Title: We covered FAVORITE console, now how about the 1st console you bought yourself
Post by: gf78 on January 26, 2015, 11:04:01 am
Just for fun, what is the first console and games you purchased with your own hard-earned money?

Mine was the SNES back in 1991.  I was working as a cart pusher at the local Walmart and saved up enough dough with my eye on this prize.  Picked up the system that was bundled with two controllers and Super Mario World.  Also picked up ActRaiser and Super Castlevania IV.  I don't know if it was because the games were just that good or because I worked hard to save up that cash to buy that bundle, but all three of those games hold a special place in my heart and are burned into my brain.  That goofy world theme along with the flapping cape sound effect just pop into my brain randomly...pretty much on a daily basis.   ???

On a side note, another stupid videogame sound effect that "haunts" me is from the Atari 2600 game Pike's Peak.  Actually, the eagle attack sound, the bear "nugga nugga nugga" sound and that little intro diddy all haunt me.   :'(

The first system we ever had as an Atari 2600. It was my older sister's and was in her room. It never did hold my attention for long due to the repetitive arcade-style games, and I thought the graphics were terrible (the NES was out at this point).

When I was 7-years old we got an NES. Even though that was technically our 2nd system, that was the system that hooked me and made me a gamer. I started off with Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, The Legend of Zelda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Soldier, and Pin-Bot. Great spread of games to get going on! It was a Christmas gift from my mom and Grandpa for all of us (me, my brother, and sister). Still one of the best Christmas gifts to this day, and I'm 31 years old, lol. It instilled a love of gaming in me that I have to this day.

The first system I bought with my own money was a used Nintendo 64 back in 2008. My older brothers had one that I played as a very young child but when they moved out they took it. A few years later I had saved up about 70 dollars and was able to purchase a used console with Donkey Kong 64, a controller and an expansion pack.

I own tons of consoles but believe it or not, the first system I bough brand-new with my own money was the Wii U.

The first console that I bought with my own money was a second hand Sega Mega Drive 2 with a Mega CD 2. This was in 2003 I think. I had a Sega Mega Drive back in the day (91-94), that I got as a christmas gift but sold it in order to switch to PC

For me was the SNES Jr it took me a pain in the ass to purchase this one cause my parents never wanted to see me playing in front of the TV the whole day so every damn cent was obtained with a lot of sacrifice and work but damn I did enjoyed the only three games that at moment I owned, the rest were rented games, so many good memories are just coming back  :'(

I got my first job at Kmart in order to buy the Sega CD. It must have cost $300 at that time and I didn't work at Kmart too long, it was just during a holiday season. I imagine my pay was probably around $4/hour then too so most of the money I made must have gone to the system. There weren't many games available when I got it and full-motion video looked really cool so I bought Night Trap :-[

I never bought the Sega CD add-on, but at one point around that time, I picked up a JVC X'Eye...or something like that.  It was the Genesis and CD built into one unit.  Wish I had that baby now, I think they are worth a bit of money.   :(

That would be a Sega Dreamcast, for me. I got it with my first real job money, working at Blockbuster Video. I got it with Marvel vs. Capcom, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and Sega Smash Pack. And I played and supported that bad-boy until I got my XBox with Morrowind and Halo.

Unfortunately I had AOL at the time. And SegaNet just wasn't compatible with AOL. So I only got to experience SegaNet at my friends house. I usually played Quake III Arena and some motorcycle racing game that escapes me while I was at his house. Or I watched him play Phantasy Star Online.

LOL about AOL.  I know the feeling.  Up until about three and a half years ago, dial-up or satellite was my only internet option.  Both suck.  They finally started offering LTE here which works pretty well for online gaming so I can't complain too much.  I bought the Final Fantasy XI bundle for the PS2 DAY ONE.  After doing updates for what seemed like two days...well, it WAS TWO FRIGGIN DAYS...I played the game for about 12 hours and figured out I didn't really like it.   >:(

If I really think about it, the first actual game system I ever bought was a Gameboy. It was the original one, but green colored. It came in a clear plastic shell and I had Tetris and SMBW.

Mine was a Gamecube, and it was between my Freshman and Sophomore years of college.

I'll never forget it, because my mom said something to my grandmother right after I bought it that I've always remembered. "When she was 8, I bought her a Nintendo and said she'd grow out of it. When she was 10, I bought her a Super Nintendo and said she'd grow out of it. When she was 14, I bought her a Nintendo 64 and said she'd grow out of it. Now she's almost 20 and buying these things for herself. I guess she's not going to grow out of it."

