Title: Games that beat YOU!
Post by: dashv on August 12, 2015, 11:42:59 pm
Many of us like to talk about the games we've beaten.

But what about the games that beat you?

It could be anything from Nintendo hard and you just gave up, to a game breaking glitch that ended your reign. Heck we'll even count lost, deleted, corrupted saves that screwed your game over so bad you just said "to hell with it!" and never went back.

C'mon vgcollectors. Spill. What's games have beaten you!?

One game instantly came to mind for me.

Ghostbusters II (NES): Being as it was one of the earliest games I purchased for my NES, I played this a ton and perfected all of the stages up until the Statue of Liberty section.  I usually had enough lives stocked to barely make it through that section and then would instantly die on the last level every single time.  Couple that with the fact that there is no pause button and I eventually gave up on the game after a week or so of constantly playing.  I have not played that game since then and have no desire to.

Wizardry 1 almost beat me when I died at the final boss in one round due to an extremely unlucky random event.  I had spent months creating parties, hand drawing dungeon maps, taking every permadeath loss no matter how unfair, and then it all ended with a cheap shot.  I planned on never playing again, but when I woke up the next day I was so pissed that I leveled a new party all day and beat the game ha. Now I'm a wimp and play with save states :P (Wiz IV not included).

I really love Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but I could never finish it more than once. And in the fine G'nG tradition that means you didn't actually finished it if you did not play through it twice.

When I rebought it recently I could not even get past the third stage. I don't even think I'm that bad as a gamer, I get along with the tougher platformers on the SNES just fine. But this game is crazy hard, even on easy!

There were a lot of those old NES games that I could never beat.  I remember Battletoads being nuts, Ghouls N' Ghosts being tough, there was kind of a bunch cause some of those old games were just stupid hard lol

More recently Dragon Balll Xenoverse almost beat me cause it was gonna get to the point I was gonna have to grind for 5 to 10 hours to try and overpower the story mode, but thankfully I realized I could just cheese out the enemies by going Super Saiyan 2 and spamming a powerful area attack blast that allowed me to take out large chunks of health with each blast.  I hate having to beat a game like that, but when they force me to grind on their annoying side missions with annoying AI and annoying combat, I'm gonna take the path of least resistant and rely on the cheapest move I can find lol

Section Z for the NES.  No matter how long or hard I tried, I never could get very far.

Ghosts & Goblins, Ghouls & Ghosts and any other game in that series.  Hellaciously hard stuff.  I remember playing the first NES release and getting killed about 20 times by Firebrand in the first level!   >:(

Demon's Souls.  I got super pissed at this game early on and just quit it altogether.  F this game!

X-Men by LJN on the NES.  Just gotta love how your mutant powers "run out" after two pew-pew shots.  The characters look like melted gumdrops sloshing around and the game was a physical manifestation of hell sent to torture younglings who loved the comics.

I've got quite a few that just suck and I don't play them.  I do have a shitload of NES games, after all.  That said, there are a few good games that have me beat down.

I still can't beat Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
I've been playing the game for nearly 30 years.  I love it.  It's one of my favorites, but I've never beat Iron Mike.

The original Assassin's Creed on the PS3 beat me with boredom. Never finished it and likely never will.

I gotta agree with this one, the first one was so repetitive. I remember mid game, I stopped playing. The only reason I went back to beat it was cause AC2 was announced and decided to go back and beat it. That was such a grind.

Mega Man and Bass is one of the most arbitrarily difficult games I've ever played, to the point where I wanted to throw my Game Boy out the window.

Bubsy 3d remains to this day the only game i have ever returned for my money back. Whats worse about it was it was so un-memorable to me that i cannot remember anything about it without looking up images or videos about it. I think I only played it about 10-20 mins.

It's a shame it had to be that way, since I was having fun with it for what was probably around the first half of the game. Eventually, it just stopped being fun and I gave up.

I mentioned this some time ago.

Sly Cooper 1, last boss.

If you die you have to restart the whole thing. It takes five minutes to reach a point where you can hurt him. I gave up after two hours.

I haven't played any game in the series since. (And my PS2 is dead anyway, so.)

I actually have this one on my wish list just because it is so horrible.  I avoided it like the plague back when it was a current title.

I would really like to start a mini-collection of some of the worst games in history.  I already have Kabuki Warriors.  I figure Bubsy 3D and Superman 64 should be my next picks.   :P

You can pick up the Sly Collection on PS3 dirt cheap if you look around.  That is, if you want to give it another go.

For the longest time now, I have been trying to play through a Pokemon randomizer nuzlocke.

