So I am more into the collection of systems than games (not to say that I dont collect them aswell) but I was wondering what others thought thier favorite and least favorite game consoles are.
My Favorite is a mix between SNES for its great games and the Atari 2600 for its awesome history.
My Least Favorite has to be the Sega CD/32X combo because it has 5 games total and it takes 3 diffrent power cables that just make a mess for nothing >_>
-
I have a few that stand out.
PS1: Its going to take a miracle of a higher power to break this one away from my #1. The most amazing system ever made. The best controller out there (obviously as it hasnt changed in decades) and a vast array of games from every genre including some of the best rpgs out there.
NES: What needs to be said about the NES? It single handedly brought gaming from a boring toy to the front line of on TV entertainment. What the NES did for gaming will never ever be recreated.
SMS: The system I grew up with. Gaming wise, I considered it superior to the NES but it just didnt have the support. Still, it holds a special place in my memories.
And the one that needed to have never been made ...
N64: Honestly, what can I say good about it other than it has a good Mario Kart game. The library is sad compared to most other systems and it offers nothing as far as RPGs go. The controller is ... omg, ridiculous. Who the hell has 3 hands to hold this thing? Nintendo made a bad choice in making this still a cartridge system trying to compete with Playstation and as such the crappy games it had were 2-3 times the price. They did try all sorts of gimmics to make the system sell (countless different colored systems, rumble support, etc) but it didnt do much in my opinion.
-
Mine has changed over the past few years. If you had asked me early last year, I would have said the NES. Early this year, and I would say Super NES. Currently, it is the PlayStation. This is rather odd, since earlier this year, I seriously considered selling my entire PlayStation collection.

i can answer a few questions for you
cartridge system: nintendo stared the development of the n64 in the early 1990s and cds were somewhat new so going with cds would of been a vary risky move
gimmics:nintendo has always done this to see what will sell and what will stay
controller:its just something that you have to get used to like i did
game:there are a lot of good games on it you just have to look for them
-
My favorite: NES. It wasn't my first console, which was a 2600, but it was where my love for gaming really took root. My main passion is the NES and collecting NES games, preferably CIB though complete games are too expensive for me to collect anymore.
Least favorite: Interesting. I'd probably say Neo Geo because I've wanted one since 1990 and it has remained too pricey to justify the purchase of ever since. Many of the games are prohibitively expensive as well.

I agree there are many amazing titles for the n64, yes there are quite a few terrible ones but I think the jewels out shine them. as for the controller, it is a weird model but if you think about it the d pad is on the (third handle) and that is not used very often. As was stated CD's were very new and after the mess up with sony and the flop of the zelda and mario games on the Phillips CDI, Nintendo went back to the way they knew which was carts.

My top retro consoles would have to be:
Saturn - So many good games and it's really an under appreciated console. Possibly the best console of the generation for arcade ports and there is a huge library of imports to play. I'm seriously tempted to pick up a second one to mod for region free play.
Game Boy - It's the system that helped me survive years of road trips. I can't even count the number of AA batteries I've gone through on that thing.
PlayStation 2 - It was the 2nd console I ever bought on my own. So many good games and memories. I traded some of my games off for it though and am in the process of re-buying them now.
-
PS3 (Launch "fattie" w/ PS1, 2, and 3 playability) > PS2 (playing PS1 & 2 games) > PS1...FTW!
-
There are just too many games on each that I enjoy but if I had a gun to my head I would pick the NES. It's what I grew up with and I love the originality of the games.
-
To play: SNES. So many great games and a good sized library.
To collect for: NES. A huge library, and the vast majority can be had quite cheaply nowadays.
-
Mine is snes- The amount of different quality games is amazing IMO, Maybe it's nostalgia talking but I still think the games still look impressive today. Even though Im not an RPG player at all, all the ones I really enjoy are on snes, IMHO they hold up better simply because of the 2D graphics. Some of the most important gaming series really came into their own on the snes, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Contra the list goes on and on.
Saturn- Tons of great Import only shoot em ups and fighting games, the best controller ever, tons of great 2D games very high quality underrated games, unfortunatly Sega made some bad decisions in the US with it, but still a great nice system that is very impressive.
Neo Geo- I have to agree with blipcs76 on the fact that the Neo Geo is super pricey and I personally wouldnt reccomend the system because of that and the fact that really the only reason to have one is if you love fighting games, my personal favorite genre. But IMHO you cant really emulate that feeling on another console. Outstanding 2D visuals and great underrated fighters make this one of my favorites.
Gamecube- Of course I had to list the gamecube, I love it! Most underrated system so far, Tons of great Nintendo exclusives I love the controller great little system that holds it's own very well.
I'd have to go with the Jaguar as my least favorite, I have yet to play a game on it that is... well... good. I guess it had some potential but even thats hard to say because the exclusive for it are still horrible. Weird slightly awkward controller and horrible games make this a bad system
-
I really can't pick just one which is why I have the means of playing pretty much anything from the 8bit era to modern times in my living room. If somebody twisted my arm I would probably narrow that down to 16bit era consoles + Saturn... but I'd still miss everything else :)
-
Mine is the Vectrex, still have the one I got christmas 1983/84. Love the vector graphics.

