My pick is FF VII. Its such an amazing game don't get me wrong and I can understand why people love it. but a lot of people label it the best game ever made. Best RPG ever ect... I think I prefer VIII over VII. FF8 had a more deep and engaging storyline for me and superior character development. So in my opinion FFVII isn't even best in its series let alone best game of all time. Orcarina I have similar feelings towards. I acknowledge the importance and the greatness of OOT and I will never forget how it shaped and molded the Zelda franchise for the future but I cant seem to put it over WindWaker. I think WindWaker had much smoother controls and was on a better console and had more replay value for me. That of course doesn't mean these games suck by any means. Just that they get a tad too much praise or critical acclaim. What would you say is most overated game ever?

Look, Marv, I know you're pretty fresh to the site, your topics have been pretty interesting... but this one I want to go on record and say I'm sick of the "What's the most overrated game" topic, we already have a dozen of them on the forum and they always just make me miserable, it's an excuse to talk shit on every single franchise because you feel empowered to do so.
Here's my pick: Go ahead and pick out the game you cherish the most in life, the one piece of media which has molded your very being. That one, that's the game I detest the most, it's sinful and your pathetic for liking that piece of trash.
Just... it isn't cool, think of something more original. You had a good track record going there Marv.

It is taking every ounce of my self control at this point to not make a snide remark. And no, not at the OP. :-X Or kashell...though he knows what I am talking about.
And not indenton or matimo either.

Ha! The struggle is real. But taking the high road can feel good!
Or you can just preface with an "IMO" before you post.

I'm afraid the thread would get locked if I said more. I think I'll just wait until I get off work, go home and download a bunch of old games to run on my emulators. ;)

Earthbound: People act like it is the end all, be all RPG on the SNES, but from someone who has played most of them on the system, it is definitely bottom of the barrel, maybe mediocre at best. People like to say how unique and quarky it is, which I guess is true, especially for the time, but the graphics look slightly better than an NES game, the music is mostly not that great (with a few exceptions), and the story is pretty boring. Chrono Trigger, FFIV and FFVI, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Breath of Fire I and II, and Lufia are just a few RPGs that are better. Meanwhile, Earthbound gets treated like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Honorable mentions: Metal Gear Solid, Super Smash Bros Melee, Call of Duty (all of them)

How can you call smash melee an overated game while it is an excellent game that everyone praises.
It is the best in the series thanks to gameplay mechanics especially in the competetive scene.
It's the fastest smash game with the most things to master. It is really technical and it has way more variety than the standard 2d fighting games. You will actually need allot of skill to be really good at this game aside from allot of different things wich can happen during battle.
That cannot be said towards other 2d fighting games with the same combo's wich are used all the time.
It is also a game that is really addicting, one can spend litterally hours on this game even if one does not want to.
I will say this though that there are few games that can make you stay hooked so long as melee. Furthermore a nearly perfect game it cannot be called overrated.
The new Street fighter games are overated wich are garbage in my opinion.
Also if I'm honest you cannot call cal of duty and halo series overrated games.
Why not if you might task?
I personally don't like the games but they are the best in their series, they make people play them for litterally hours days weeks months's while doing nothing else. Furthermore there are allot of people who do this.
If a game does this to a large amount of people One cannot simple say that a game is overrated since there are plenty who want to play this game and find it great especially with game such as halo etc since those communities are pretty much the largest of them all and all hooked on them as addicts.
Seriously compared to those communities we are nothing, It's just your opinion that you don't like the game that much while plenty of others do. in my opinion if that's the case a game is not overated even though I'm not a fan of those series I have to admit that they are the best in their series it's fact. You cannot call those games overated if they are the best in that genre.

Melee is a fun game, in fact I'd definitely say it's top 5 Gamecube game hands down. The reason it is overrated is because of people treating like it's the perfect game. It isn't.
It's relevance in the competitive scene is based off a bunch of people finding control exploits that Sakurai himself condemned as being improper in regards to how the game was intended to be played. Essentially the competitive scene is made up of people who are trying to out-cheat the other person in order to claim victory. I don't call that a perfect game or a masterpiece, I call that a broken game. On top of that, the roster is heavily unbalanced, favoring heavily 4 or 5 characters that 80% of the competitive players use. Also, I find it hilarious that competitive players shun the use of items when last time I checked they are a key part of the gameplay. Seems to me that they should be included in so called competitive play, but maybe that's just me. Because of this, a lot of people act like this game is the best fighting game ever made when it doesn't even come close, at least as a game that is competitive by design.
As far as Melee's lasting appeal, it's entirely subjective. I for one enjoy playing it here and there, but have never felt like playing it for hours on end, at least not since around the time it first came out. I know many people who don't care for it at all. To say "everyone' praises it is a gross over-generalization.
Again, not shitting on this game, only pointing out why I claim it is overrated. Very fun game and is definitely one of the best game to sit down with people and play.

