I never had it growing up, but ever since I started collecting for it, it's become one of my favorite consoles. What are some of your favorite titles? Here are some of mine:
Phantasy Star
Master of Darkness
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Golvellius
-
There are a few SMS collectors on here, myself included. I just picked up one more CIB today making my missing list for the CIB US set down to 6 titles. For the total NA (US + Canada) list Im only missing 16 titles. Not to mention I pick up games that I think should have been released in the states such as Bubble bobble, Ninja gaiden, Dragon crystal, Heroes of the lance, etc. I also have 5 of the 23 kiosk Not for resale games.
Golden axe warrior, Phantasy star, Miracle warriors, Golvellius, Ys, Rocky, R-Type, Astro warrior, Basketball nightmare, Ultima IV, Alex Kidd in miracle world are some of my top choices.
-
Guilty as charged. My first priority when it comes to SMS is to get a CIB full collection of US releases, since there really weren't that many (114), and then I'll continue on with UK games. I only have 30 US and 2 UK games right now, and they include Ultima IV, Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Fantasy Zone II, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, and Teddy Boy (just to name favorites). Speaking of Teddy Boy, I'm really pining to get all the Sega Cards, since they're cool as hell.
-
I don't have a huge collection of SMS games; however, I do collect for it and its one of my favorite systems. Here are some of my favorite games on the Master System:
* Golvellius
* Rampage (To me, this is the best port available)
* Phantasy Star
* Spy Vs Spy
* Space Harrier
* Alex Kidd
* Hang On (Yes I like this game)
-
Rampage for me too. Worth owning just for this great port. I like Hang On, Astro Warrior, and Outrun too
-
Just started collecting for it
-
I do, but I don't have a huge collection or anything. It's mostly made-up of the 1st-party Sega essentials.
My favorite game on the system is actually this kind of strange, and very foreign feeling horizontal shoot-em up called Cloud Master. It was one of the first shoot-em ups I played outside of Star Soldier on NES, so it was one of those games that made me fall in love with the genre.

Count me in.
It is too bad that I didn't just pick up everything I needed 10 years ago because I could have completed an international collection for cheap!
I also collect Mark III systems and Master Systems with the YM2413 FM chips from Japan along with any software I can get my hands on.

...
I need to play this!
-
To be honest I've never seen one nor do I personally know anyone who had one.
-
Some of my favorites are Astro Warrior, Bomber Raid, Shooting Gallery and Spy vs Spy. I need to sit down and play through the collection a bit more; haven't had a chance to give the collection much love recently.
-
The only time I've played a Master System was prolly 7 years ago. Matt and I knocked out Double Dragon on it. It was super fun, but I doubt I'd start up an SMS collection anytime soon.
-
I have a respectable Master System collection. Rampage and Penguin Land are my favorite.
-
For those of you who listed Phantasy Star as one of your favorites - Were any of you actually able to complete the game without a guide?
I loved the game too, but I remember playing that game and I had no clue what to do until I started reading a guide. They literally wanted it to be as crazy as possible just to get the road pass you need at the start of the game. I would have never thought to do what you have to do on my own. Maybe I'm just stupid.
-
I beat the game way back in the day when it was still selling on the shelves. Its a pretty tough game but I used to play my RPGs with friends so we had a collective of ideas all the time. The hardest part of Phantasy star without a guide are the dungeons. They can be pretty intricate with multiple levels, walls that all look the same, and traps that make you fall floors so you can lose where you are.
-
I collect for the master system. I have around 60 games. It's not my main system I collect for, but I would like to get a lot more games for it.
My favorite is Phantasy Star. And I did use a guide. I commented way back on "what games are you perfect 10s" and this was the reason I was unable to list it. There are sections that I find it close to impossible. It's not the dungeons, its the weird stuff you have to find that seems close to impossible.
Other favorites:
Sonic
Wonder Boy series
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Rampage
Double Dragon
After Burner
-
oh yes, ms collector here too.
got a rather nice collection here in the uk, got about 10 ntsc games and about 60 pal ones
-
I have 62 games for my SMS and even own a SMS2.
Also have the Japanese Sega SG 1000 and SG 1000 II.
Mostly like to play the shooters on it.

I started collecting Master System titles a year or so ago. Sadly, the selection available to me has not been very large, so I only have four games or so. It's a very humble beginning, but you have to start somewhere.
One of the few games in my collection that I'm particular pleased with is King's Quest. I acquired this less as Master System selection and more just as a part of my collection of King's Quest games. But it is still an interesting curiosity to see a classic adventure game like this available on such an early home console.
I'm really hoping to get a copy of Phantasy Star.

