Title: Japan or bust!
Post by: desocietas on March 30, 2013, 10:51:53 pm
Ok, the day is finally here - I'll be in Japan in approximately two days.  Approximately because the time change still boggles my mind.

I know I should stop by one of the Hot Potatoes... What else?  I'll be in Tokyo for a few days, then off to the Osaka/Kobe/Kyoto area.  Has anyone else been there before?  Any suggestions?  Anything I should look for for bringing back with me?

lol I'll see what kind of luggage I end up bringing with me... still have decided yet :\

I'll be there for about 10 days.  Not long enough!  But I'm promising myself that I'll go again.  And will learn more Japanese for that trip.

Haha, we're renting a wifi device while we're there, so I'll still check in on y'all about any suggestions for places to go or gaming stuff to look for.  Too bad I can't read Japanese (yet)...

I used to live there as a kid when my family was stationed there. There are still somethings in the right spot. So, I will give some suggestions as best as I can.

Go to Harajuku. One of the best places ever! Number 1 thing to do... Marion Crepes is amazing! Go there, eat crepes, and then  be happy. If you could mail back satisfaction after eating those delicious things, Iwould have you do that. The best I can do in terms of directions is to copy and paste this into google maps. Go to street view. It is a few feet east with a blue roof thing.

Tōkyō-to, Shibuya-ku, Jingūmae, 1丁目20−6 ミスギビル

Just off of Harajuku is the Tamagotchi Donut store. I'm amazed that is still there. From the above address, go west just past the Lotteria. Then North. It is immediately on the right. All of this is easy to find since it is just off of Harajuku station.

There are some sweet SEGA arcades in Shibuya. You won't have trouble finding them. But it can be fun to spend a bit of time in them.

All over Japan are soft serve ice cream machines. They usually have about 30 flavors. Get Green Tea Ice Cream. It is amazing! The good ones sprinkle green tea on top. I have literally spent years trying to track down how to order one of these ice cream machines. They are like the ice cream equivalent of a Keurig coffee machine in how they work.

Go to Book Off.

If you want temples, go to Kyoto.

I've heard about Book Off!  Those suggestions are great - crepes sound awesome, and donuts! Who doesn't like donuts?!

And thanks for letting me know about the arcades... I know there are probably a lot but I wouldn't know where the "good" ones would be.  And the blue roof directions -- super helpful; even with wifi and Google Maps, I think I'll still have a really hard time figuring out where things are over there.  Entering an address into Google Maps seems to confuse it sometimes :\

I also forget you have Book Off in San Francisco. I don't know how american they are though...

If you have any questions about areas, let me know. I may not know too much.

For 10 days and just gauging your interests as best as I can, Harajuku and Shibuya will be the best places. You might take the train to Asukusa and Akihabara to get some tourist stuff.

Were you planning on going anywhere besides Tokyo?

I currently live in Kyoto. I live a few blocks away from kyoto station and kamo-gawa. My recommendation is get to Kyoto/Nara because the cherry blossoms are currently in bloom and they are amazing. Walk along the river. Enjoy the beauty of it while the Sakura's are still around. Go to Gion and drink by the river at night. On Saturday's there is a band as well as a fire dancer all by the river. Everyone is having a great time. Osaka will be great as well. Will probably go there in a few days. I don't frequent it enough to really tell you any good spots. And I have yet to go to Tokyo since I have been living here but I will be there for a few days before going off to Thailand (and then subsequently back to Japan a week later). All I can recommend is that you see as much as you can and really enjoy it. There are sooooooo many nooks and crannies with little shops and bars. It's a gift in itself to just explore. I have run into beautiful gardens in the middle of cities just by getting lost in the alley ways. I would recommend putting anything hobby related off because there is so much to see and experience and ten days is not enough!

But if you must indulge just go to a hard off. You will always find gold there. Or go to Akihabara to really be engulfed in Nerd Nirvana.

I've been away from you all for too long!  It's been a few days in Tokyo so far and have had some awesome sushi and getting a little more used to the subways.  We activate our JR pass today, so that opens up some new options.  I'm just researching now of spots to go to in Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Roppongi Hills, etc.) but I'm still not sure where I'll end up.  The language is still foreign, but I'm glad I took a little time out to study even just some very, very basic hiragana.  Doesn't really help me much, but there's some comfort in being able to recognize it as well as basic phrases like "thank you" and "can I have _____?"

Thanks for the tips on Kyoto!  We'll be over there on the 6th, I believe and will be there for a few days.

Ok, now back to researching on any cool gamer-related spots.

I's back!

To answer everyone's burning question, I got 251 pickups through StreetPass after 8 days!  Prior to that, I had 223 after having the 3DS since launch in America... :\

Also, no, I did not bring back anything for you :\  But I took pictures to share!

Thanks!  Nah, it was all Japanese stuff, and I'm not an import gamer (yet).  I only got to spend about 30 min in Book-Off and didn't really have a chance to go anywhere else.  Stopped by Kiddy Land, but they didn't have video games.  Though the duty-free shop at the airport even had import games to buy!
