Title: Types of games you'd like to see
Post by: turf on December 31, 2012, 09:01:40 pm
What types of games would you like to see made?
Personally, I would love for there to be a sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2.  I've been playing it a lot lately and wish there was a modern version of it.  People shit on it a lot, but SMB 2 is a great game.  I love that you can pick a different character with a different ability.

What have you been hoping for?

I would love to see light gun games come back.

Shenmue HD and Shenmue 3.

I want a Panzer Dragoon HD collection.

I want to see a Zombies Ate My Neighbors remake.

I would like a Super Smash TV remake. (Even as a FPS, I think that would be sweet. First person, massive weapons, hundreds of mutants, 4 minutes to survive, go for the high score)

I'd like to see a Telltale take on Maniac Mansion. And just for my own enjoyment I would like to see them take on Night Trap. Seriously... that would be awesome.

Most of these would end up being silly and probably pretty bad. But I'd still like to see them.

I want to see 8-16 bit style RPGs returned. Hopefully Ni No Kuni brings back that feeling that I miss from playing games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI. Ive looked at the games people call RPGs now and it blows my mind as to what they were thinking.

Have you checked out Pier Solar? It is literally a new 16-bit RPG. They put amazing detail into making it feel like you just got a completely new genesis game as well. The packaging is top notch.

I want to see a whole lot of Sega Saturn bullet hell shooters that are new come out. The only problem is for people to figure the console out.

I second Smash TV something kind of like Serious Sam if it were to be done as an FPS
New Metroid, I think they kind of had the right idea with Other M gameplay-wise but a better long story would be nice.
New 2D or even 2.5D Castlevania thats not that clusterfuck "metroidvania" style but traditional.
Maybe a completely new SNK fighting game

#1 = A NEW Shadow Hearts game for the PS3 (Don't care if it's on any other consoles, or not:)

#2 = A HD-Compilation of the 3 existing Shadow Hearts games (w/ Koudelka HD as an un-lockable:)

#3 = A New, HD Dark Cloud game :)

#4 = THE LAST GUARDIAN; God-damnit  >:(

#5 = The HD "Re-master" of FF-X that was *only* announced; like, forever-ago!

#6 = Persona 5 *NOT* on a hand-held  ;)

#7 = A PS3-release for *EVERY* RPG that only gets hand-held releases  :o

- I reserve the right to add to this if/as I think of more  8)

I just posted this in the "Anonymous" sticky-thread right before this thread was created, but it fits perfectly into this thread. So I guess I'll just copy that post over here:

I'd love to see a good JRPG, with the mythology and art-style of Western RPGs.

Like I want it to have the traditional experience, level-up, and menu-based battle system of a JRPG, but I want to see creatures and artwork from a Western sensibility. I want to see some bad-ass looking warriors, evil-looking mages, huge fire-breathing dragons, Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Trolls, etc. And I want to see a Western art-style, rather than a Manga-influenced art-style.

THIS
I love the Battlefront games!

I would also like to see Q*bert make a come back.  Nearly brought tears to my eyes when I saw him in Wreck it Ralph.

Why won't developers listen to us?  SmashTV would be awesome!  Tons of enemies and that awesome announcer.  And how many games have new toasters as prizes?

I was/am a huge fan of the battlefront games.  I had both of them on the original Xbox.  I like the first one better.  The Jedi in the second one changed the game too much.  In fact, I need to get that one out and give it a go in all my free time.

Yeah I also prefer the first one.  The second one still has a good online community too on PC!  IIRC Battlefront 1 PC servers were shutdown a couple months ago...

I think a platformer like that would be fun, just as long as they don't lie to us and call it a Mario game :D

We didn't know any better back when it was new, and we all had a blast with it until Super Mario Bros. 3 came out. Who cares if it has Mario or not?

I'm just curious - because I've seen a lot of interest from FF VII fans over the years in an HD-remake...would those of you who want this want the *Exact* same game as the original...just "HD-i-fied"...or what (if any) changes/additions might you want to see for it?

