Title: What are your favorite hidden gems in your collection?
Post by: gngtiger on February 03, 2022, 07:31:32 pm
I really enjoyed Cars: The Video Game for the Nintendo Wii for what it was. It's not amazing if you're not into the franchise, but I'd recommend it highly, regardless.

Terranigma is a game very few have heard of, yet it's one of the best Action RPGs on the SNES. The music in this game is incredible, as is the story and gameplay. Since the PAL version is unoptimized (and the only official English version), I went with an NTSC repro cart after my first playthrough on emulator.

Hybrid Heaven, Contra Shattered Soldier, Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights, Frogger Beyond, Evolution Snowboarding, Bouken Jidai Katsugeki Goemon, Frogger 3D and much more.

They were and are still some of the games I am the most fascinated about and the ones that made me feel again that I was truly enjoying games without a but like have been way too often nowadays.

It also helped I still think they do a good job feeling fairly unique unique even with hundreds of games being released monthly.

unoptimized means that a pal copy would run perfectly in 60HZ.

The games that you have to look out for are when they are pal optimized. That is where you have issues when you force them to 60HZ in wich you get glitches or that the game runs to fast because they where optimized with 50hz in mind.

The Dk country or them mario games are some examples of this.

The term "hidden gem" has always rubbed me the wrong way, even before Metal Jesus drove it into the ground. I just find that 95% of the time when people mention hidden gems it's either games that are fairly well known and/or aren't that great. I get that it's fun to pretend there's some game barely anyone has ever heard of that's somehow just as good as some of the best games out there, but from my experience these games are typically mediocre at best and borderline shit at the worst of times. Having played quite a few of these hidden gems I've experienced very few exceptions to this, and honestly I just recommend people play the non-hidden actual gems out there like your Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, or God of War type games.

Sorry, just had to rant there, but the closest examples of hidden gems I can think of are he following:

Myth: The Fallen Lords (PC)
Armed Police Batrider (Arcade)
Nightslashers (Arcade)

I used to always say the King's Field games, but those a bit more known now due to it's influence on Demon's/Dark Souls.

N64: Flying Dragon - An interesting game that was actually 2 fighting games in one. You had a standard mode which played very similar to Virtua Fighter or Dead or Alive, but it also has an SD mode, where besides everything being more cartoony, had RPG elements and character customization.
GCN: Freedom Fighters - A squad-based 3rd person shooter taking place in an America under Soviet invasion.
GCN: Second Sight -  An action game focused around psychic powers combined with an interesting story. If you liked chucking people around with the force in Star Wars games, you'll like the combat in this one.
GBA: Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars - A turn-based squad-focused strategy game with the twist being that rather than relying on hit percentages, you needed to manually aim at moving targets to hit weak points fast enough.
DS: Lego Battles - Imagine a Lego-themed version of Warcraft 2. While nowhere near as complex, it can scratch that RTS itch pretty well.
360: Adventure Time Secret of the Nameless Kingdom - A solid 2D-Zelda-esque adventure featuring Adventure Time characters
360: Eat Lead The Return of Matt Hazard - A funny little action game that pokes fun at my of the long-standing tropes in games
Xbox One: Regalia Of Men and Monarchs - A humorous tactics/city management game. One thing I enjoyed was the subverted tropes regarding fantasy races, where here you have things like elves being viking raiders and dwarves being samurai gunmen.
Xbox One: Unpacking - A recent release and the least "Hidden" gem in the list, but the game is pure Zen, simply organizing and tidying up a house.

I mean plenty of the good hidden gems aren't that hidden anymore when them years have gone by it happens

Hidden gems of today being trash is going to be at a higher ratio because more of the good stuff is already known nowadays and thus not a hidden gem anymore. There are not going to be a ton of amazing gems left when most stones get turned over. There are plenty of hidden gems that where excellent that are sought after and not so hidden today.

The 2nd fact I have rarely heard, I have seen very few people that would claim that a hidden gem would surpass some of the best games on the system that rarely happens, plus a hidden gem is mostly for variety if you already experienced the better titles within the genre. That aside the hidden gems that are equal to some of the best games on the system aren't hidden gems anymore. those would only be a hidden gem until some info got viral.

Remember Stuff like sunset riders, hagane or wild guns where considered hidden gems many many years ago word to mouth spread the word and thus the prices sky rocketed and they became well known. They are definitely not hidden anymore.

Heck I wouldn't be suprised if stuff like earthbound was considered a hidden gem in the west considering trash sales before it got a cult following many years later in wich it lost it's hidden gem status. In short the good hidden gems will lose their hidden gem status and with social media being the beast that it is it's only going to happen faster and faster.

