I would say Ms. Pac-Man, I think, it's pure and simple with nothing more or less than I really want from a video game.

I suppose if I had to pick just one, I'd probably pick The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Earthbound. It doesn't matter how many times I replay it, I'll never get bored of Earthbound.

Today (since this is subject to change at any time), I'm going to say Contra.  There's no telling how many times I've defeated the Vile Red Falcon.

You're reffering to the NES one?

You bet.  The SNES, DS and Genesis ones are fun, but nothing tops the original.

Never good with just picking one, but I'd probably either say the original Zelda on NES or Ocarina of Time.

Both are good games.  Link to the Past is certainly the improved, better, game, but I still really like the original.  Played it so much.

Kingdom Hearts II takes my number 1 spot every time.

I go back and forth between Pokemon, Cave Story, Uncharted and Sly Cooper for the #2 spot.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Finally got it on the 3DS VC, since my NES died I've been unable to play it. It's the reason why I've got the collection that  I do.

Like burningdoom, mine is also Super Metroid, oh man I Just beat Bayonetta for the first time a couple days ago, fucking fantastic game cant wait for the sequel. Id also have to say the Contra and Metal Slug games as well. I know it's just your top game ever but it's hard to choose

Can't pick just one.  It's probably somewhere between Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy X, Dark Cloud 2 and Super Metroid.  Or possibly another of the many worthy candidates that I can't think of at 4:00 in the morning.  ;)

Interesting choice for a close second. :P I didn't expect that game to pop up in this thread. While on that topic, I believe that a physical release is planned some time in the future for Goat Simulator. Yaay physical releases. ;D

My go-to answer is usually Asteroids.  Its simple, fun and quick to play.

Close 2nd place games would be Castlevania SOTN and Resident Evil 4.

More than 7 and 4?

Yep. I really enjoyed 7 and 4 was a good game but I think it comes down too is that I played VI at just the right age. I was around 11 at the time it came out so I had tons of free time to play it. It was really my first RPG that I remember playing. I just have really fond memorys of the game and its my go to game for when I'm feeling down. When 7 came out a few years later I had started getting into music (playing clarinet in the school band and learning guitar and bass and just listening to new stuff)and that was taking up more of my life at that point so I did not sit down and play it for long periods of time and bond with that game. 4 I didn't play until i was an adult so I'm not sure if I've even gotten through that one.

Gotta go with oblivion.  Played hundreds of hours and never came close to beating all of it and played on tons of characters.  Never had as much fun with anything or had fun for as long as with oblivion.  Don't know why they made such a big deal about skyrim just a dumbed down version of oblivion.

Super Mario Sunshine. For some reason, that game holds the most memories from when I was a kid, plus I liked some of the differences in enviornment and gameplay changes compared to other games in the series. In addition, its also a very glitchy game at some points, which is great to exploit with some friends. Plus, water.
Title: Re: Your number 1 game of all time?
Post by: burningdoom on July 18, 2014, 09:43:25 pm
Oh man, those last 3 posts had some great choices!

Super Mario Sunshine was a blast to play. It felt like a better 3D Mario game than Super Mario 64 did to me, SM64 was just too big and empty for me. And the controls are infuriatingly touchy. SMS is also just a gorgeous GameCube game.

SW: Battlefront is just mass chaos unleashed upon the Star Wars Universe, and I love it!

And Oblivion is my 2nd favorite game of all time, right after Super Metroid. I 100%ed achievements on it, beat the main-quest and all guild quests, Shimmering Isles story, and The Knights of the Nine storyline. I feel, even after exaustively playing Morrowind and Skyrim as well, that Oblivion is the greatest Elder Scrolls game.

I'm with Turf on this one, in that my favorite game of all time would probably change over time and I cannot give a definite number one.  But at this day and specific time, my top would be a tie between

*  Shenmue 2

*  The Legend of Zelda (NES)

*  Super Mario Bros. 3

*  All Generation 1 Pokemon games (Blue, Red and Yellow)

Morrowind was a very good game, but oblivion implementing the difficulty scale with level in such a seamless way is still revolutionary IMO.  Also the biggest difference between morrowind and oblivion that I like better with oblivion was quest tracking.  Some people enjoy hunting for people throughout an entire city or just guessing on where a dungeon may be and spend a long time searching, but I get way too frustrated :p  And Skyrim was also a good game, but too easily taken advantage of.  Once you can enchant your own armor with high level enchants you can stack % damage with certain weapons on your whole armor set and even on hardest difficulty I could kill dragons in a few hits.  For a while its a good game just had too many ways to make yourself too strong.  Also loved magic in oblivion, but the having a spell in each hand thing in skyrim made it a pain to do.  Also it is very weak compared to any warrior or rogue or whatever with the damage enchants on armor.