I'd love to see something in the same vein as the old Dungeon & Dragon RPG games for Amiga/C64.  Or even something like the old point-and-click adventure games (Kings Quest, Kyrandia, etc.).  Something that evokes that same kind of magical feeling.  I only got that kind of feeling from one "recent"-ish game, The Last Journey.  Perhaps I'm too nostalgiac, though...   ;)

I also second The Last Guardian.

Title: Re: Types of games you'd like to see

I think most of the FFVII community wants to see the exact same game, only with PS3 graphics. Not sure if that means removal of the SD character models in favor of more realistic ones or not. I'm thinking the majority wants to see the latter more than the former though.

Personally, I'd couldn't care less about a remake of FFVII. Not sure if I'd buy it or not if they did release something along those lines. Don't get me wrong, I love FFVII, but I just don't care if they ever remake it with models that look like their Advent Children counterparts.

Any of the following would make it a great gaming year for me:

Shining Force IV or Phantasy Star 5 (been waiting almost 20 years but I can dream right!?)

It's probably the only homebrew I've actually been interested in. The CGR Review shows some nice gameplay. Every review has been raving about it. And they've been selling out of each reprint since 2009 with the word of mouth just getting stronger as time moves on.

Why isn't there a game where you play as the "other guy" The hero's best friend who has to get saved all the time by the hero?

You would run into an area that is full of bad guys and then hid behind cover and call out different repetitive phrases until he comes to save you. Then you would have a different map than he does so you would be constantly running the wrong way and he would have to come and find you. Then when there is a boss fight you take more damage than he does and die just before he wins the first 5 times he tries to finish it.

I thought there was something similar to it on the PS3.  I remember reading about a game where you play as a companion of the main hero.  It was also supposed to feature online co-op for up to 4 players or so.  It's been years since I read about it.  I don't even know if it made out the door or even to this side of the lake.

The third one would signal that the world is headed in the right direction again.

It's going to be extremely tough to keep my list from turning into a list of annoyances, but...

- Obscure, notable Japanese games that should have been released here a long time ago. Black/Matrix, Treasure of the Rudras, Bahamut Lagoon, Mother 3, Shin Megami Tensei I/II/If... the list goes on.

- JRPGs with more mature storylines and characters. MegaTen and Shadow Hearts are examples that desperately need to be followed.

- Western games that aren't inspired by history, Tolkien, Star Wars, Aliens, or "our post 9/11 world."

- 2D games in physical form. I'm sick of this stuff being junked onto PSN/XBLA.

- Shadow Hearts. An HD collection, new game, I don't care, just give us back one of the greatest series ever made.

- Fatal Frame and Bayonetta. I'm gonna leave it at that.

Hahaha, likewise!

Seriously though, Shadow Hearts: Covenant? There are no words to describe how much I love this game. That, along with Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, changed how I look at RPGs forever.
Title: Re: Types of games you'd like to see

Yeah, Covenant is my favorite PS2 RPG -and- one of my all time favs on any system.

Same thing w/ TotFL...just change "RPG" for "Dungeon-Crawler".

I also really liked the SMT games that I've played, so far (Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Persona 3 & 4, and Nocturne).

I already have (and need to get to:) Persona: Revelations (PS1 & PSP), Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PS1), and Persona: Innocent Sin (on the PSP), Strange Journey (DS), Devil Survivor: Overclocked (3-DS) & DeSu2 (DS) -as well as- SMT: Soul Hackers on pre-order...

...have ya played/can ya tell me anything about any of those?

Oh yeah - the only "SH" game that I haven't played yet is the prequel, Koudelka...and she's in the backlog, too  8)

Coming from the more recent games as you are, most of those - esp. Persona and Persona 2 - will be a little bit of a system shock. While they won't be totally unfamiliar, things are generally less refined - much more challenging, fusion system is less user friendly and requires a lot of experimentation, demon recruitment can be pretty frustrating, and a lot of the answers that work really make NO sense at all, and collecting and exchanging rumors (which weren't part of later games) has a huge impact. Think of earlier Persona games like Nocturne and you'll do alright.

