Title: Xbox or Gamecube
Post by: Jakandsig on March 14, 2015, 01:49:52 pm
These are two underrated consoles bringing tons of great games (the former explaining the console gaming audience) and both for better or worse, changed the source of the companies behind them.

But which was better?

Both are great and have good exclusives. Morrowind are Metroid Prime are both two of the best games to come out of that generation.

Not by a huge margin, but I prefer the original XBOX.

I would choose Gamecube on this because the Wave Bird controller was the best Nintendo controller I've ever played with.  Using the GBA for games such as The Legend Of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures & Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was a fun and innovative way to play.  Plus, the Game Boy Player allows me to play my GBA games, especially the Golden Sun series, on TV.

As for the Xbox, I never enjoyed both controllers, the original bulky model and the compact version that came later.  As for games that interested me, they were available either on PC or multi-platform.

Tough to say.  I know there were some good games on the Gamecube, but I never owned one and Xbox did great for Halo as I had so many LAN parties with Halo and Halo 2.  Got to the point that I was working with my small local gaming community to set up public LAN parties.  Probably hundreds of hours on both games.  There were a few other good exclusives too I'm sure, I just don't remember them as much anymore.  Kinda in comparison, I can think of more good exclusives on the Gamecube like Wind Waker, Resident Evil 4 (Till it went to the PS2), Animal Crossing, Super Mario Sunshine (A game I didn't appreciate till later on), and a few others I didn't play, but are well liked, and it was already pointed out with things like the game boy player which allowed people to play handheld games on the TV which is a nice feature.  Wave Bird was also a fantastic controller, though the Xbox S Controller fixed a lot of issues the Xbox had lol

Gotta go with Xbox. Even though I like the aesthetics of the GameCube better, I've never really been a fan of Nintendo's game library.

I'd say Gamecube probably because of the stuff with it. I know that Xbox has better multiplats in most cases and a better sound system and the hard drive. However, I feel like the Gamecube has a bit of a more diverse library of exclusive games compared to the xbox, and with optimal accessories like the gamecube, it can double as the perfect way to play all Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on your TV in 480p( or 480i w/o component), which I feel is something that can't be overlooked given the amount of titles available. I also really like the controller for the Gamecube over the Xbox controller layout, and most of the multiplats I've found for gamecube are mostly good so far. Online support for gamecube is pretty bad compared to the xbox, but there are ways to still play a few games like Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1+II online thanks to private servers. The graphics are pretty good for a 1999 chipset design and its got very fast loading times compared to xbox(+ps2)due to the mini-dvd discs( limited data is a downer) and design.

So I'd think I've give Gamecube a slight edge over the Xbox, and I enjoy picking up stuff for both( even if most of the xbox titles I find in the wild are usually sports games).

If you happened to have a Wii and an Xbox 360, I've looked up the backwards compatibility of the 360 before, and it looks like it has quite a lot of issues with a whole heap of games.  An original Xbox might be a more worthwhile investment.

On the other hand, I'm not aware of too many Wii backward compatibility issues, no Game Boy Player I suppose

I'm definitely on the Gamecube side, there's a reason why I don't own any Xbox system at all haha. The exclusives appeal to me a LOT more, and for me the gamecube controller is the best controller to have blessed earth.

An original Xbox is pretty cheap too.  I regularly find them for 25 bucks and less at thrift shops.  I'd probably have an extra one or two for the heck of it if I had more money to blow on these things lol

I personally own neither of these consoles, I have a Wii which I take advantage of the backwards compatibility, I was thinking of getting some original Xbox games for my 360, but then I found out about what I mentioned previously (and now I've sold my Xbox 360).

It looks like the majority here are swaying towards Xbox, but in the end, it comes down to what exclusives appeal to you.  Surely you should be able to find a list of exclusives available on each platform.

Looking at my game library it would seem I prefered the Xbox.

That said, it would be unnacceptable for me to not own both.

Hold the z button while you turn on your gamecube.  End of story.  Xbox can suck it.