It's like a regular nuzlocke challenge (1. You can only catch the first Pokemon you find in an area 2. Once a Pokemon faints, you have to release it) but with a lot of variables randomized by a ROM patch. I have it so the wild/trainer's Pokemon, held items, movesets and abilities are completely random.

So for example, in my most current game of Emerald version, my starter was a Poliwhirl, with Inner Focus as its ability, and it knows Bind, Astonish and Twineedle. I just caught a Cacnea on the first route for my first caught Pokemon  :D

It's incredibly fun and addicting, but pretty much impossible to beat. I've maybe gotten 6 badges at most, after 20+ tries. I will often play in spurts and then have to put it down because it becomes so frustrating sometimes.

EDIT: Also add pretty much every arcade game I ever tried to play too

Some of Capcom's arcade titles, like Ghosts n Goblins+ Ghouls n Ghosts. I have cleared the first loop of each game, but i couldn't manage to get past 2-2 in the Ghosts, and 2-4 in Ghouls without losing my lives.  Metal Slug 4 makese me lose my lives after the first few stages because of the really poor enemy placement and level design that makes the game unfair compared to the rest of the series.

I was almost beaten by Super Monkey Ball 1 and didn't go back to it for about 10 years until a year ago. I finally managed to beat all of the expert levels and with enough practice I should be able to unlock master. The main difficulty of expert is compared to 2, the difficulty is really uneven with levels like Expert 7 being too difficult, and Expert 25 being way too easy.

I own Bubsy 3D.

I'd have to buy a PS3 first, eh? :p I don't really 'game' on TVs anymore, my TV is a very old SDTV, and I refuse to sign up for a regional Sony account that will rarely see the same sales as in the US, so there's no point. :(

Tales of Symphonia came close back when it was first released on the Game Cube. I learned the hard way that you should never trust a third-party memory card. Otherwise, your save data that had your team's levels in the 80s with fantastic equipment, lots of Titles, lots of progress made in their cooking, lots of just about EVERYTHING will go kaput. : D ---- X_X

Oh god you just made me super paranoid again and reminded me to buy a first party Gamecube memory card! I have had the same third-party (madcatz at that... definitely not the most reliable third-party) card ever since my original Gamecube and I'm very afraid to lose everything eventually  :-\ I bought a 1024 blocks on ebay last year, only to realize that it would always corrupt even though the seller mentioned it was in working condition  >:( I haven't tried getting another card since, I should get like 3-4 of the 256 blocks ones...

The Bionic Commando reboot on Xbox 360..I have the save still, but only rented the game years ago. Got stuck at a part where there's a lot of enemies and I had hardly any ammo or health. So I gave up :P

I just showed up here to see if Yakov Smirnoff had started this thread. You know, "In mother Russia, the game beats you!"

No game has ever beaten me, I just took a break from them , that's all. I'll be back.

They still make lots of other stuff too, like gaming mice and keyboards. I do believe they're also making the plastic instruments that come with Rock Band 4. They don't make as much cheap crap as they used to.

Also Shadow of the Beast, anyone? Yeah don't know what to do, dying, wandering around some more, die again, rewind- It's real fun (I still like the series aesthetics though, Psygnosis games had a very distinct style).

Could probably mention all the die hard point & click adventures that trapped you to instant death constantly without any chance of knowing in advance. Often tried those, hardly finished any of these.

-Sonic 2 (GameGear). Like a lot of people, I got stuck in the trap that is the very first boss. It's actually not hard at all and you hardly have to move to beat it, but something about it just makes people want to jump around and hit things. I think it's mostly because it's pretty much the only boss in the series (even up to present) that makes you fight it by being still with half the of the action happening just off screen. The second hurdle follows the first boss, you're required to use the hang-glider, but the game isn't clear on how to do that. The instructions in the manual are less specific than you think.

-Jak II. This game has a problem with sudden difficulties spikes that most people would call "unreasonable", mixed with sometimes unresponsive controls. Part of overcoming this is understanding what the game wants you to do, understanding what you're doing wrong and then hacking the controls.

Megaman and Bass tore me a new one, that game was so difficult to beat. I was even playing the SNES version, I can only imagine how much worse it would be with the GBA version.

I didn't check thoroughly through this post, but I'm surprised to not have seen E.T. listed here by anyone else.

What a crap game.  Wander around.  Hold the button to run.  Fall into pits that are just colored areas Hold button to raise head and levitate.  Get to top, immediately fall back down.  Find some sort of...something in a pit...guy in a trenchcoat nabs you.  Wander around for 30 seconds, some kid-I presume Elliot-grabs you and drags you back to the beginning.  Rinse and repeat.

Has anyone ever finished that game???

I did a few years ago. It's bad, but not as bad as people make it out to be. Honestly, I've played more frustrating modern games.