Morrowind was too copy and paste. I enjoyed the Hell out of it when it came out, it's what made me buy an XBox. But it's hard to go back to now. Not saying Oblivion isn't somewhat guilty of this, either, but not nearly to the degree of Morrowind. And those damn Stilt Striders!!!

I'd be tempted to say Mario Brothers 3 is my all-time favorite games but I would actually say Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for pc is because it has an amazing story, atmosphere, and characters.  The music is fantastic.  It has multiple endings and choosing different bloodlines of vampires really does change the gameplay for each playthrough.  The game has some small flaws and it is very punk and goth so not for everyone but it is a very memorable game and one I always want to go back and play.

Yeah I am definitely going to be picking up the physical release.  I fell in love with the game the moment I heard about it, everything about the game is absurd and that is what makes it great.  I have put in 30 hours, but I can always go back and find something new to do.  About a week ago I had an NPC pool party and dragged as many NPCs into the pool as I could and then blew up a car and set them all on fire underwater.  Other times I will go on rescue missions to save people drowning in the river by making platforms in the water with chairs. I also like to see how far I can launch people off of the half pipe ha.  If that is not awesome enough you can unlock a playable shopping cart!
tl;dr Goat Simulator is awesome

If we are going by time played and understand of the mechanics.... I'd unfortunately have to say World of Warcraft... However there are many more games that I enjoyed playing more than WoW. I'm going to have to say Suikoden or Final Fantasy IX for me.

Probably get some crap over this one, but besides FFXI the only game I've played more is Rockband.

Sometimes I just want to hear music and have a beer. It's a bonus that I get to play along with the tunes. It's also the only game my wife will play.

^ Nothing wrong with that.

I only have a couple Rock Band games, so I haven't gotten into that series, particularly, as much; but I do like the guitar games. I've torn through every Guitar Hero game except Aerosmith (not the biggest Aerosmith fan).

I'd lean more towards Guitar Hero, but Rock Band was a lot of fun too. The guitar controller for Guitar Hero was way better designed than the Rock Band controller though. The buttons and the strum bar in particular were way to mushy on the Rock Band guitar.

DOOM (I (& II) on PC)

This game will always be my number 1 game of all time, because it simply blew me away back then.
I'm still playing the first two games all the time. It's simple and raw, perfect for what it is and does.

The graphics and audio is burned into my eyes and ears. Moving through the game is just muscle memory ;)

Agree. I broke the guitar control for Rockband brand new after an hour. Rockband 2 guitar lasted about two hours. I haven't had an issue with my wired Guitar Hero 2 control ever.

Hated Rock band controllers.  I bought the bundle Rock Band at launch, very excited for it, and from the moment I picked it up, I knew it was a piece of utter garbage lol  Flismy, cheap, uggh it was so terrible.

Kingdom Hearts II - Final Mix ^_^

Not only does KHII improve on everything that made KH1 great, but it adds a bucket load of new functions and goodies, has beautiful graphics that still hasn't aged for a game released in 2005, better controls, and I would be here all day if I were to list it all xD

And if that wasn't enough, Final Mix II adds even more extra content........... like............. what more can you ask for??? 8D

While not my favorite game, I did love KH2 and I'm looking forward to the hd release in December on PS3. The combat was phenomenal, especially compared to the rigid combat in the first game. KH2 took all the fluidity of a game like God of War and added it to an amazing world (plus, I could make Donald and Goofy disappear in order to make myself more powerful).

As far as number 1 game of all time...that's a tough one honestly. I know my top 5, and I'm sure no one will be surprised by the list (well, maybe one of them).

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X
Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3
The Last of Us

I imagine it is pretty unoriginal, but I would probably have to say Final Fantasy VII as my number 1. While FFX is a very close 2nd, I don't know if I'd be as avid a gamer as I am now if I hadn't experienced FFVII when I did. It is the reason I love gaming and rpgs. I'm not going to pretend its perfect, but it will always hold a special place to me.

That being said, I'd like to give honorable mention to the .hack franchise. <3 Definately in my top 5 franchises.

I'd have to say one of my favorite games is also Final Fantasy VII.. but as far as the best find in my collection, it would probably have to be Dot Hack: Quarantine.
Is FF8 any good?
I personally like FF8. A lot of people don't, and I'm not too sure why. I mean sure, the main character is a bit anti-social, but he pulls it together later. There's enough going on to keep it from being boring. Another thing people didn't really like was the fact that you didn't get money from killing monsters, and that you couldn't really buy weapons, only upgrade them.. but it still works. I like FF7 better than FF8, but I like FF8 better than FF9.

