Title: Return of the Plastic Instruments (Guitar Hero/Rock Band)
Post by: kamikazekeeg on February 24, 2015, 02:53:44 pm
I know the plastic instrument rhythm genre wasn't always the most well regarded thing when it was out and it had problems due to Activision milking the shit out of Guitar Hero, but I loved both Guitar Hero and Rock Band.  I put so much time into them both from the very start.  Well it looks like we are about to see them return.

Rock Band started to release brand new DLC for the series after dropping it and they've been testing the waters with surveys, leading to the likely return of it.

Guitar Hero seems to be doing the same with something more definite, as it is being said that Guitar Hero will be shown off at E3 and released later in the year.

http://www.destructoid.com/reunion-tour-new-guitar-hero-reportedly-in-development-288131.phtml

I still think these are crazy fun and it would be nice to make a return.  My only issue might end up being they'll make these games only for the PS4 and Xbone.  I don't own either right now and I'm sure Wii U will be the odd console out if they are focused on just current gen systems.  I also worry about whether Activision will handle the series better or not.  Keep the releases to one a year, have a robust DLC schedule, and it'll be just fine.

I would love to see Rock Band return. I still play the shit out of Rock Band 2 and have been on the look out for a decently priced copy of 3 and a Keyboard. If they released a new Rock Band and made it compatible with the old instruments, I'd buy it. Hell, I might even spring for an updated Drum Kit if they come out with a new one.

I can't imagine how they'd make the old ones compatible.  The last one was wireless to the 360 and I don't believe 360 controllers work on the Xbone, do they? Same for the PS3 to the PS4, I'm pretty sure those don't work either.

And I still pop in Guitar Hero and Rock Band every so often.  Got two guitars and a drumset still.

Also this opens the possibility of me finally getting that Guitar Hero: Megadeth I always wanted :D

PS4 would be possible, since they ran off of those usb wireless dongles - would just have to have drivers for them. Whether or not they'll do that is another question.

At any rate - my body is ready. :)

I am all up for this. I love Guitar Hero and is probably one of the best party games ever (Alongside Mario Party). I feel that a dedicated Guitar Hero: Rush is needed

Rush has some great old songs that would be perfect for it.  Very partial to their 70's material.  Less about their 80's material aside from Moving Pictures.

My top band selection for a game would be Megadeth, Judas Priest, and probably Dio.  Years ago on the Scorehero website, I worked up setlists for all three games I think lol

Day 1 pre-order, right here!

I like the music games, too. I just picked up Rock Band 2, for cheap. And I own every single Guitar Hero except Aerosmith (never was big on them). So I welcome this.

As others have mentioned, I'd love if they could somehow be compatible with the old Guitar Hero and Rock Band "instruments". I don't really want to end up having to buy more of those silly plastic guitars that take up more space in addition to the silly plastic guitars I already have.

Rock Band is the only reason I still have my 360 still hooked up.  I really would hope they have a 360/PS3 option as I switched from PS3 to 360 with Rock Band 2.  Nearly all my DLC is on the 360 and I don't see how they could come up with a system to allow for not only having DLC authenticated across generational hardware but across different companies platforms as well.  I'd actually be OK with having to buy new instruments as most of mine have been put through their paces anyways.  But the DLC is kind of a deal breaker and I don't see how they can pull it off.

I think their best bet is to do what others have suggested and do another specialized version.  I think it would alleviate the feeling that all my DLC should be included.

This is the exact reason I still have my 360 hooked up too due to all the Rock Band and Guitar Hero DLC and Exports I have.  But yeah, there's no way they'd be able to do something like bringing DLC from the 360 or PS3 onto the new hardware.  A bummer, but that's not something I'd expect to happen anyways.  I'm fine with getting a new guitar though.  It's been almost 5 years since I bought my last one with Warriors of Rock, so getting another isn't a big deal at all.  I'd like to see if they could further improve on the guitars also.  In particular, Rock Band always had the most garbage guitars.

I filed out that survey they emailed out. Would love to see a new version. Still play Rockband 3 when company comes over.

I too would hate to have to buy all new songs again. Must have bought a couple hundred songs plus all the expansion discs. Hopefully some kind of song transfer is available. The problem with DLC...

I forgot about the Rockband guitar  :-\ I was always using the Guitar Hero control.

Regarding compatibility with instruments, I'd love to see Harmonix release something compatible with the Ion Drum Rocker. That thing is huge but Ronalopolis won't get rid of it because it's collectible and those other drum sets are a bit flimsy for someone who has actually played drums in the past. If we could just get another brain for it, that would be awesome. (They sold it with the ability to get brains for other consoles back when it was originally released, so I think it would be possible, if not cost effective.)

I'd also love to see a way to play my Beatles guitars on a new system, but I think that's much less possible, since there were 360 and PS3 versions originally.

Once I got Rocksmith and plugged in a real guitar I lost all interest in learning to play a plastic phoney.

But the drums and vocals I still enjoy.

Two completely different things.  One is a learning tool, the other a rhythm game.  I like what Rocksmith does and I'll probably pick up Rocksmith 2014 eventually, but Guitar Hero is far more fun.  It's a party experience and is much more carefree.