I know the guy selling it if you guys are interested.
-
That's an amazing deal, I'd go for it just for the controller... If I didn't live 2600 kilometers away :P
I have a Vectrex and I will say that it is really cool... but my controller is broken (button 4 doesn't work, so I can't shoot in the built-in game) and I still haven't had time to fix it.
As for my favorite old console, no doubt the SNES, it just has the best game library out there.

We will simply have to (friendly:), of course :P
agree to disagree here as I would substitute your "SNES" w/ "Playstation" for the best library

Its hard to argue against the Playstation's vast library. But, on the SNES side, its hard to say that there are any games out there on any system at all that can compare to Super Metroid, Zelda: Link to the past, Super Mario RPG, etc. While the library isnt as large as playstation, its library is absolutely solid.

I frankly don't enjoy the Playstation much. Not that it doesn't have great games, but there's not a lot of games that really come to mind as some of the greats of the industry to me, especially when compared to the SNES :P
Actually, it's not just the Playstation, it's that generation as a whole I'm not too fond of. I love the N64, but it only has a handful of great games. It's the same thing with the Playstation for me. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it was a very experimental phase in gaming, where most companies had no idea what they were doing.
Not that I have any issues with you liking the Playstation at all, it's just not really my thing and I felt like failing at explaining myself :P

that why i hate when people say how bad the n64 was they dont understand that the n64 was an experiment that started back in early 90s and the reason the n64 does not use cds is because nintendo got burned it just look up snes cd add on
-
I'm going to be the odd one out and say the Genesis. It was my first console. So much time spent on Sonic and Phantasy Star.
-
@jobocan -
Totally cool; man 8)
Depending on when/what people started gaming on, and their preference in genres...there's really no *WRONG* answer here as it's all subjective :P
-
Top 3 are
1. Genesis
2. Vectrex
3. Dreamcast.
I really dislike the n64, play station and Xbox.

