, I still wanted to ask you guys whether you know anything about this. Any tips on how to solve these issues? Sorry there aren't any photos, I didn't think of taking them when we were checking it, and I don't think everyone here would appreciate it if I just opened it for no reason.

How about this?

I've been waiting for this since Christmas! My dad got it for us as a family gift, but it was still being restored. Thankfully, it's finally here!

A restored Blackwater 100 pinball machine! Produced by Bally Midway, this machine was unique in that you start out with 3 balls. This mechanic was critised however, and there's a software update available which limits you to one ball at a time at all times. Luckily, we don't have that software version :) . And I even have the original manual with it and everything! Granted, that manual is in terrible shape, but at least I have it  :) .

The machine was kept as original as possible, which is why the casing has lost part of its colour. Heck, even the coin slot still takes guldens (the previous Dutch currency, now replaced by the euro).  It's on free play though, so that's not an issue.

Sadly, of course it was too good to be true. He restored the Suzuki logos by putting stickers with new logos over the original painted logos, and of course those stickers got loose after hitting them with a ball once. A stupid design choice if you ask me, but whatever.
Worst of all, two of the five paddles broke down as soon as the guy who restored it left. This makes racking up points a lot harder. The sad part is that these paddles are built in with parts that were produced specifically for this machine, so those parts are no longer available. So fixing them is very difficult (and that may also explain why they don't work now). But we already contacted the guy who restored it, and he'll probably come in to fix it soon. Other than that, I'm super happy with it! Definitely the gem of my collection!...until I move out and I can't take it with me  :P

EDIT: Never mind, it's working now. Apparently the whole problem was a loose wire...

ANOTHER EDIT: Never mind, now all the flippers on the left broke down. Guess we'll just have to call in the mechanic. Also, I know the plastic is old, but we literally hit a hole in the plastic with one of the balls. We had to take out the entire playing field to get the ball back. I know the plastic is old, but for it to do that, wow...

I just went to my local dump store and picked up this baby for just €3!

Granted, it's in a somewhat rough shape, and there's no controller, memory card or games to go with it, but €3 for the system is still a steal!
King's Day is coming up, maybe I can snatch a cheap controller there :)

You just said a lot of things that I don't understand, but nice find!   ;)

Welcome to the site!
I have no idea what you call it in English, but with dump store I meant a store where you can drop off your old stuff, and they then re-sell it (thrift shop? I don't know...).

I didn't even think of it being a Dutch holiday when I wrote about King's Day ;D. Basically, it's a Dutch holiday where we celebrate the King's birthday (it has been known as Queen's day up until a few years ago when Princess Beatrix passed on the crown to her son). One of the biggest traditions on King's Day is the huge amount of flea markets happening literally everywhere. Almost every town has a flea market on King's Day. I should be able to find a controller somewhere then :).
Did that answer your questions? Also, thanks for the welcome :)

VGCollect for Android / I can't even log in on the app...
« on: March 19, 2016, 01:11:55 pm »
I know the app is currently considered unsupported, and I know that it's filled with bugs, but this seems to be a pretty major one: I can't even log in! I'm 100% certain I filled in my password and username correctly, and I tried to log in multiple times. My internet connection is fine too. But it simply tells me my username and/or password are incorrect. Is this a familiar issue? How can I fix this?

I only had a Wii during the last generation, and I only got a PS3 last december. However, the Wii was my first console ever, and I have a ton of nostalgia for it. I don't really have any games that stand out to me as unknown but amazing, but there are a few titles that have gone fairly unnoticed which are actually rather good. These are just the ones I have:

3. Barnyard

Based on the Nickelodeon animated movie, Barnyard is one of the best licensed games I've played. Granted, I played it as a kid, so there's some nostalgia here. And it's most definitely for kids. I recently played it again, and there isn't much to find for adults. But as a kid, I absolutely loved it. The overworld is varied and fun to explore, the tasks and things to do are simple but fun, and the minigames, while not super deep, are fun for kids to play. Not to mention, the game has a lot of personality and style to it that perfectly reflect the movie and tv-series, and it also helps it stand out. I still chuckle a little whenever I tease the mailman. It's silly, but it's silly in a good way. Honestly, the licensing is really unfortunate, because I know it'll turn some people away from the game. I, as a gullible kid, bought it because of the licensing however, and I'm so glad that I did. It's definitely not a game to hunt down for yourself, but if you're looking for a game to introduce your kid into the world of open-world mission based gaming, with some amusing minigames and characters to boot, then this game is a certain recommendation. And don't worry, almost no prior knowledge of the license is required to enjoy the game. The only advantage you'll get is that you'll recognise the characters and locations. It's an advantage, but not a requirement.