I usually equate hidden gems with sleeper hits. A couple off the top of my head are Death Mark and NG. Maybe Undernauts, as well.

probably more of a cult series than a hidden gem if your really into racing games but the flatout series is amazing everything before the 3rd game is just pure arcade racing goodness and it's is still available on steam as well as having some console versions. just a great arcade/destruction derby game made by the wreck fest devs

SNES - Lester the Unlikely   (My names in the title and the mc is basically me :) )

Sega CD - The Adventures of Willy Beamish   (Not sure if this is a hidden gem, though I bet a lot of people didn't know it was ported to the Sega CD, with full voice acting and upgraded music)

PS1 - Thousand Arms   (JRPG where you gain levels by going on dates with your female party members and making them happy)

Goof Troop on SNES

It's a fantastic co-op action-puzzle game.

Felicia & Ryan Day's hilarious hatred of that game makes me want to play it even more.

IMO, hidden gem just has to mean it's an obscure game that you really like. For me, there's countless because I like games more often than not when they pique my interests. One man's gem, is another man's turd. Can't say for sure that it's for everybody.

Congo's Caper is a really fun and well made platformer on the SNES, a system already chock-full of good platformers. IMO, more balanced and fun than SMW.
Iggy's Reckin' Balls on the N64, it combines platforming with racing. Not many people remember that one.
Not too many know the Saturn for High Velocity Mountain Racing Challenge, but I feel it's a worthy contender against the OG Ridge Racer.
Alias the game, on the OG Xbox. A decent stealth-action for fans of Splinter Cell.

It all comes back to a matter of opinion, though. I don't think that just because a game sold wildly, makes it the best. Or that it sold poorly, makes it suck. I also think it's probably true that a lot of good unknown games are hidden inside licensed titles that most serious gamers write off immediately, and never even try. Kim Possible on the PS2 isn't just an isolated instance.

I made a video on the topic a while back for PS1 games - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HawqbQ-AGnQ (I did g oon to play Ronin Blade and REALLY enjoyed it!)

I never got around to it but I still feel Shadow of Memories / Shadow of Destiny never got the praise it deserved. Even 20 years later there isn't much like it. I would also like to say The Bouncer, but i think that could a lot of attention but sadly it was trashed. I personally love the game! while short and not worht full RRP, I think the 3-4 hour experience is nice and replaying the game to see the other characters perspective on the story is compelling. I would also note The Order 1886 on PS4 for the same reason, short but a solid experience worth trying for £5-10.

As fo the PS3 era one game comaes to mind instantl adn that is Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom. I found it to be quite a pleasant action/platformer/puzzle game. There was a lot of back tracking invovled in s similar style to classic Resident Evil - The lead creator Yoshiki Okamoto was invovled sand it shows in a good way. But What surprised me was how much I liked the characters! My favourite moments where when the two would sit beneath blossom tress and just chill.

The term "hidden gem" has always rubbed me the wrong way, even before Metal Jesus drove it into the ground.

His channel is where I got the term from, as well as many games to add to my wishlist. I have to check the prices a good amount of times on those games he mentions, because some of them skyrocket in value (even though he has stated that he never intends to drive up prices). If there's a game in one of his videos that looks interesting, and it's averaging under 20 bucks, it's going on my list.

NES:
Shatterhand - The best action platformer on the system that no one talks about
Vice: Project Doom - Combines 3 genres in a way Adventures of Bayou Billy only wishes it could
Gremlins 2 - Exceptional graphics and music. Hard but fun.

SNES
Super Baseball 2020 - Plays almost exactly like Baseball Stars 2 on Neo Geo, but more fun and outrageous

PS2
Gauntlet Dark Legacy - Not sure why but I have a blast with this game. The music is a hidden gem in itself and includes a few recurring melodies like the original NES Gauntlet title music.

N64
Tetrisphere - One of my favorite puzzle games.

Game Boy
Revenge of the Gator - Great pinball game on the little handheld.

Futurama for the PS2...
I don't even know if can technically call it a "hidden gem", but it is very rare and expensive here in Denmark.
It's not really that good of a game, but I enjoy it anyways

I'm not a fan of Metal Jesus in general. Beyond his copious use of the term hidden gem to describe games that are hardly hidden, he's one of the laziest big youtubers I've ever seen. Half his videos are done by other people while he just stands there looking stupid. Yet he collects the ad revenue...

But yeah, big youtubers have been responsible for jacking up prices for years now. Occasionally I'll see a game posted on an online marketplace for some ridiculous amount of money when it was like 5x cheaper just a few months ago. 90% of the time when I do some digging some big youtube channel did a review on it or it appears in a Top 10 video or something.

Azure Dreams for GBC - stumbled apon this game in the early PokéMon era and tho it seems to be some sort of clone, this game got me hooked longer than any other GB game I ever played.
Monsters look way cooler, and it was my first trip into the awesome world of roguelike games.
Whole game is around reaching the top of a 30floor Tower ... only to reveal, that there's a 99floor Basement :D It totally blew my  mind back in the days and therefore it was one of the first must-haves when I started collecting.