Competitive Players consider Melee to be 90% mental and 10% Tech Skill game, so it being "made up of people who are trying to out-cheat the other person in order to claim victory" would make sense, however just like you said it all subjective. Just because it doesn't fit the generic mold of a "2D Fighter" doesn't mean its broken.
Technically, it about 10 of them and there are plenty of low tier heroes in the competitive scene. The use of items did exist in early scene but overall was banned because it basically made it a game of luck.
Competitive melee is something you really enjoy or really dislike.
Take this with a grain of salt.

Nothing against it not being a traditional 2D fighter and that is not at all why it's broken imo. I believe it is broken because in order to be competitive one must become adept at exploiting the games controls in a way they were never meant to be used. Hence why the better you are at cheating (wave dashing and all the other so called competitive techniques) the more likely you are to beat your opponent who isn't as good as you at exploiting the game. That is what makes it a broken game and partially why the competitive melee scene isn't respected nearly as much as many other competitive gaming scenes. Scenes that are for the most part based around genuinely skilled players playing the game as it was intended and designed to prove they are better.
Yeah, items are random, but I believe a true test of skill is to be able to deal with any of those items as their user or as a person trying to defend against their use. I believe this is something that the Melee scene couldn't or didn't want to deal with so they decided to ban items instead.
What's sad is that underneath all the exploits is a very fun game that can still be played competitively, but unfortunately has been hijacked by people who feel otherwise. My opinion of course.

exploiting the game by methods wich were no natural for te game called cheating?
It does require allot of skill to master these methods and there are more and more people who master them
The way you say it it is like those cheats are really easy to use wich they are not. i can;t call it cheating if the opponent has all the info available for the start to master it. It;s just a matter of perfect timing and reading what your opponent might do in the next steps.
i don't see the point since everyone has these tricks available online how to do them. Not many people are good at mastering them in fact only the top 50 worldwide can do it pretty well.
i don't see the point even though it is not natural for the game everyone can use it and it requires allot of skill. Items are a luck factor you can't play with items some items are just way to OP.
-
You're not understanding what Biking is saying. He said being ready for items and their randomness takes just as much as skill as other aspects in Melee.
-

Howcome?
Even a total noob can win from a top player when throwing a few pokeballs or having stars all the time.
There is nothing that you can do about that.
Furthermore random explosions out of nowhere wich kill you instantly unreactable.
I must be missing something but items are way to random and it takes no skill it all if you get the right items or if your opponent is unlucky when an explosion falls out of the sky.
-
A newcomer that camps while waiting for items is going to get massacred by a more experienced player.
Each item has a use, but also has a disadvantage. An experienced player can work with an item or deal with someone who is relying on an item. Also, in all my years of playing all iterations of Smash, I have never seen someone randomly explode in the sky. If there's an explosion, it's because someone set a trap, threw a Bob-omb or let a Bob-omb/Electrode remain dormant for too long. Those are just a few examples.
-
Most items you can deflect or cancel out. I think you can even catch pokeballs. Even then, a lot of items have a chance to be a dud or back fire completely.

You don't get it.
One match last two rounds, if one is really lucky even without camping a proffesional player can be knocked out of the bracket by some guy who just was lucky and has no skill at all. Everyone can win with items.
Also if two proffesional player play against eachouther there is no skill involved It's just who has the best item first
Furtheremore there are random explosions.
If a bottle or even box falls out of the sky and your near (under) it it will explode. I'm not to sure about bombs but It's torally random.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EFx0-Zkn54
yes you can catch items but a pokeball can also be thrown down so pretty much useless.
Also if I'm not mistaken bombs and explosions cannot be shielded you can't even power shield them.
-
I get it just fine. And this is coming from someone who actually doesn't like using items at all, even when I'm playing just for fun. Items are not a game breaker. Each one has a disadvantage.
Again, I have never -EVER- seen a player randomly explode. If an item is thrown? Absolutely.
-

I have believe it,
If your unfortunate enough when a bottle or box spawns above you and falls on top of you
Or ofcourse during a move when an items spawns.
I prefer to play without items but I definitly do have some fun times on matches with items.
just saying that for competitive scene items are a no go. There is no skill in using items they are overall easy to use if you know a thing or two.
items are fun I do play the occasional match with items.
-
I have never seen it. Me and my brothers played Smash every day growing up and were never unfortunate enough to deal with that. But, again, we didn't like using items. There were occasions when all of the items were on Very High. It was chaos, but I never saw anyone randomly detonate.
Biking was just pointing out that it seems lame to not include a classic part of Smash brothers in competitive play.