2. Excite Truck

I don't know how popular this title was when it came out, but I never hear people talk about it, so I think it quickly fell into obscurity. That's a shame though, since it's one of the better racing games on the Wii. As a spin-off to the Excitebike series, this game was clearly meant as a way to show off the capabilities of the WiiMote. It, however, does it really well. The off-road racing feels just right; the turning can be somewhat slippery, but just enough so that it doesn't become frustrating and feels fitting with the style of the game. I also like the varied vehicles with clearly different stats, which really change the way you play and make for a good fit for any player. For example, I prefer cars with more control, while my brother is willing to sacrifice that for more pure speed. I know this seems like standard stuff, but this game pushes the boundaries of what you can do with these stats, and it does it really well. The stages are clever and somewhat varied too, and trying to score extra points by landing right and making awesome boost jumps is a fun extra challenge. I won't deny that the game gets repetitive after playing a little while, but if you have friends around, I highly recommend it.

1. Go Vacation

I believe this game was a moderate success, but again, I never hear people talk about it. And that's really too bad, because Go Vacation is a great game. Go Vacation can be classified in the same category as Barnyard; a family friendly introduction to open-world mission based gaming. However, Go Vacation sacrifices some of Barnyard's personality and variety for HUGE amounts of content. There are four resorts to explore, each with a distinct theme, vehicles, and minigames to find throughout it. The minigames aren't anything special, but they're fun time-wasters. What make this great to me, however, are the resorts. I spent hours just going around these resorts with my little brother, driving along the beach on ATV's, riding horses through the mountains, or skiïng down a mountain. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about these overworlds that just makes them so fun to ride through. It's like the title screen to Scribblenauts; you can spend hours on it and not get bored. I'll admit, it does bore me now, partially because I've grown up, and partially because I now know these resorts like the back of my hand. However, it's still fun to play when someone who isn't as familiar with the game joins in. I highly recommend it, especially if you've got kids around to play it with.

Now, none of these are truly outstanding titles, and I don't think any of them would make a top 10 best Wii games (except maybe Go Vacation as number 10), but they're still really good Wii titles that too many people seem to have overlooked. If you ever see them going cheaply, don't hestitate to pick any of them up, they're really worth it.

Classic Video Games / Re: What does your collection specalise in?
« on: March 11, 2016, 04:41:30 pm »
When it comes to the games, it's mainly just games that I'm interested in, combined with some games I got as gifts. No real pattern there. I have thought about collecting either Wii or DS games seriously, but I haven't gone through with that thus far (mainly for financial reasons).
As for merch, I started out with general Nintendo stuff as a hobby, then I went to dedicated Pokémon items, but now I've branched back out to general Nintendo items.

I dissasembled it partially. after taking out the power supply I chickened out, since I was confused about the wiring attached to the blu-ray player and I was too afraid of breaking it. I did clean everything using compressed air up until there, and I also blew the fan with the air through the gaps that I had cleared out to reach it. After putting it back together I played some Bayonetta (the final (and probably hardest to run) level, and the fan didn't even go up to its highest level.
However, then my little brother started playing GTA V. I wasn't in the room, but he claimed it kept shutting down after 5 minutes of playtime. Now he took the PS3 out of the cabinet it was standing in and he claims that the fan output on the back now feels cold and that all the problems are solved. I didn't feel like the fan was short on room to release heat in that cabinet, but who knows. I guess we now just have to take it out of the cabinet whenever we play GTA V, since Bayonetta runned fine (and other than those two games and occasionally Tomb Raider or The Sims we never play on it anyway). If it goes wrong again maybe I'll open it up again, but at least it seems to be fixed for now. Thanks for all your help and ideas though!  :)

Thanks for posting it! I'm glad he fixed it, but it looks like he has a lot of experience with repairs like this. I don't, I never did anything worse than screwing the bottom case of my laptop, and I'm not planning to start now because I'm too scared I'll accidentally brick the console. I guess I should try and see whether I can get it checked out somewhere in my area. I will look into that post though, maybe there's something in there I can try.