I would say Gamecube too, they both share a lot of multi-platform games as well as the PlayStation 2, so if you already have a PS2, you can probably set aside the multi-platforms for now.  A lot of great Exclusives on the gamecube from franchises which either had some great one-hit wonders and a cult following, or they're still running strong today.

On the other hand, a lot of the Xbox exclusives never really amounted to anything, some for good reason.

So officially I'll say Gamecube, but in my circumstance, an Xbox would be more practical, there are still a 'few' exclusives that interest me, namely 'Jet Set Radio Future'.

I'm not really big on either system but I would lean to the Gamecube. The primary reason I own one at all is for the gameboy player, although there are some great racing games on the system. Not a fan of Nintendo's 1st party IP's so that doesn't factor into it for me.

Depends on what you are looking for really.

The Xbox console advantages were the built-in HDD, online gaming, custom soundtracks and best-in-class graphics.

The Gamecube console advantages were the GameBoy Advance Player and Wavebird controller.  It was also no slouch in graphics.

The Xbox had quite a few solid exclusives.  Halo, Dead or Alive, Forza, Project Gotham Racing, Voodoo Vince and the Otogi games were standouts for me.

The Gamecube had a solid lineup of exclusives.  Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Luigi's Mansion, Starfox, etc.  And who can forget the unforgettable Rouge Leader?  You got to make the mother-F'in Deathstar trench run!

I own and/or have owned both.  It's hard for me to pick a favorite because both were so different and unique.  If I had to pick the one I played the most, it would be the Xbox.  I cannot tell you how many hours I dumped into Halo and Project Gotham Racing on that console.  On the same token, I had more frustration with Xbox than the Gamecube.  While my Gamecube ran flawlessly every single time I used it, I went through several Xbox units because of HDD errors, dirty disc errors, etc.  I had bad luck with Xbox hardware and atrocious luck with 360 hardware.  Hence, why I won't buy an Xbox One.

I prefer the controller and small form factor of the GameCube, but the Xbox had more worthwhile games overall, particularly for Sega fans. I wasn't particularly crazy about either of them, though - not enough worthwhile exclusives, and as much as I disliked the XB's bulk, I also disliked the plastic toy feel of the GC controller.

Honestly, for exclusive games both systems are pretty close, but I think the genres you enjoy will probably be the tipping point in which console exclusives you prefer over the other. In my opinion, many of the exclusives on the Gamecube are worth buying the system for, it has a good variety in games with a few genres being pretty underrepresented, and even for some of the games that were initially exclusive to gamecube but got ports to either ps2/xbox, the gamecube versions ran much better than the ported versions( part of it is to really sloppy work by Sega of America). It's my fav system, and I prefer its exclusives to the exclusives on the  original Xbox by a small margin.

I grew up with a PS2 but if I had to choose I would pick Gamecube! The Xbox had some great exclusives such as Morrowind, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and of course Halo. But the Gamecube had way too many amazing exclusive characters packed into their games. Freaking Mario Party, Sunshine, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime, Zelda four swords, twilight Princess, Windwaker, Luigis Mansion, Mario kart, Star Fox Assault, and the list goes on. The PS2 had some exclusive characters as well like sly, ratchet and clank, and Jak & Daxter. But I really Don't remember any from the X-box besides master Chief, and Blinx.

I'm going with the lovable little purple lunchbox.  Gamecube is the winner  All the first party stuff and Rogue Squadron

Xbox comes close because it has 2 of my favorite games of all time on it.  Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is fantastic.  I don't think there will be another game like it.

Oh the Gamecube for me too, holy crap that fantastic controller. Arguably some of the best "new" Nintendo games aside from Super Mario Sunshine. It also birthed some new franchises for Nintendo as well, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Metroid Prime and Animal Crossing at least here in the states. Not to mention the first good Wireless controller. I absolutely love the gamecube and still play it regularly via the wii component out.
I will say though the Xbox is neat because of Sega's influence Panzer Dragoon and GunValkyrie as well as Crazy Taxi 3

It is a good time to pick up old Xbox games.  I was browsing through them at V-Stock and most are around $6.99.