Wow...that kinda hits home.  My mom always said the same kind of stuff to me about my games, music tastes, etc.  When I was around 10-11, I started listening to Iron Maiden.  My mom would say "You don't like that music.  You think you like it because other people do."  Well mom, hate to break it to you, but I've been listening to Iron Maiden for the last 30 years.   8)

That's great.  ;D

I think the first system I bought myself was a Saturn...sadly. :P It had a handful of good games, but was largely a waste of money. My second one was a PSX, and that was a much better purchase. ;)

I got a Wii back in at the very end of November 2006 when it was released.  People were snatching them up as fast as Nintendo could produce them.  It was my day off on a Sunday and I had to pick a few things up at Walmart.  As I always do, I moseyed down the game aisle and lo & behold...two Wii's they just put on the shelves.  A quick call to the misses to confirm it was ok (you non-married folks will find out what this is like someday!) and out I went with a new Wii and Zelda Twilight Princess.

It was really just dumb luck that I happened to be at the right place at the right time.

Maybe "Have you ever camped out for a console release before?" should be a future question. I camped out for a Wii, while family members made fun of me because it released the night of the Ohio State University/University of Michigan game and that is a sacred day where I'm from.

That Christmas, they were all asking where they could find one, and I believe my (snarky) response was "in line, with me, over a month ago".

Mine was also the GameCube. It was pretty late in the system's life. I think it was the Mario Kart Double Dash bundle. After that I purchased a used Dreamcast, a PS1 and than my Wii. Been collection games and systems ever since  ;D

Got a lot to still get. Right now I have:

NES
SNES
N64
GameCube
Wii
Wii U
Saturn
Dreamcast
PS1
PS2
PS3
PlayStation TV
Xbox
Xbox 360

And a number of handhelds ...

I play most of my classic games on the Retron5. It works fairly well, and I like that I can put translation patches on imported games.

I buy the majority of my systems used so there hasn't been true feeling of buying something brand new. If it counts I recently picked up a Retron 5 at launch. I remember counting down the days until they shipped it (If you've been up to date with Hyperkin, you know that was another story of it's own. Which ment that I had to wait a year before my pre-order went in.) Overall I was very satisfied after the 4th delay to get the console I have been waiting for. With a small collection like mine I don't have any problems with compatibility issues with the exception of 3 games, although I wish they would still fix that as well as some of the bugs. Any who it was a defining moment I won't forget.

I've only done it the one time, cause after that, I realized that consoles really don't have games for a good year or two afterwards lol I do midnight launches for video games cause it can be fun sometimes to hang out at the Gamestop with others since they usually have something to play there, but I'm done with console launches, though I'm in the best place for it being Florida where it's never usually that cold aside from a few times during the winter lol

The first time I spent my own money on a console it was buying my own Dreamcast, because the one we had in the house was being hoarded constantly to feed someone else's Fantasy Star Online addiction. Bought it for about $65 at KB Toys when they were clearing them out. Unfortunately I was too stupid to really buy any games with it, because I was convinced just burning games was the way to go.

so dumb, so dumb, so dumb, soooo!!!

The first console I ever bought myself was the N64, still have the receipt too. I had to own that console, I forget what games I bought with it, but I think it was GoldenEye and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

The first handheld I ever bought myself was a Clear Game Boy Pocket. But that was with Birthday money or something, so I don't really count it as "my own money".

I bought my first NES when I was 19 in 1988. Sold it a year later and bought a Turbografx-16 in '89, which was the only system I bought at launch.

Now if I add older computers into the mix, then the winner would be the Tandy Color Computer 3 I bought myself at launch in 1986

My PlayStation 2.

I traded in about $50 worth of CDs for $300 credit at a semi-local FYE (back when they had good trade-in values), and got a system, a memory card, a Guitar Hero II set and a bunch of other games.

I know, it's almost sinful.

I  haven't come across a good one out in the wild yet. I guess I could buy one on ebay, but I kind of like the thrill of the hunt. That being said, I do have a Retron 5 which allows me to play Mega Drive games. In fact, it plays a crap ton of games and they look great on my HD TV. The controller sucks, but you can plug up the original controllers. Best part is, it plays imports and supports translation patches. It's open the door to a whole new world of RPGs I missed out on ... where to start!?!?!