Why?
-
My favorite is the SNES, followed closely by the original PlayStation. My least fav is the N64...
-
1) SNES
2) PS2
3) GBA
The PS2 might not be retro enough but hey, I had to make a list :)
-
For me, it's hard to see the Playstation as a retro console. I still remember when it was brand new. My favourite console anyway is Sega Genesis. Second would be the Game Boy.
-
I still remember discussing this new fangled Nintendo console with the weird buttons on the sides of the controllers with my classmates - doesn't mean it's not now old ;)
Seriously though I can see where you're coming from completely because I feel a bit weird calling the PS2 retro, but I think we need keep in mind that even "modern" titles like Final Fantasy X are now over a decade old at this point. I think we need to keep re-evaluating our definition, I'd much rather feel a bit weird welcoming "new" consoles to the retro fold instead of being stuck with some arbitrary "Well this was called retro when I learnt what retro was so I'm sticking to this" divide.
-
I know :) Just means that it's something I grew up with. In all honesty, I'm glad I grew up with the consoles I had at the time I was growing, rather than PS3's and Wii U's. These past 6 years just flew...
-
For me I would have to say that my favorite retro consoles are:
1). Atari 2600 - Brings me back to when I was a kid and me and my best friend use to play Pitfall, Stampede, Yars Revenge, ETC..
2). ColecoVision / ADAM - My first major purchase that I bought with my own hard earned money was the ADAM computer, I then Bought a ColecoVision Because I got tired of dragging the computer down stairs when family came over to play. Also just discovered that my parents just threw out my ADAM computer out when they moved. I had packed it in the original box and all :'(
3). NES - Just great memories of me and my son playing to the wee hours of the night. Some great bonding moments cuz technically he is my step son, but we have such a great bond now that even after me and his mom divorced we still have a great bond and I am still his dad.
-
If I ever have the money, I'm buying a vectrex. My friend had one when I was younger, but dismissed it over other consoles. Looking back, I wish I spent more time with that beast :( Never judge a book by its cover is what I learned that day...

That's exactly how I feel about the PS2. I feel kinda weird seeing people call it a retro console.

But, the PS2 is now 12 years old. The way I see it, is if the system no longer being made and games are no longer coming out for it. It's no longer a "modern" console. So if it's no longer a "modern" console, wouldn't it then become a "retro" console?

I think it's just where people think the system is still TOO modern to be called a "retro" system yet. Give it at least 5 more years and then probably it'll be more "retro" then.
My list would have to be:
PS1
SNES
Game Boy (original)

@disgaeniac I don't like the N64 because of the lack of good games, sure there are some of the most amazing games of all time on it, but the N64 library seems kind of lacking. Also the controller is one of the strangest things I have ever used. The playstation has a weird regular controller (dualshock is good but, not all games support it.). in a weird way, I just don't like it, its the same with the XBOX. I cant really explain why. The games just aren't very interesting. And I know I shouldn't be complaining about graphics, but the playstation's graphics are not appealing. They make the console somewhat not enjoyable to play.

Your opinion of the N64 is flawless ... The xbox I just dont like either. I cant explain it myself.
The playstation, however, is amazing. There is a game for any person on the planet to enjoy and the controller is fantastic (obviously cause they havent changed it much in 3 consoles). I love the console forever. :)
-
The N64 library is definitely lacking, and I hate that freaking controller! The awesome games on it though are so good that its worth getting one. Heck its worth getting just for Ocarina of Time!

There are several controllers that are much more user friendly out there. I really like this:
It take a few minutes to get adjusted if you've been messing with the original controller, but it's well worth it if you can find one.
-
Do you have one of those? I want to try it if you do.
-

Indeed I do.
-
That controller alone could mean a totally different playability for me on the N64. Im going to come by this weekend and steal it from ya :)
-
that controller is awesome Im going to have to look into getting one for myself
-
I wouldn't mind tracking one down myself. Hmm, of course I never had a problem playing games on the original N64 controller anyway. :P
-
My favorites are:
Vectrex
dreamcast
NES
genesis
atari 2600
Least favorites:
3do
linx (except for electrocop )
Atari 5200
-
I know what you mean about collecting hardware. I also have a love for wanting to collect the hardware. Be that as it may I'm not going to play favorites though. I will say that the build quality of some is definitely better than others.
-
I'd have to say my favorite is the Atari 2600! It was my very first experience with playing a video game and I would site for hours and play/watch my older brothers playing games on it. :) It's what started my love of videogames and more importantly RPGs. (Adventure was the first game my dad bought for the Atari and he would sit there and help me play it. I think I was around 4 or 5) :) I just get all nostalgic every time I see that console.
As for favorite console to actually sit and play, I'd have to say the Gamecube or PS2... It's weird to think that some of these consoles are as old as they are. it seems like they just came out. I can remember shelling out $200 for a brand new N64 (one of the few consoles I've purchased new) and now thier a dime a dozen, so to speak. I tend to think of a system as "retro" when GameStop stops selling games for it. LOL
-
For me it would be the SNES for sure. My favorite system hands down.
As for a disliked system? I'm not really sure I have one.. ?

