Didn't they have a playable beta for Fable Legends? I know they were trying to tweak the balancing in the game since it was too difficult or not fun.

Beta was due some time this spring.
I wondered why this game had been in development for so long; you can only survive so many delays. Tbh I don't think there was much of a following behind the game.
Personally don't own an XONE currently but even if I did, I couldn't see myself playing this had it actually seen the light of day.
Real shame what happened with Fable. Fable was a great game; yeah it was short and linear but it laid the foundations for what could have been something special. Fable 2 built on that. So come Fable 3 I was expecting this massive open world action RPG title but instead it was Fable 2.1; it was a worthwhile play but a bit underwhelming.
Following 3, I expected a 4 but I was no longer confident the series would reach it's potential. Instead we get a Kinect game, a remake of the original and finally this multiplayer focused FTP game enters development.
Why not just make an open world Fable 4?! That's what we wanted.....
Tbf Kingdom's of Amalur brought the Fable blueprint farther than any Fable game ever did.
A real shame that it never reached its potential.
Not to say in a few years Microsoft won't farm Fable 4 out to one of it's developers when the nostalgia is at a high.

I could've sworn they had a beta, maybe they just had it playable at SDCC or E3. I remember people talking about playing the game, but maybe I'm crazy.
I'm kind of waiting for gf78 to jump in and talk about how MS is stupid for shuttering studios. I've honestly been waiting for the cancellation since I heard about the complaints about the balancing, and then they cancelled the multiplayer mode. Fable has gone downhill hard ever since the beginning. Ugh, Fable heroes and fable journey.

Perhaps there was a closed beta, I'm not sure.
I blame Microsoft. Closing the studio is fair enough as it's producing muck these days. However I blame MS for the downfall. Fable 3 was too similar to Fable 2 as Lionhead were given less time to produce the game. Then suddenly they're reduced to making a Kinect game like so many other studios.
Should have just let Lionhead be Lionhead; take their time with fable 3 and do it right. Make Black and White 3. That should have been their future; not Kinect titles, arcade titles and FTP games.

He left when fable the Journey was complete; though I think he had minimal involvement with that title anyway.

In my eyes, just further proof that Xbox One will be the last Xbox console. Microsoft is steadily moving toward being a service rather than hardware. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Halo series land on the PS5 and Nintendo-whatever-majig next generation.

lol I was waiting for this. From what I'm hearing, MS's plan is for this to be the last Xbox console, what with their plan for extendable hardware. Think... 32X... lol

I really didn't even want to delve into the "extendable hardware" nonsense because that's just what it is: Nonsense. It kinda-sorta worked for the N64 with the Expansion Pak, but that was simple. It was a little hatch on the top you opened, pulled out the dummy and put the memory pak into. Even with that simplicity, it was a fairly insignificant amount of games that required it and thus, few people actually bought it outside of it being included with a game like DK64. Sega's add-on legacy is one big bag of fail.
And for all the Microsoft supporters who naively believe a huge company like them has to know what they are doing, take a long look at the clusterf*ck that is Windows Phone and get back to me. I've never seen such ineptitude in handling a major product. They half-ass support the thing, then buyout Nokia's hardware division for an ungodly sum of money. So you would think, "Man, MS is going to really hit the smartphone market with guns blazing!" Nope. They continue to trickle out half-assed phones of varying levels of middle-of-the-road specs.

Yup and now they are trying to revive GFWL with their Windows Store Windows 10 exclusive shyte.

Yup and now they are trying to revive GFWL with their Windows Store Windows 10 exclusive shyte.
I fully believe by the way they are releasing all their previously "Xbox One Exclusive" titles on the PC, they are going software/services only. They will release their new titles on the PC and offer a service like EA Access or whatever it's called for other consoles. I'm telling you, in the next five years we will see a Halo game on a competing console. They just basically scuttled two more studios so all we have left is what - Coalition, 343 and Turn 10? Oh...and the rotten, bloated husk that was Rare.

Sea of Thieves might turn things around for Rare. I know nothing about it and have no interest, but it is there.

Ehh...isn't it going the "free-to-play" download only route?

No big loss, IMO. I remember all the lofty promises they had for the original Fable, making it sound even better than Morrowind (at the time), and then the final product came out and it was far less open-ended then they promised. I couldn't help but be disappointed in the series.

I enjoyed the first two Fable games immensely. The third, not so much.

That's not true exactly.
Phil Spencer said he definitely hopes for another Xbox console in the future. And other members of the Xbox team have echoed that.
The whole expandable hardware thing was a recent comment; though tbf people seem to have short memories. In the infancy of both platforms; industry experts predicted that both Sony and MS might look to hardware upgrades as in this day and age they are quickly surpassed by the PC platform more rapidly than ever.
I expect another Xbox, but I do think that will certainly be the last one; whereas I don't think the PS5 will be the last PlayStation platform.

That would be great. But judging by Rare's last few games, I'm not holding out hope for anything special. All their talent fled after the Microsoft acquisition and it showed in games like Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo and Grabbed by the Ghoulies. Time will tell though.

I've heard that Kameo and Grabbed by the Ghoulies are good. Also, I've actually heard people say that PDZ is a good game if you only play multiplayer.