Persona: Revelations is the biggest oddity, in that the localization is pure and utter garbage. Tons of changes to character names and appearances, basically anything to make them non-Japanese, including one who speaks in ebonics. Honestly, probably the worst release Atlus ever produced, but thankfully, the PSP port does not suffer from any of this - if you don't have it yet, get it while you still can, and keep Revelations strictly for collecting.

Devil Survivor 2 isn't drastically difference from the first, so if you liked DS, you'll love it :)

As for Strange Journey, I unfortunately haven't gotten around to playing it yet (argh, backlog), but as with every SMT game, I'm sure it's awesome. From the looks of it, it's a throwback to the very earliest MegaTen games, at least in terms of the perspective you're playing from. Shame we never got them here.

And yeah, Koudelka's on my list too - prices started climbing a bit more than I'd like though, so I keep putting it off. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a near-mint copy under $30 one of these days.

I picked up the first one a few weeks back, which ran me around $70'ish (ughhh), but I haven't had time to play it. Second game is still on my list, and I think I need the box set with the plushie because it's cute and apparently, I am a sucker for that shit.

I love collection disks.  There are a ton of games I've missed over the years and a lot are really expensive now.  I especially like it when a whole series is put in one package (like the Contra and Castlevania examples).  I think I only have 1 compilation from a publisher and that's the SNK collection for Wii. I found it at a yard sale.

Bring on the collections. Give me a Mario RPG one. Give me a Donkey Kong Country one. Give me... Hell, I'll take one for any series with 4+ games.

I just remembered this while reading this thread. Several years ago, a web comic writer (asofterworld) was looking for a job. Out of boredom and frustration he started making fake cover letters and sending them out. This is the cover letter he sent to Nintendo detailing the types of games he would like to see.

Quote
Dear Nintendo,

I am writing to apply for the position of game designer with your company. We have a chance here to help children experience games that are more true to life than any game before them. Computer graphics have improved and improved and improved, and some day soon we're going to have to ask ourselves where we can go next in our search for realism.

We need virtual pet games where you clean and feed and love your furry little friend and that car still comes out of nowhere so smoothly, a god of aerodynamics and passenger safety. Where you hear your father's quiet joke that night, when he thinks you are asleep.

We need a new Mario game, where you rescue the princess in the first ten minutes, and for the rest of the game you try and push down that sick feeling in your stomach that she's "damaged goods", a concept detailed again and again in the profoundly sex negative instruction booklet, and when Luigi makes a crack about her and Bowser, you break his nose and immediately regret it. When Peach asks you, in the quiet of her mushroom castle bedroom "do you still love me?" you pretend to be asleep. You press the A button rhythmically, to control your breath, keep it even.

We need an airport simulator, where the planes carry your whole family from A to B, job to job, and dad still drinks in the shower and your older sister still has casual sex that she confides might bring back a feeling she's certain she didn't imagine. Where the plane touches down and you all lean forward in your seats because of inertia, and again and again someone says "I hate to fly".

Yours,

Joey Comeau

Sadly, I suspect we are both big fans of women, likely the scantily clad geek variety, but that aside, the love fest will continue!

Hear Hear!

- Misread that at 1st as "fans of big women" XD  :o

Haha, I'm afraid I'm a little too skinny for that.

I would love to see light gun games come back.

Shenmue HD and Shenmue 3.

I want a Panzer Dragoon HD collection.

Missed this post earlier, but I would LOVE to see all of this happen. Sadly, I suspect my faves like Elemental Gearbolt are lost to history :/

^ Never knew that existed! That's a fine collection. Question is, why didn't they port it to consoles? And how do those games play on PC?

That's from 2002, and Konami was ... Konami. They released a bunch of PC games during that era and basically abandoned them. The games play okay but have the VRC6 emulation glitches of the time (oddly tiled graphics, some audio issues.)

I have it and have played a bit of it. It's really pretty crappy. If you want a copy of it, I think I picked up my sealed copy for like $5?