Same w/ me & my sister!
Atari 2600:
Adventure, Combat, and Pitfall Harry for X-Mas (when it/they came out)!
(the start of an addiction:)
We also had the previous Atari -forget what it was called- (someone here can probably remember the name of the "system")...it had a dial/paddle to twist and play "Breakout" on it...

Another vote for SNES. Whenever I go emulating, I find I gravitate towards SNES games.
It's like, you knew the limitations of the system, and it was ok.

My favorite console is the NES / Famicom
-
Actual Retro... hmmm
Tie between the TurboGrafx-16 and the NES
-
PS1, lots of good games, 1st games for a few series (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Suikoden etc)
N64 : especialy for the jpn games
SNES for all the good RPGs.
-
My top 5 systems:
1. NES - The system that made me fall in love with gaming. We did have an Atari 2600 before it that was my older sister's, but it never held my attention for long. The NES, though, with it's awesome sound and music, great graphics (compared to Atari 2600, that is), large explorable worlds, and game with a story and ending; was like digital crack for me. I couldn't get enough. And my mom was awesome enough to get me Legend of Zelda, TMNT, Star Soldier, and Pin-Bot as my first games (along with Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cart that came with the NES, of course).
2. PS1 - I picked this system because it was the first system I played fully 3-D games on (other than a few here and there like Star Fox and Wolfenstein 3-D on SNES). At first I had to get used to the controls and camera while playing these game, but once I got past that learning curve I had a blast. And the PS1's game library is just amazing. Developers back then were really experimenting with different things which created a vastly varied library of games on the PS1.
3. SNES - I love the SNES because it took everything awesome about the NES and made it all better: Better graphics, better sound, bigger games, a better controller, and more reliable hardware (no more annoying screen-blinkies!). And it had a helluva game library.
4. Sega Genesis - I love the 16-bit era, and while I liked my SNES better, the Sega Genesis isn't far behind. This was when Sega was at it's peak, IMO, giving us a plethora of great first-party titles. Plus Sega had a lot of lesser-known third-party developers releasing games on the Genesis. Some were stinkers, but many of them were hidden gems and made the Genesis game library unique.
5. GBA - Preferably the awesome backlit SP model. This handheld is easily the best handheld of all-time, IMO. Great original games, ports of some of the best NES and SNES games, and it's backwards compatible with original Game Boy and GB Color games. Plus that sweet backlit screen really made those old Game Boy titles look a whole lot better.
-
Favorite - Dreamcast.
I honestly think it was all timing for me. I grew up loving the genesis. My first console was the NES. But I found a cool niche and love of gaming on the genesis. The genesis remained one of my favorites over the 32-bit generation. But once the Dreamcast was coming out, I was getting old enough to get a job. It wasn't a legit job since I was around 14. But I worked that summer outisde of town on a farm several days a week. Bought and saved up for a Dreamcast. It is still one of the most nostalgic systems for me.
It might be weird, but I LOVE the sounds it makes. The system has this very distinct calming spin to the disc as well as the grinding of the laser. And although it might be a horrible sound the VMU beep that every dreamcast owner knows makes me so happy.
_____________
Least Favorite - Playstation
It is honestly far from my least favorite but I don't want to put something obvious like the game.com down. And I've never played a 3DO or some others that would probably be worse. I am picking a system based on being a major release and one that I have played.
It really comes down to me disliking the 32-bit generation. As was mentioned earlier it was experimental. And the playstation had the combination of not doing 3D like the N64 or 2D like the Saturn. I also dislike the dual shock. Having said that, it is a good system. Has some FANTASTIC RPGs. It just never really connected with me.