The multiplayer of PDZ was fun; the single player....not so much, but tbf FPS games had poor stories more often than not back then.
Kameo is a good 3D platformer; I completed it and I haven't really been into platformers for quite some time.
Heard good things about Grabbed by the Ghoulies too.
I'm no expert on Rare as I didn't own an N64 so I never played the titles of their golden era; Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day.
For me Rare will always be about Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct; and they'll never match them for me.
Was a shame that they got put on Kinect duty for a spell; but perhaps they can bounce back with this game.

Supposed to come out within the next 6 months. I care.
I liked Crackdown 1 and 2. I absolutely love destructable environments (Red Faction Guerrilla hnnnnnnnnnnng) so this Azure cloud computed destructible world sounds fantastic. so... :p

That's cool that you are into it. I was thinking more along the lines of the fickle masses. People used to play Mario games for years. In today's gaming and internet culture, things are quickly forgotten. So with the long development times that continue to drag on, will this game miss it's window of opportunity?
As well, the mass destruction you love will only be available in the online mode with the single-player mode having "limited destruction" according to Reagent Games and Microsoft.

I think MS has seen what Sony has in the pipeline and decided that they need better. So I imagine they're axing all the studios whose projects don't seem up to scratch, and would expect them to reinvest in some new studios.

This was sad news to me just because I see it as the true end to the greatness that was once Bullfrog Studios. Granted, I don't know that anything Lionhead ever made lived up to the best Bullfrog games, but part of the pedigree was still there at least.
Somewhere there's a parallel universe where Lionhead and Rare never got bought by MS, Midway didn't go under and Konami didn't go insane.

That's a nice sentiment.

In that same universe, Sony and Nintendo never had a falling out and are dominating the game industry.

Further news.
5 studios' logos have been removed from Microsoft Studio's website, as well as the logo for Project Spark.
Big Park, Function Studios, Good Science, LXP, and SOTA.
Just an update on this. Project Spark has officially been discontinued. Servers will shut down in the coming months.

What an atrocious company. Let's force Lionhead to make Kinect crap that doesn't sell. Then let's force them to make a free to play game and axe it before it even comes out and close the damn studio. Now let's cancel another game and fuck all, we aren't going to host the user created content anymore either! What does it hurt to keep that player generated content available for existing users? It doesn't!
Microsoft has a long history dating back to the first Xbox of scuttling studios, even if their games are successful. And it all began with the purchase and subsequent destruction of everything that was good at Rare. >:(

Allegedly the "Conker" game made for Project Spark is free, so that might be something to grab before the servers go down.
Also, allegedly several companies made offers to buy Lionhead studios and the Fable franchise before Microsoft shut it down completely, but Microsoft chose to decline all offers, presumably to prevent anyone else from making money on something they couldn't make money on.

According to the article I read, there's no longer anything to download unless you have your own user generated stuff on the servers. They ceased further downloads once the announcement was made about the shutdown but were offering refunds to those who had purchased the software.

This is just one more reason why I don't support Microsoft. They have a long, proven track record of unceremoniously cancelling games, services and support abruptly. Not to mention shoddy hardware. I guess they are putting all their eggs in the proverbial basket with Halo, Forza and Gears. But at this point just like Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed, these series are feeling severe franchise fatigue and sales have dropped more and more with each new release. Forza has turned into a complete cash-grab of DLC car packs and season passes, going so far as to put less cars in the newer games than before so they can charge for them! As for Gears, I don't think a new game was necessary. The story had a definitive end with 3. That should have been it. But now we have a "new" enemy that isn't the Locust....but just so happens to look exactly like the Locust. ::)
Is Microsoft even actively involved in any other 1st or 2nd party titles? Aren't the rest of their exclusives 3rd party paid titles? Oh wait...they have a Rare game that may get canned before it's even released.

Nah.
MS has put more effort in their games this gen, theres only like 5 total Gears/Halo/Forza games currently, and Sonys has done similar closures.
I think the real problem is that they usually don't give out reasons why they close studios and kind of move on leaving people to speculate what happened which sometimes makes people angry. Other usually don't do this. For example, Fable Legends is dead, why We know they closed down the studio for a reason but we were not even given a vague hint as to why that may be.
They have been doing it that way for years, at least give us something.

In case you guys haven't heard the latest reports of MS' douchebaggery, supposedly there were several big-name publishers lined up to buy Lionhead but MS refused to let go of the Fable IP, so they all passed.

I don't see....
How keeping their own IP is them being douchebags. I mean Fable 1-3 The Journey are MS games, and of course re-releasing them would be hard without owning the IP, plus they may revive it with a different studio/
If the only thing guys wanted form Lionhead out of buying them was Fable and not Black and White or anything, then I think the douches are actually the buyers.

In case you aren't following the Kickstarter thread.
Some ex-devs from Lionhead studios started up a new indie studio and have been granted use of the Fable license (presumably why Microsoft didn't sell the franchise) and have launched a kickstarter that just started a few minutes ago for this Fable card game.

I believe the only studio Sony has closed this gen is Evolution, the team behind DriveClub.
I don't really see how Microsoft has put more effort into their studios and 1st party games this gen than before. Besides Halo, Gears and Forza...what do they have? They have paid a couple of 3rd party develoers to make exclusives and that's about it. Rare hasn't released a good game in years so it's up in the air to see what happens with their new title. I'm not getting my hopes up.