The first console I bought was a Super Nintendo, with allowance I saved. I got lucky, and came across a garage sale which had the system w/ all hook-ups and about 20 games, all for $25.

After that I started collecting.

Before that I owned a Nintendo NES and NES Mini.

Now I own:

Atari 2600
Nintendo
Super Nintendo
Nintendo Gameboy Color
Nintendo 64
Nintendo Gamecube
Nintendo Wii
Nintendo 3DS
PlayStation
PlayStation 2
PlayStation 2 Mini
PlayStation 4
XBOX
XBOX 360 & Kinect

I feel like an ass for getting rid of my Genesis...

If we're only counting money we earned and not money we were given, mine was a PSP.
I'd wanted one for ages so I could play Dissidia, not long after starting my first job I got a PSP for free, I used my first pay to buy some PSP games but it turned out the PSP wouldn't read games, so I used my next pay to buy a new one.
Didn't end up playing it much but there's something really fun about collecting for it.

If money we were given counts then I bought a SNES and Saturn at the same time using money I was given for my birthday a few years ago. Got them from a retro game shop that used to be in town, me and my friends from college were regulars so he knocked the price down for me. Good times.  8)

The first console that i bought with my hard earned money was the Playstation 3 on 2007 with the game of "The Darkness". I don't know if that is one of the reasons that i consider the darkness as one of the best and more intense games that I've ever played. And i'm playing games since the NES.

First system I bought with my own money (earned from a job - so I'm not including birthday cash or anything) was the N64.

Within a few weeks I bought the Playstation.

I had been rocking my SNES up until then and had been working for a few months and decided instead of saving my money for a car it was going to video games!

I was so upset because I had saved up my money and then realized that I had to buy a memory card too!!! At least I knew up front for the Playstation that I was going to need one.

I had a SNES that was handed down from some friends when they got a 64, and then my parents bought me a PS2 for Christmas, but the first system I bought on my own was my 360. Got it about 2 months after I got my first job. it was the first thing I saved up for. I bought it with Gears of War which I ended up hating, lol.

first I bought myself....hmmmm

I think it was an Atari 5200 from a garage sale when I was 16. I think I paid $10 for it, two controllers and about 12 games back in the early 90's. I remember riding my bike and picking up games and consoles. This is when I first started collecting video games. I recall having the console in a bag hanging off my bike handle and the games, hook ups and controllers in my backpack. before that I had an Atari 2600 and an Odyssey 2 as gifts. I got the Colecovision and Intellivision not long after the 5200, then got an NES and a SMS a little after that from garage sales cheap. The SNES and Sega Genesis I got as Christmas gifts from my family. I remember buying a Sega CD and 32X from a pawn shop.

First system I recall buying brand new myself was the Playstation, I got it when it first came out. First system I bought near launch. You know out of all the systems I mentioned here, The Playstation in the only console I don't still own the original system. The first one I bought started to not read disc's after a six months and I remember exchanging it for a new one.  :P

My first system that I bought myself was probably a used Jungle Green Nintendo 64, back when the Wii was still young.

The first system that I bought myself and that was current-gen was a used Playstation 3.

The first brand-new current-gen was my Playstation 4. Wow, that just made me realise how much more special that PS4 is  :o

The first system I bought myself with my own money I earned was my Nintendo DS Lite. It was super satisfying to finally be able to buy something with my own money. It's gotten a lot of use over the years with Pokemon and Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest IX is probably still my favorite DS game and one of my favorite games of all time.

I first one i bought my self was a used 2600, since it was the first one I ever played when I was in 1st grade. I found it at Videogames then and now After some people at Game Stop told me about the place. That as about 5 years ago, and that got me back in to collecting games and buying systems.

Growing up, I had three consoles; an APF TV Fun (a Christmas gift from my grandparents to my father), an Atari 7800 (purchased new to replace a game console damaged in a flood) and a Sega Master System (purchased by my parents at a garage sale as a gift for me). The first console I purchased with my own money was also brand new - Sega Genesis. Almost everything after that was purchased at garage sales and such, with the exception of the Dreamcast (open box special at Sam's Club and Christmas gift from my parents), Gamecube, Wii, and PS2.

The first one I bought myself was a Wii back in 2007/08, can't quite remember which. Pretty exciting to start buying consoles by myself, but I do miss the feeling of being surprised by one as a gift :P

The first console I bought myself was the original XBOX back in 2003 after I finished high school and got a job. I later bought a GC and a PS2, which I played more, haha.