I agree. Part of the reason I fell out of love with guitar hero and rock band was because Rock band in particular reminded me I have no friends in real life. ;)

At least not ones that want to come to my house to play rock band or guitar hero.

But learning to play the guitar. I can do that at home alone and take the skils I learn from it anywhere. :)

The problem is the system you have it on.  I was a 360 player last gen.  All my music is on that.  I'm never buying an Xbone, and I don't think they'll do some sort of cross transfer thing.  My idea I had was like a website thing connected to your gamertags, no matter the platform.  I input my 360 gamertag, it registers what music I have, it then unlocks it for transfer, and then inputting what would be my PS4 gamertag, and it transfers it that way, but I think this is completely farfetched lol

Also, they are looking at a way to make your old instruments usable on it.  My guess, through a cord or USB wireless receiver or something.  Handy, but again, 360 gear I can't use lol

I do like what they are talking about with the game, how they are stripping it back down and looking to give it more of its unique identity.  Gone are pro modes and the keyboard.  Pretty stoked for the game.  Gonna pop in Rock band 3 tonight I think lol

Another example of why digital sucks. But then if it were on disc, neither PS4 or XBox One is backwards compatible either, so I guess it wouldn't matter.

I'm not going cross platform, so I'll be in the clear. I'm guessing the DLC will just follow the gamer tag. Wonder if all the disc transfers will carry over as well Rockband 1, 2, track packs etc.

The keyboard was kinda a waste anyway, not many songs had large parts if at all.

The best part of the game is hearing new songs you wouldn't normally listen to. I liked the Ida Maria song on Rockband 3, then I heard it in the movie "It's Kind of a Funny Story", it "pinned a smile on my face"  ::). I can already see my Living room getting taken over by this game  8)

Man...MAN! This was not a good reveal for Guitar Hero.  I'm not against them changing everything, I'm totally cool with that, but I just can't behind the new gameplay style and presentation with live action video. I guess I just need to see what expert level looks like, cause the new 6 buttons stacked on each other seems weird and easy, or could be overly complicated.

https://blog.activision.com/community/games-blog/guitar-hero/blog/2015/04/10/guitar-hero-live-revealed-coming-this-fall-2015

About the only good thing is that it's going to be on next gen, and last gen, including Wii U.  Not much announced for music either, but all the modern pop and rock and freaking Skrillex reminds me of how poor Band Hero was lol

Yeah, I actually like some Skrillex and would be stoked if they announced a DJ Hero 3 that included some of his stuff - but Guitar Hero? ???

Anyway, I'd be REALLY curious to know if this game has been in the works for a while, or if they caught wind of a new Rockband coming & decided to throw this together. What with the FMV, it feels like the latter.

If anyone does plan on picking this up tho, Best Buy is offering a $10 store credit if you preorder it.

I'm gonna have to play it first before I buy it.  I saw a "Hard" or now "Advanced" play through of a song and I wasn't very excited by it.  The two colors of white and black switching to me didn't seem all that great, had trouble focusing on the change while I'm playing and I don't like that you basically are dropping the pinky use.

It also seems to me that it would be very easy to accidentally hit the lower buttons when you are hitting the upper ones.

I feel it is gonna get problematic on the Expert difficulty, where it's gonna be hard to differentiate the buttons.  Having to learn a whole knew way of playing makes it feel like it won't be great for returning players at all.  Might be refreshing, but I'd rather have the normal 5 button layout like Rock Band 4 will have, so hopefully that turns out right lol

So are all songs going to be available through download? Or do you a few gigs worth of songs on the disc to begin with, like normal?

If you get songs on the disc, I'm in. But if it's only available through download/subscription service, forget it. Freaking everyone wants me to subscribe to some digital something. It's getting out of hand.

Pretty sure there's on disc content, but some (or all?) of the DLC might be through a streaming service perhaps. I don't really know, I can't imagine they wouldn't have regular DLC to buy.  I mean it is a full priced game, so it would have to have its own content.

I now realize after reading my post how it sounded.

I didn't mean a few "gigs" as in gigabytes. That's a lot of music. I meant a few "gigs", because the previous Guitar Hero broke-up song lists into separate live-events, or gigs.

Rockband yes, Guitar Hero no.

Support for peripherals you've already purchased, even those from the competitor's games?

Rockband yes, Guitar Hero no.

Sadly it's looking that way.  I always liked Guitar Hero more, but I haven't seen them do anything good yet with the new game and the more I see and hear, it doesn't get any better.  I don't even mind having to buy a new guitar for it, but Rock Band is clearly trying to bend over backwards to keep its legacy and fanbase with them, going way above the call of duty (lulz, activision) to make last gen gear working on current gen hardware, when they didn't even need to.  That and the possibility of making DLC transfer also (I don't really expect them to find a way to make it so 360 players can have their DLC on a PS4, so I'm out of luck), just puts the game over.

As much as I've always preferred Guitar Hero, it looks like I'm going to go with Rock Band this generation. I don't like too much of what I've seen so far with the new Guitar Hero stuff, so this is pretty good news to me.

Wow, most people I know prefer Rock Band - surprised so many of you are GH people. GH isn't bad, but IMO wherever Harmonix goes, there goes the real talent.