Ooh a fellow KQ collector!
KQI on SMS is flat out terrible! lol

I too collect for SMS but admittedly not a top 5 console for me to collect for. My cousin had one back in 1987 so playing Space Harrier and Out Run on it were my primary memories when I was young. Picked up one cheap with some games about 15 years ago or so and will periodically buy games here and there when I find them. Might have to utilize ebay to get some of the games I really truly want still such as Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Y's the Vanished Omen, Golden Axe Warrior & Basketball Nightmare.
Top 5 SMS in my collection:
5. R-Type
4. Fantasy Zone
3. Phantasy Star
2. Shinobi
1. Wonder Boy 3: Dragon's Trap
-
Had one when I was younger and sold it to buy a genesis. Been able to find a system and a game. Wish I had more but are hard to come by around here. It was a great system and still is.
-
seems sooo hard to collect for
the local retro shop near me VERY rarely gets SMS games in.
and i've never seen a console in my life.

Exactly. "If" they do get anything it is quite pricey.

I bought my first sms last year I only have 23 games so far my favs are Double Dragon,Shinobi,Wonder Boy,Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
-
I bought my SMS as a bundle from Goodwill the day before I started my first job out of college.
$24.99 and it came with 2 controllers, a zapper, and 10 CIB games.
I still don't know what the built-in game is for my SMS.
-
I do collect Master System too.
This console was a huge hit in Brazil in the late 80´s and i was a kid totally influenced by it back then. I was 12 when i got mine in the ´89 xmas with 2 games. The SMS was a very loved console here.
Unfortunally i was a lousy kid when it came to take care of my game and console boxes and manuals. My first Master System lost its box and manuals. Also, the brazilian parts of the video game had terrible quality. Soon all the cables started to snap internally, making the controllers malfunction, the ac/dc power supply to fail and the RF cable not to work any more. I used to put duct tape on my SMS so it could fix a proper working position of the cables for me to play (it has so much duct tape on it that resembled a mummy... half of the console was covered by it). A few years later (in 2000 if i´m not mistaken) i sold the console and what was left of its cartridges.
I regretted that a few years later since that SMS was a xmas present from my parents. In 2006, i found a complete one while shopping downtown with a friend. It came exactly as my first one: first model, box, manual, every piece of hardware working perfectly. I didn´t have any doubts and bought it (it costed me 14 dollars!) since it was a bargain. Then i started to track down the games again and i've never abandon it ever since.
Today i have 26 SMS games. Some of them are NA releases, some are BR and some are EUR. Most of them are complete. I wish i could change all my games for NA releases since their boxes and manuals are made of plastic and better paper. Brazilian boxes were made out of cardboard and they got easily damaged thru the years. Just some later games got proper plastic boxes, which started to happen only on 1993 here.
The SMS is one of my favorite and nostalgic video games. It was my second game console (my first was an Atari 2600) but i got a lot more emotionally attached to it. It was the dawn of a new generation for me (the NES wasn´t that strong here and the SMS had a massive marketing campaign) and it made me play way more ever since, specially because i moved to another city and i´ve spent a lot of time playing it after we moved.
Backstory aside, here are some of my favorite SMS games:
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa
Ghostbusters (by far the best 8-bit version of this game i've ever played)
Jogos de Verão (it translates to "Summer Games" - a localized translation of California Games)
Mônica no Castelo do Dragão (it translates to "Monica in the Dragon´s Castle" - a modified brazilian release of Wonder Boy in Monster Land)
Phantasy Star (it was completely translated to brazilian portuguese when released here)
OutRun
Zillion
Let me just add that 2 games were specially important in making the SMS popular here: Gangster Town and Jogos de Verão. Almost every SMS owner had this games back then.
HarvestDude™

Not a huge collection and overall the sound is pretty bad for most games. Nes is superior in that way.
Worthwile favourite games wich I own and enjoyed quite allot
master of darkness castlevania clone
Sagaia
fantasy zone
kenseiden
golden axe warrior zelda clone For sale not in my condition and therefore not part of the collection unfortunately since basicly it was a free game .
-
I have a complete NA SMS set and a complete NFS set.
-
I started collecting for the Master System about two years ago and had upwards of 40 games for it, now I've sold most of them off and only own 14 games that I'd like to keep. I guess it just wasn't for me. I much prefer the Mega Drive
-
I collect for it as well. I never had one as a kid either. I have played a few of it's games back in the day on a friend of mine's, via the Power convertor for the Genesis, including the original Phantasy Star.
Too bad my system is not working very well anymore...so I can't play my games. :-\
-
I wanna say growing up I always thought the Master System was an import console, like I didn't understand that it was actually released in NA until I was already an adult.
-
I used to collect for SMS a few years ago before all the prices tripled. I tend to be quite thrifty when it comes to purchases.