When I was growing up I pretty much played this game everyday with friends and my brother.
Pretty much all the time with items on very high. So believe it you will randomly die and there is nothing that you can do about it.
-
This is one of those instances that I'll have to see to believe. Unfortunately, I haven't played much Smash lately (which is a shame since it's the only fighting game I'm good at) so it'll be a while until I can check this out.

And yet the best player destroys all top fox players while using peach wich is not even in the top 5 characters.
I don't see it aside from the other 4 top tier charaters pretty evenly matched. Heck I might even say top 10 seriously. Furthermore allot of top 10 players are not fox mains there are allot of sheik and falco mains on the top.
If you go lower than indeed allot of fox but at top lvl play there are plenty of different characters aside from fox.

Melee is still very limited in character variety in the higher tiers of competitive play; the dude using Peach seems to be the only one who can afford to go outside the 5 character comfort zone. Nobody's dissing your fav game, but its pro scene has some pretty limited viability right now just due to the way it works compared to other fighting games.

Afford lol peach wrecks fox. Chain grabbing fox is really easy with peach.
Many people don't like using peach that's my guess anyways. Heck I don't want to play peach even if she is really good. Many people prefer other charaters and my guess is that they don't want to play a sissy charater like peach since if I'm honest fox needs to think twice before going into a peach.
Aside from that ice climbers, samus, pikachu some falcon's do pretty well to. and are all players in top 20 range.
Regarding other fighting games usually it is the same way a top 10 or less characters wich are competetive viable while the rest of the cast dies out.
There are always a select group of charaters that people use, It's unavoidable that every character is balanced. In games like street fighter II the cast consisted of only 5 characters to be competetive viable while iconic characters like Ken and RYU were bottom tier and not suitable for competition.

We should set up a online match.
Settle it in Smash!!
-also: I'm aware sworddude. It's just a silly generalization.

Honorable mentions: Metal Gear Solid, Super Smash Bros Melee, Call of Duty (all of them)
I never got the undying love for Earthbound myself either. To me, Star Tropics was a much better RPG.

Easy that should be two series: Halo and The Legend of Zelda, the first one because I practically get assaulted by a friend since he was talking about this one every damn day and he still does at every time that I unblock him from the Skype this and the fact that it's a first person shooter make me think that some people overate this title to much and about the LOZ was never a fan of the saga, in fact I don't play their games even when I do got a couple of them at my collection, the saga is ok but again the fact that a lot of people puts this one as the best game from Nintendo makes me sick ;D

My pick for the most overrated game ever is Red Dead Redemption. After the massive love and praise it gets, I was expecting a near flawless game that would be a ton of fun. Instead I got a game with dreadful controls, brainless AI, unengaging cutscenes, no reason to loot bodies or use shops, and awful cattle herding missions. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a game in my life.

That's exactly how I thought I would feel about it and didn't pick it up for quite some time. Did you go into it thinking you wouldn't like it to begin with? I love that game and it is completely not my style being A) Open world and B) a western.

I didn't know that much about it before going into it, mainly it was an open world western game that has third person shooting and horse riding. All those things sounded fine to me, and since it has universal acclaim I was confident it would be mostly enjoyable even if it didn't completely live up to the hype.
In the game's defence, I didn't play it as most other people played it since most of my time was spent completing the story, so I might have gotten more enjoyment if I played it more casually and took more time with it. Nevertheless, I still think it has glaring issues that cannot be ignored and make it an extremely flawed game. I had no need at all to visit shops and get new equipment as combat was extremely easy so my weapons were sufficient and ammo drops were abundant.

I'm about the same with this. Not into Westerns at all, so I had zero interest. That is until I actually played it, then I was hooked! It really is a phenomenal game. The music, the atmosphere, the sense of exploration, the attention to details; it all just blends together so well.