The best thing about FF8 is how you can game the leveling system and completely break it :) I actually really enjoyed the story as well, and I would agree it is better than FF9.

On a side note, .hack//quarantine (and the rest of the franchise) is amazing.

I feel the same way about Kingdom Hearts. I had played quite a few great games prior to it, but Kingdom Hearts was the first time a story had spoken to me, a story with a main character who had an actualy personality and was somewhat relatable. I loved Sora's carefree attitude, though still being serious when need, and above all, his golden heart. He was everything I wanted to be, so I have lived by his example ever since :D

Unreal 1 (PC)

I like it when a game fully immerses you in its world and this for me was the first to fully achieve that. I'm no longer playing a game, i'm having an experience; like a vacation from reality. I never get tired of going back to the strange world, reading about the plight of the enslaved natives and the survivors of the crash. The music just adds to the utter absorption.
Plus there are so many mods from people who 'get' what the game is about which extends the experience far beyond the base game's length.

For arcade games I like Eyes. for the home consoles it would be...I may have to break it up by system. Atari 2600 Brezerk, NES Super Mario Bros.(i never get tired of playing it), SNES Donkey Kong Country, Famicom Devil World, and finally Famicom Disc System Vs. Excitebike. I don't really have a #1 for any of my other systems yet.

Oh man, I really want to agree but for me it's a draw between MGS 3 and Doom 1...
I guess Metal gear takes it since I can spend more time on it in one run

Today (since this is subject to change at any time), I'm going to say Contra.  There's no telling how many times I've defeated the Vile Red Falcon.

That is easily the game I've played through the most.  But for as much as it defined a big chunk of my childhood, I think I'm going to have to give it to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.  Unparalleled horror atmosphere, fascinating gameplay, excellent story telling and progression, perfect camera, absolutely incredible audio and music, and just all around amazing.

Eternal Darkness was Nintendo publishing and work with 2nd parties at their all-time best.  Pity it disintegrated so afterwards.

This is a hard one, because on one hand it'd be so easy to pick something like Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II, Quake 1 or Mario 64, all of which defined my childhood, but if I'm honest with myself ...

It's World of Warcraft.

I've played it on and off since release and I fully intend to play it again. I've always enjoyed it and now that Titan (Blizzard's next big MMO) got cancelled, I'm convinced the genre is dying out and WoW will simply never be matched.

It's nearly impossible to pick just one game :).  Super Mario Bros. 3, Final Fantasy 6, Xenogears, Dark Souls, Castlevania: SotN, Civilization 4, Shadow of the Colossus, Mega Man 2 are all games I play regularly and I can't see myself ever getting tired of them.  They all have impacted me in some dorky way and I think they're all still the gold standards of their respective genres.  The answer would be any one of those depending on which day of the week it was :).  I'd probably have to put a Rock Band/Guitar Hero game in there somewhere too as I've put countless hours into them.

What's the big deal with  Shadow of the Colossus? Not really seeing the appeal you just climb gaint stone monsters right? and click flashing buttons until it dies or something.

I guess If you look at it in a simplistic way... maybe but you're missing meat and potatoe which is everything else.

It's not a flawless game and I don't think any of the games I consider the best of the best are such.  Yes, that is more or less what you do, but SotC has some amazing strengths.  The overall design of the game, from the characters to the Colossi, is fantastic.  The fluidity in the character animation is still one of the best I've ever seen with the way your character sways and stumbles.  The minimalist plot is also huge boon as I find nearly all video game writing mediocre at best.  By only filling you in with the basics and letting you piece the story together in your head it ends up being a much more satisfying experience.

The downside is that the gameplay is a quite a bit on the easy side and it isn't like something like Dark Souls or Devil May Cry or other character action games where boss battles are tests of reflexes and skills but are instead (fairly simple) puzzles.  Once you figure out the puzzle (how to climb to the Colossus's weak point) the battle is pretty much over.

But all the positives far outweigh the negatives.  It's one of those games that's an "experience" which sounds like some pretentious cop-out but it truly is one of the most cinematic games I've played (also has a stellar soundtrack) and it deserves to be mentioned for it.  It's still a satisfying game but yet a totally different experience than, for example, beating some really tough final boss or getting a perfect score.

Well what about ico?

Well what about ico?

I think a lot of that applies to Ico as well.  Ico has better puzzles, but SotC trumps it in story, music and has better gameplay mechanics IMO.