I own a fat model PS3 - the kind without backwards compatibility. It was a gift from my cousin who never used it. Part of the reason for that is that the fan could get very loud, to the point of being louder than the tv. I quickly noticed this happening when the game that was being played got heavy to run. With games like SingStar it's fine most of the time, but during boss battles in Bayonetta or at any point when playing GTA V it could go crazy and make an insane amount of noise.

I've been wanting to get a can of compressed air and clean the system for a while now, but so far I haven't done that yet. However, some problems have started occuring a few days ago with the system. My brother was playing GTA V when the console just shut itself off. When rebooted it would give a message that save data may be damaged. It would scan for errors and fix them if they were found, which could take up to 2 or 3 hours according to the message. It was done in 5 minutes. In the last few days, this has happened multiple times, and when rebooted it would either give the save data message or it would say the system overheated.

I have never had this problem before. It started two days ago, and has been going on ever since. You can play for a little while, and then it stops. The only game tested so far is GTA V, but I'm planning on playing some Bayonetta tomorrow. I'll update this message if it crashes on that too.

I'm pretty sure the fan is broken due to all the noise it makes. I'm going to get myself some compressed air and attempt to clean the console with it as soon as possible (I'll blow into the fan from the outside, but I'm not sure I'm actually going to open it up as of now, since I have no experience with that and I don't want to wreck it). Has anyone ever had this problem before? Should I get the fan replaced? I'll update this message when I get more info.

Don't mention it. Collecting can be a hard hobby, and I just wanted to help a fellow collector out. Besides, I already was able to message him, so why not just try to take care of everything at once? Only makes it easier for all three of us. I just hope the seller'll respond soon. As soon as he does, I'll let you know.  :)

I live in the Netherlands. I'll contact the seller and I'll send you a personal message with the results. I think it would be handy to know a few things from you though, namely:
How much are you willing to pay for the shirt (excluding shipping and taxes)?
In what ways are you able to pay (PayPal, credit card, etc.)?

The seller is from Limburg, which is in the Netherlands. Here, we do most of our payments via something called iDeal, which is only available to people who are with a Dutch bank. There's a good chance he wants to be paid via that. I have PayPal though. If the seller only accepts iDeal, I could make the payment for you if you want. I know this may seem suspicious, but PayPal has 180 days of insurance, so you can get your money back if I were to scam you. But I'm not, I just want to help you out. I'll contact him first and I'll message you when I get a response. In the meanwhile, could you send me the answers to these questions?

EDIT: OK, this site is very restrictive, it's blocking my postal code for some reason. I'll just register with a fake code and I'll contact the seller for you.

ANOTHER EDIT: Huh, turns out registering isn't even necessary. I'll send him a message now. I'll message you when I get a response!

YET ANOTHER EDIT: I just send him a message. I intended to include a link to the forum, but I forgot. Oh well, I'll send him a link later. Here's a copy the site send me of the mail I send the seller:

Here's a translation:

Dear Jundland,

I'm active on a forum for gaming collectors. One member there has shown interest in your Forbidden Siren t-shirt. Unfortunately, he can't send you a message because he lives in the US and 2dehands.be blocks his computer. He asked on the forum for someone from the Netherlands or Belgium to send you a message on his behalf. This is why I'm e-mailing you. I have a few questions regarding your shirt on behalf of this user.

Firstly he's wondering whether the shirt is still available. The ad is over a year old, so he wanted to be sure it's still for sale.
Secondly, he's wants to know whether you'd be willing to ship the shirt to the US. Of course extra shipping costs and import costs are his own responsibility. I have asked him what he's willing to bid on the shirt itself. I have yet to receive a reaction from him, but I assume he's willing to pay the given price of €15,-.
Lastly I'm wondering how you'd like to be paid. I understand that iDeal is the most common method of online payment in the Netherlands, but this man, as a citizen of the US, naturally doesn't have access to that. This is why I'm wondering whether you'd be able to accept payment via PayPal or credit card. If not, then I proposed to the user to pay for him, since I have access to both PayPal and iDeal. I haven't gotten a response to this either.
I promised the user on the forum to send any responses from you to him. Of course I'll then send his responses back to you. Thank you in advance for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Tyler

If there's anything you'd like to add, or if there's something I wrote that isn't right and you want to correct me, please do send me a message, and I'll send him another e-mail. I'll send you the response as soon as I get it in a private message.
Now that I think about it, I could've done this in a private message too...oh well  ::)

ONE FINAL EDIT: Oh dear, I just saw on your profile you're female, and I referred to you as male in my e-mail to the seller...my bad, I'll take note of that. I hope you don't mind  :(