Well this may not be the best idea since there are hundreds of games on Xbox and other systems not on gamecube than the other way around. I mean if you remove the PS2, the Xbox list using your formula would be massive to the point of it being unfair. If you only use PC though it could work.

My vote is for the GameCube where I have to admit that I did purchase this console for the Resident Evil 0 and then the rest of the titles came by themselves, have no complains about the Xbox in fact I do have two games for this one but not the console, the catalog of titles never made me acquire one and at this point definitely is not at my wish list, at least not at this moment.

Well I have only experience with the Gamecube seeing as I never owned an Xbox. But the gamecube is such a good console. Skies of Arcadia and Paper Mario alone leave a very big place in my heart seeing as they are both incredible titles. I have yet to know anyone IRL that has played SoA and loved it as much as me :c.

Xbox. and Gamecube,

Morrowind made me buy the console cause i couldnt afford PC to play it.  but it also had alot of awesome exclusives.  I did buy all Gamecubes i wanted later on and play them on my Wii now.

But Xbox had some very unique exclusive games.

1) Morrowind
2) Phantom Dust
3) Yager
4) Breakdown
5) Kingdom Under Fire series
6) Panzer Dragoon
7) Halo Series (Halo 2 i played the most in college)
8) Conker
9) Crimson Sea
10) Old Knight Republic Series
11) Jade Empire

That just to name few.  Very different very Exclusive Games,  You couldnt find anywere else.

Gamecube did have also game as well

1) Paper Mario
2) Twilight princess Zelda and Windwaker
3) Mario Kart
4) Lost Kingdoms
5) Fire Emblem
6) Luigi's Mansion
7) Tales of Symphonia
8) Baten Kaitos series
9) Eternal Darkness
10) Pikmin
11) Skies of Arcadia

Both Great Console but both different depending on style or preference of games.  But i got to say Xbox is my choice.  Because Gamecube was lacking of games.  On Gamecube total is maybe 25-30 games i wanted.  On Xbox it became 50-100.  Their was far less good of selections other than the games i listed for Gamecube.

I prefer the Gamecube over the XBOX simply because I am a Nintendo fanboy  ;)

On a serious note... I like the Gamecube because of its comfortable controller and compact design. I think it's the best looking console ever released: it has a cube-shaped body, top-loading CD drive, a built-in carrying handle, and an expansion port for the GBA adapter that lines up with the console perfectly. Although its games are mostly exclusives and few in number, they are really fun to play.

The XBOX has a superior hardware, but I got turned off by its suitcase design and bulky controller. And it does not have any exclusives that I am interested in (except for Panzer Dragoon Orta and Ninja Gaiden Black).

It actually surprises me a bit that XBOX collecting has not taken off like the other three Gen 6 consoles. I finished getting every game for the XBOX in less than a year of deciding I'd be collecting for it. Even expensive stuff like Operation Genesis, Conker, and Morrowind GOTY I found for under $3. I do think people have become more aware of the value of some of these games, but still, I run into them for dirt cheap from time to time. So yeah, if you have any interest at all in the original XBOX now would definitely be the time to jump in a start collecting because I cannot see prices staying this low on a console hat many remember fondly (aka a system that thousands are bound to get nostalgic for in the near future and start rapidly collecting for).

Wow.  I don't think I've ever heard someone say that.
I'm not doubting you.  It's just a unique opinion.

I must say most good XBox games have aged incredibly well.

If your not playing with the HD kit and optical audio out you have no idea what you are missing.

Burnout
Dead or Alive
Simpsons Hit n Run
Ninja Gaiden

Look and sound incredible for their time.

During that generation, it was my console of choice after the Dreamcast officially died. Best ports of games, and a very strong and underrated group of console exclusives (I'm simply not a PC Gamer, so the PC ports are meaningless to me).

I even used it as my personal music player for a while thanks to the hard-drive.

Went ahead and adjusted your comment for you. You`re welcome.

^ Morrowind was the reason I decided to buy an XBox. No other game that generation compared to the size and scope of that game.

But I think the following game in the series, Oblivion, is the greatest game of all time.

