Hardware and Tech / What is this Dreamcast memory card?
« on: February 06, 2021, 10:02:08 pm »
I have a completely unbranded Dreamcast memory card. I searched through the existing entries and couldn't find anything that seemed to match, so I created an entry that can be seen below.

There are no markings on the outside of the case. Onthe PCB, the text DC-01A and VER A is visible. Additionally, the number 289 is printed next to a symbol that resembles the letter S, though this may be a serial number.

Video Game Database Discussion / Sega Game Gear Cartridge Cases
« on: February 04, 2021, 02:39:10 pm »
There are at least two designs for the Sega Game Gear cartridge cases, one that is 'Made is USA', which has an item number of 253-6386. The other is made in Taiwan and doesn't seem to have a visible item number. Each has a slightly different logo and design.

The is already an entry for one of them, but the photo is not very clear and I can't tell which it is.

How should I handle this to prevent duplicates or item conversions?

I've noticed that several entries have artifacts from Unicode encoding issues (e.g. â„¢ instead of ) which affects certain symbols and all non-Latin language entries. I figure that there may have been some kind of transition at some point, as newer entries don't seem to have the issue.

Honestly, the main reason I'm asking about this is just simple curiosity, but I also would like to know if I should take any special care when using Unicode characters, or if the issue has been entirely corrected.

I've also noticed that non-ASCII characters just show up as question marks (?) on the Notifications page, though that doesn't really affect anything important (as far as I am aware).

When a user is inputting text into the Notes or cost TextBox and presses Enter, the modal will close without adding the game to the user's collection. There are no additional dialogs or warnings when this happens, which can make it easy for a user to mistakenly believe that they have added an item to their collection unless they know to double-check.

Below is what I've tested:
Platform: Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.1902)
Browsers:
  • Mozilla Firefox 85.0 (64-bit)
  • Google Chrome 88.0.4324.104 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  • Internet Explorer 11.1845.17134.0
  • Microsoft Edge 88.0.705.56 (Official build) (64-bit)

The item number for the Nintendo Selects edition of Super Mario Galaxy is listed as  RVL-RMG1-USZ. Based on its formatting, it would be the disc ID if it is correct. None of the serial numbers on my copy quite match it, so I would like to verify if my copy is original or piecemeal, and if it is original, whether it is a separate release to the existing entry, or if the existing entry is incorrect. I should also note that my disc artwork does not have a reflective background, which from what I could find is typical for a NS release.

Nintendo ID on rear of box: RVL P RMG1 USZ
Artwork ID? on rear of box: 75194A
Disc ID: RVL-RMGE-USA-B0
Booklet ID: 64299C

There is some ambiguity in the Style Guide regarding this as front box text is not explicitly mentioned in the bulleted list at the top of the section:
Box Text
Valid areas for box text:
- box back
- image captions
- bullet lists
- label text

However, further down the post shows an example of an entry that includes front text:
front box text
Transformers: Devastation (reviews) on PS4 has a release where there is a red block on the front with review text. This entry has the text from the front put into box text.

I would just like to clarify if front text should be included on entries going forward.

My US copy of LittleBIGPlanet 2 Special Edition has a spine item number of BCUS-98372 and a disc item number of BCUS-90260. I tried to research online if this is correct, however I was unable to find any conclusive results. I figure the easiest way to verify would be to ask if this is the same in anyone else's copies.

Site Feedback / BUG REPORT: Game Not Adding
« on: July 13, 2020, 01:26:31 am »
Disregard the majority of this message. It was a mistake on my part. I was looking under 'S' for Shark Tale instead of 'D' for Dreamworks.

I've been having intermittent issues with some games not actually getting added to my collection after I submit them; I'll have to go through my list again to verify that all my games were added once I finish adding my collection. However, every time I've noticed that a game didn't get added, I was able to resubmit the addition, and it added without issue on the second attempt.

The specific issue I'm having right now is that Shark Tale for PS2 (https://vgcollect.com/item/1833) won't add to my collection, even after repeated attempts on multiple browsers. I also attempted making different and no selection for the 'Other Details' checkboxes with no change in behaviour.

Platform: Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134
Primary Browser: Firefox 78.0.2 (64-bit)
Secondary Browser: Google Chrome 83.0.4103.116 (Official Build) (64-bit)

EDIT: I just looked at the 'Collections' page for the game, and it shows that it's in my collection several times. But it doesn't show up on my Collection page.

Currently, the number of items loaded per page is 25. This results in a single item being isolated on the last row, which causes it to appear as if it is the last item in that collection. Setting the pagination limit to 24 or 28 when the user has shelf view enabled would correct this issue.

I'm primarily referring to games which are sold in individual boxes packaged together as a single set. One such example is the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, which includes three games in normal boxes; the only apparent difference is that the back of each box states that it is part of a set and not for individual resale. These games are often broken apart and sold as individuals regardless, which can lead to collections with on one or two of the titles, but not the whole set. We already have a slight precedent for this: if I'm not mistaken, the Not For Resale version of Guitar Hero III (https://vgcollect.com/item/156529) is the version included with the wireless guitar controller package.

EDIT: I found another precedent while adding more games: Hitman Blood Money (https://vgcollect.com/item/165044) from the Hitman Trilogy bundle.

I had some questions about how we should format the title of the Pokémon Stadium games.

First, for all of these games, there is some redundant titling. They are all titled in the format of
  • POCKET MONSTERS' STADIUM ポケモンスタジアム
which when transcribed would appear as
  • POCKET MONSTERS' STADIUM Pokemon Stadium

In situations like this where a version of the title is printed in both English and Japanese, should we include both, or prefer one over the other?

Additionally, on the final Pokémon Stadium, the phrase 「クリスタルバージョン対応」【Crystal Version supported】is display prominently below the title, to the point where I've seen it included as part of the title in several places, including in the current version of this database's entry. On Nintendo's page for the game (which is still live), it only mentions the title as 'Pokemon Stadium Kin Gin', omitting the Crystal part. My question for this is should we include 'Crystal support' as part of the title, or just consider it as non-title text, in the same vein as the text that states '1-4 Players'?

Games in question:
Pocket Monsters' Stadium
Pocket Monsters' Stadium (w/ GB Pack)
Pocket Monsters' Stadium 2
Pocket Monsters' Stadium Kin Gin

Note: I have read the Naming Japanese Games post, and based on that redundant titles would be included in their entirety, but I wanted to ensure that is what is preferred, as redundant titles weren't explicitly mentioned.

The North American version of Pokémon Yellow supported an expanded pallet when played on a Game Boy Color, in addition to its Super Game Boy pallets. As far as I can tell, this is effectively the same as the numerous Game Boy Color games that were backwards compatible with older models. At the moment, Pokémon Yellow is classified as a Game Boy game in the database, but I was wondering if there was any reason it shouldn't be classified as a Game Boy Color game.

I transcribed the the back of the Famicom Tetris box (https://vgcollect.com/item/25475) before thoroughly reading the style guide (my bad; I've read it now and will be sure to adhere to its standards). When I did the transcription I included the copyright and address text in addition to the synopsis. My question is: is this too much? Going by the exact wording on the style guide, it would seem to be, but I wanted to ask as I wasn't sure if this additional text was considered when the guide was made.

Below is the relevant excerpt from the style guide:
Quote
Descriptions and Box Text:
  • The Box Text is the synopses that is on the back of the game packaging. This should be written into this field, and no other notes, or descriptions.