I can sign that statement! Suikoden and Suikoden II are really great games: SNES-graphics with PS1-capabilities, up to 101 Characters to achieve and level up! Not all Suikoden-titles are directly connected in story, but those two defenitely are and I really enjoyed playing them! A must for every RPG-Fan

I like MetalJesusRocks, been watching him for years. He's a guy that likes video games, beer, and metal music, definitely cool in my book.

And it's hardly his fault that collectors are rabid and jack up prices after he posts a video. I mean what's he supposed to do about that?

Maybe he could stop being a tool, and actually know something about console games and game collecting before he brings people on explain it all for him?

Don't really get what's to like about the guy. He's a host on his own channel, he knows relatively little, gets paid by the channel to amass this huge room of stuff, enables reselling pirates to run scams, engages in e-begging, etc. He doesn't actually produce anything worthwhile to the average retro gamer. Other people make that content possible for him, he's just the face of it.

He brings other people in when he's not as knowledgeable about something, yeah. Makes sense to me instead of talking out of his ass. But it's hardly every video.

And again, how does he have any control at all about what others do with the games he talks about? How can he control others that buy the games and drive prices up? That's like blaming Marvel Studios because they made a movie and a comic gets hot because of it. What should they do? Just stop producing content because of the crazy market out there?

And what e-begging are you talking about?

I've known some people in person who are a fan of the metal jesus, They like his personality. Think he's a chill guy. I can't blame them nog a big fan of the metal jesus personally not my kinda content but I don't have anything against the guy.

Still while youtubers did increase the prices of games I really doubt it's intentional plus allot of people would legitimately not know about allot of the more niche games. it is what it is. The more the merrier they say. I don't see any benefit for any of these youtubers to increase the market prices. if anything these youtubers usually have to pay the marked up prices to pump out content as a result I don't see the gain.

Asking viewers to help raise money, so that he and his friends can go on a vacation to collect and play video games. Asking for viewers monetary sympathy when his basement needed expensive repairs, stuff along those lines.

There's just far too many YT channels out there of people flexing their massive collections while being unable to bring any knowledge or substance to their content about said games. Just flashing their wares in front of a camera. It's purely about the collection. MJ is just the most popular of those doing that, he got lucky and his channel blew up.

Well, I mean they must be feeling somewhat good about the fact that everything they pick up on the cheap is soon to become very valuable. A lot of them won't be in the for the long haul, just while it's a hot trend that makes them money on their channel. At some point they'll pawn it all off and make good bank off the wares that they helped to hype up.

Except he never once asked for money for his basement. People gave their money freely to help through Patreon, which many YouTubers have. Nice try.

Why exactly, would he feature a video about this? How is this anyone's concern that watches his channel?

OH NO, it's going to cost me thousands to fix my house guys! I know how much you all love to get updates on the status of my walls and mold levels. By the way, he's my Patreon account.

How would it be any concern? Because it's the game room where he films his episodes and keeps all the games/systems featured in said episodes. And his Patreon is on all his YouTube videos, just like other YouTubers.

And what e-begging are you talking about?

Asking viewers to help raise money, so that he and his friends can go on a vacation to collect and play video games. Asking for viewers monetary sympathy when his basement needed expensive repairs, stuff along those lines.

I've known some people in person who are a fan of the metal jesus, They like his personality. Think he's a chill guy. I can't blame them nog a big fan of the metal jesus personally not my kinda content but I don't have anything against the guy.

There's just far too many YT channels out there of people flexing their massive collections while being unable to bring any knowledge or substance to their content about said games. Just flashing their wares in front of a camera. It's purely about the collection. MJ is just the most popular of those doing that, he got lucky and his channel blew up.

I don't see any benefit for any of these youtubers to increase the market prices.

Well, I mean they must be feeling somewhat good about the fact that everything they pick up on the cheap is soon to become very valuable. A lot of them won't be in the for the long haul, just while it's a hot trend that makes them money on their channel. It's all his own responsibility. Do you guys also need to know when his camera equipment needs upgraded? What he's having for lunch? None of that, is on the viewer of any channel. I hate when YT personalities throw that back at their viewers. "You gotta do this for me, so I can continue to make this content for you." You don't owe them anything, and you don't need to know about the financial challenges they personally face, because then they're just playing on people's sympathy. Especially when they already have commercial partnerships paying them well to do it.

But he didn't didn't do that at all. He never once asked for any money or assistance. He posted a video about his game room flooding and that it sucks on his channel about video games, so yeah it's absolutely related.

I'm rather indifferent to YouTube personalities like Metal Jesus Rocks. That being said, I don't think it's fair to support allegations like this as there are two sides to everything. On that note, I don't think you watched the video, or else you'd already have the answers to some of your questions.