Better? No intention of trying to answer that. Which I preferred? Probably the Xbox, though both are superb machines (along with the PS2 and its vast library of exclusives and the GBA and its sublime 2D goodness).

The Gamecube's main strengths to me are its first-party games and it's Japanese-leaning exclusives. The Xbox, on the other hand, was weak in J-flavoured games but still had Sega's "Dreamcast 2" range and interesting exclusives like Voodoo Vince, as well as a large clutch of games which didn't reach the Cube.

That era was definitely one I'll be revisiting for years to come, 3D gaming finally became not-crap and at least the GBA kept 2D alive.

I got it when I was 11 years old, so for me it is. It's all perspective, people in their 30's typically say NES or SNES. kid's today will probably say PS4, Wii U, or XBOX one in 15 years.

I prefer the Xbox because of the quantity of games available. If you don't count multi-platforms titles Gamecube probably have less than 20 decent games. (Mario Sunshine, Star Fox Assault, Twillight Princess, Wind Waker, Picmin 1 and 2, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bross, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero, Mario Golf and FF:CC). Those are really good games and many of them are better than any game on Xbox. Damn! Some of them are better than any game ever release till today. But other exclusives are not really good or only "ok" games (Luigi Mansion, 1080, Wave Race or Star Fox Adventures for exemple), not good enough to justify to buy a console.

Xbox was an awesome console with many many good games and a lot of exclusive titles : Arx Fatalis, Morrowind, JSRF, Amped 1 and 2, Rallisport Challenge 1 and 2, Fable, Forza, Halo 1 & 2, Jade Empire, Mech Assault 1 & 2, Ninja Gaiden, PGR 1 & 2 and many more). I don't know if you played Rallisport Challenge recently but theses 2 games are graphically OUTSTANDING even with today standards.

More importantly, for me anyway, Xbox has Xbox Live. At that time the one and only decent online gaming platform on a console. Let be honest, PS2 online service sucked. And Gamecube, aside of Phantasy Star, don't have any online titles.

I can't count how many hours I pass online on my Xbox playing Unreal Championship, Mech Assault and Return To Castle Wolfenstein chatting with my teammates. I still have many of the "friends" I made at that time in my Xbox One friendlist.

The original Xbox was the first console I bought by myself. Coming from the PC world, Xbox Live was a huge advantage in favor of the Xbox when came the time to choose a system. Next November, when the renewal will pass on my credit card, I will be a Xbox Live subscriber for 14 years, uninterrupted! So for sure Xbox has been a more significant console in my life than the Gamecube or any other Nintendo system to be honest (I was in the Genesis/Megadrive team)

So at your question my answer is : Xbox

;P

I'm going with the 'Cube. I love that it has a handle and that its discs are bite sized. I'm sure that there are some Xbox games out there that would be fun, but I would much rather go with the ones that are more fun on the Game Cube such as:

Tales of Symphonia
Baiten Kaitos
Skies of Arcadia
Melee
Eternal Darkness

There are more, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind when I hear the words "game" and "cube" next to one another. It's an underrated system.

I don't really care for its controller, but that's another story. At least it fits in your hands unlike the Xbox's whopper sized controller.

To be fair, I hated the Xbox "Duke" controller but loved the "S" controller.  And in the era of wired controllers being standard, the Xbox controllers had the longest cords on the market and the cool "break away" feature so you didn't pull a two-ton console off the shelf.

I'm not even familiar with the S controller. Was that a smaller version of the original controller?

And gamecube had the shortest cords on the market for sure! Probably in the purpose of selling wavebird controller.

Yeah...they were pretty short.  I think only Dreamcast came with shorter cables.  I was never a big fan of the Gamecube controller.  I didn't like the giant "A" button and the bean-shaped "X" and "Y" buttons.  The shoulder buttons also never felt comfortable to me and  the C-stick was annoying as my thumb slipped off it like it was coated in baby oil.  The D-pad was tiny, the Z-trigger was wonky....I just didn't like much of anything about it.  At least I can say it was more comfortable to hold than the N64 controller.

The Dreamcast cord has nothing the TurboGrafx-16 cord. You have to like sit right in front of your T.V. with the stock controllers on TG-16.

Odyssey2.  The cord comes from the back like the Atari 2600, except the cords are "hardwired" and the cords are extremely short.  I wanna say Intellivision also had extremely short cords.

I wanna say I don't recall Dreamcast or Gamecube cords being particularly short, but I did buy extension cords for both.  I remember N64 having short cords and winding up tugging the system, but I don't know.

I remember thinking the GCN controller was so weird, but then when you think about it, the N64 controller is much more weird.

Agreed about the Gamecube and N64 controllers.  For me, the N64 controllers were actually painful to use as the left "handle" dug into the back of my hand when trying to use the analog stick.  I never understood the design of that thing and compared to the PlayStation controller, it was bad all around.

They share a lot of 3rd party games. So I will judge them strictly off design and 1st party exclusives. Both of which I have to give to GameCube. Game Cube has one of the best controllers I have ever felt to this day and so many powerhouse 1st party titles. Some of my top ten favorites all time. Xbox doesn't have one of my top ten list games although Halo 2 and Stubbs the Zombie come close. On 3rd party cross platform games I prefer PS2 to both. PS2 is my favorite of the Gen then Cube then Xbox. All were great in their own way though.

I didn't get to play either until 2004; I'd been strictly PS2. The first of the two I played was the Xbox; my step brother had one but he didn't have much in terms of games.... GTA Trilogy, Conflict: Vietnam, WWF Raw and one other game which I can't recall. Obviously WWF Raw was the only exclusive; I was a wrestling fan but that game was quite disappointing. I could see the graphics improvement over my PS2 but without experiencing any notable exclusives, it didn't really take my interest.

A few months later my friend returned from a trip to visit friends in England and he brought back with him an Xbox with Halo: Combat Evolved, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Rainbow Six 3 and a racing game which I can't recall. He'd played it at a friends and gotten hooked on Halo; soon I was also hooked. We played the campaign on multiple difficulties and we'd spend hours having sniper duels on 'Blood Gulch'. Honestly at first we didn't really play much else on it; I remember trying Morrowind but we weren't used to western RPGs so it seemed odd. He then picked up Fable when it came out; great game, probably one of the first western RPGs I got into. I then remember when he picked up Halo 2; I actually left an exam early to go to his house and play it; then we pulled an all nighter and finished it  ;D

Xmas 2004 I decided I wanted a new console; at first I considered getting an Xbox with Halo, Halo 2 and Fable. However for some reason i started to gravitate towards the Gamecube, which was odd really, I hadn't owned a Nintendo console since the SNES. And although I'd enjoyed a handful of N64 titles, it wasn't a console I'd really connected with. Nonetheless I picked up a Gamecube with Mario Kart Double Dash, Pikmin, Pikmin 2, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Mega Collection and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Later I added Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Super Mario Sunshine and Sonic Adventure 2. Mario Kart Double Dash dominated the vast majority of my playing time for a long time; and I was scarily good as a result :D.

Technically I never owned an Xbox but I did own a 360 later so could buy Xbox titles for that. So obviously I have been able to collect for both consoles since.

Xbox:
Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo 2
Fable
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Jade Empire
Deus Ex: Invisible War

Gamecube:
Mario Kart Double Dash
Super Smash Bros Melee
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike
Pikmin
Pikmin 2
Super Mario Sunshine

They'd be the must own titles for each system in my mind; however just because Gamecube has more, i wouldn't say it's necessarily better. So to be honest, my short answer is they're even, both worthy runners up to the dominant PS2 :D

i'd take the gamecube! the exclusives (ranging from colorful playformers to dark rated M shooters and horror and everything in between), the flagship characters, we've already talked about all of those... but there were also so many neat accessories for that thing! I carry mine around in this little GameCube flight case looking thing with a screen attatched to the top of it. and of course the wonder gameboy player.. using GBA's as second screens.. very unique. Nintendo always has a weird approach and I feel like GC was brilliant.

oh, and tiny disks? yes!