Now the reason I'm letting you guys know about this—well, really two reasons. The first one being that I shared some photos on social media, and a lot of people [who] saw that were concerned. [I'm] wanting to get a status update [to] you. A lot of you have game rooms yourselves so you're very interested in how this all works out. The cost, and maybe how it applies to your situation. So that's why I wanted to let you guys now. The other thing is two, is that, I have a lot of other videos in the can that we shot in November before all of this happened. And so, you know that this happened now, but in, like, a week, you'll see where my game room is suddenly fine, and that's the reason why is because there'll be videos coming where everything's back to normal, and you'll be like "what the heck?"

I like his videos and have no problem with him or his channel. I've been collecting for years even more than him probably. Because of his videos I was made more aware of some games I would of never even knew existed.
Even though I've been collecting for years there's no way I would of found out about some things on my own even though I research a lot myself. As far as donating to his channel no one forces you to. You can still learn from some of the knowledge he shares.

I watched one video from MJR that discussed Dreamcast hidden gems. He had an """expert""" on there that went through a list of games. One of them was Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage.

This guy said said that Cloud from FFVII made big swords popular, so Berserk kind of copied that trend. I had major eye rolls from that because Berserk premiered in the 1980s - long before Cloud was a thought.

Obvz, that was enough for me to nope right out of his video/channel. Not that I followed anyone on YT, anyway.

If I'm not mistaken FFVII came out a couple years before Berserk guts rage so it's possible.

I think they meant in gaming. I don't think beserk popularized it in gaming I'll say that much it might have inspired FF VII's cloud to have that big sword but FF VII might have the power to make something big and thus popularize it.

Still beserk is quite a classic if your into anime/manga. That being said if your only coming in from the gaming side you could easily miss that detail and see this as a random game wich while from an anime doesn't seem that important. I don't think the guy meant what he said as in actual content moreso that it just sounded cool in his point of view.

The term "hidden gem" has always rubbed me the wrong way, even before Metal Jesus drove it into the ground.  [...]

Before the Internet got malwared by MJR, I used to know them as "sleeper hits". ...Or we can start calling them "hidden jewels" from now on just for the fuck of it. Sounds exotic.

I like MetalJesusRocks, been watching him for years. He's a guy that likes video games, beer, and metal music, definitely cool in my book.

Do you think Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are cool, too? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It's all about that pity party, my friend! You can ask people for things without actually asking people for things, and MJR is a pro at doing that—that's like his Jedi mind trick. Also, he worked at Sierra, and you better not dare forget it.

Anyway, basements should be the last place ever to store a video game collection, especially of that size, and especially in Seattle. Reminds me of how Radical Reggie once uploaded a video of how he left a popsicle on top or around a PS1 game and the thing melted and ruined the game, especially the manual, then blabbered in front of the camera trying to pass the video as a cautionary tale. While two completely different scenarios, that's the vibe I got from MJR's basement video, especially when I'm sure there had to be sings throughout the time he spent there that water was seeping through the walls. I keep my collection in my room, and I'm often checking the walls and all around my shelves to verify that everything is in order because I'm that OCD about my belongings, so I can imagine I'd be going over everything every hour like a maniac were my stuff in a basement. Sure, I felt for the guy, but it was all on him, so the video I think was unnecessary—that particular snippet you quoted could've easily been the start of any one of his videos.

Look, we're all a world apart and we like what we like, so to each their own; but I think there are much better people on the platform that easily beat MJR and most of his cronies without trying. For example, if you want a video game YouTuber that feels genuine and actually knows his shit, then check out Adam Koralik. In fact, I used to stumble across people with just a few hundred subs that had more personality and an apt grasp of what they were talking about than MJR. And to be clear, I bear no ill will toward the guy, as I actually at one point watched and liked his videos many years ago, but I quickly caught up to his shenanigans and stopped watching; I don't like confident tricksters.

[...] This guy said said that Cloud from FFVII made big swords popular, so Berserk kind of copied that trend. I had major eye rolls from that because Berserk premiered in the 1980s - long before Cloud was a thought.

That was John Hancock, and no, he didn't say that: he said "made popular", not copied, and there's a big difference between the two. Sure, Berserk came out in 1989, but outside of Japan, not many really knew about it; and even if you were to pick the anime, it was aired in October 1997, while FFVII was released in January 1997 in Japan and in September of the same year in the US. People in Japan who already were aware of Berserk surely saw the similarities between Guts and Cloud using big swords, but that wasn't exactly the same in the US, outside of the select few that knew about the manga.

I may not like the guy, but fair's fair. Now, had you had an issue with him saying Skies of Arcadia is a "hidden gem", then sure, I would've gotten behind that.
