Title: Do you lend your games?
Post by: dreama1 on June 20, 2016, 03:49:12 am
Do you lend your games? Why? How do you feel about people touching the rarities in your collection?

No I typically don't lend games but I do give away system/game bundles to friends and family instead of selling it off. I'd never lend any rarities even if someone asked though because these same friends and family don't view them the way I do and might not take care of them.

I have no problem with people looking/touching my collection at my place. I don't see the point of lending it out to someone though, I mean, if they really want to play it they can just play it emulated on their computer

Back when I was a kid we would trade games for a week or so. These days, the only person who I lend a game to is my brother. He's the only one I trust who won't do something foolish.

I've learned to follow the philosophy of "Don't let someone borrow something that you will want back".

I've had too many situations where I would lend someone something and it would go missing, without any intent of replacing it, or they would claim it's theirs or that you GAVE it to them.  I've lent out CDs and games to friends in my youth and too many times it would disappear.  I've let my brothers borrow some N64 games, games that we had as children but sold or traded off that I went out and bought recently, and he would later claim that it's his from our childhood.  I let my brother borrow an N64 and about 10 games, about a year later, I asked if my brother would bring back 2 of the games I let him borrow, and he and the rest of my sibling unit proceeded to throw 10 sorts of shit fits claiming that I had no right to ask for any of it back.  At this point I've only managed to acquire maybe 7 out of the 10 games through other means.  There is still contention about this because not only are they claiming that those 10 games aren't mine, they are claiming some of the games that I bought after I moved out are theirs too.

When I moved out of my parents house, before I was allowed to pack up my collection, I had to let my siblings go through my collection and pick out games they claimed were theirs.  Sort of luckily, in my youth we only had an N64 and Gamecube, so those were the only consoles they could try to steal games from.

The only acceptable answer to this question is no.

I only lend out games to people I trust, like a couple of my friends who are collectors as well. Even then I don't see myself lending out a rare game, or one that has a lot of sentimental value to me.

I'll lend titles to friends who I know will take care of them. I lent a Nintendo DS Lite and some games to my friend's younger brother and he lost a few of the games and damaged the system. There are certain titles I won't lend if they're valuable too. I'm a major freak about titles I've bought brand-new as well and usually don't lend them out. If it's a disc based game I'll keep the box and manual and just lend the disc in one of these:
For any cart games I lend I use the NES clamshell cases like these:
Overall though, I'd feel comfortable lending games to anyone on this site because everyone is a collector and (presumably) takes care of their video game titles. I'll lend controllers and system accessories too because they're hard to ruin/damage. I don't mind people touching rarities/valuables in my collection as long as they've cleaned their hands. (I've got hand-sanitizer in my game room for a reason)
A couple of weeks ago, I was at work and my brother had a friend over, they got drunk and his friend spilt beer on my N64 shelf. Thankfully it didn't get in any of the carts (because they have pin covers on them) or damage the labels. I know it was an accident, but it upsets me when people don't take care of my things. Bottom line, if you take care of it your things and I know you'll take care of mine, I'll lend you games, If not, I won't.

I do the same thing when lending out games, the case/manual just has a chance of getting damaged in my mind.

Yup, I lent a game a while back and my friend's sister chewed on the spine of the case and left a booger on the manual. I kid you not.

Never saw it this way but this is so damn true use to do this in the past and am still crying for so many titles that I had lost because of this, some of them I managed to purchase them again but still and maybe will never going to have at my collection Demon's Crest for the SNES, Mega Man V for the GameBoy and Felix the Cat for the NES, wish a painfully death to those mothafuckas that I lend these titles.

Depends on who it is. I lend stuff to my brother occassionally, but usually place a max number of games he cam borrow at once. Typically it's no more than two games at a time.

I don't think I'd lend to any of my three brothers unfortunately. They just don't take good care of things. If I did lend it, I'd have to watch them the whole time

No

If I would ever lend out my games I would only lend out the disc or cart only no boxes or manuals.

The discs will go in a blanco cd case. empty gamecube wii cases etc and the cardridges in cardridge protectors. i do have some spare cases.

But knowing my friends and how they handle their stuff chances of me lending something to them are pretty low.

I have but I have strict rules.

1) its only newer games like Xbox 360, XBone, PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U. (maybe a PS2 or XB if it's nothing special)

2) Nothing rare or special edition.

3) I have to know you well enough I know where you live. (I case I need to go get it)

4) Only one item is ever lent out at any time. I never lend out the cases/manuals, I put in an extra DVD case I have lying around.

5) You break it or damage it you replace it with exactly what I gave you. This only happened once. The guy's dog got a hold of it and destroyed it and he replaced it with a brand new copy when he returned it. After that he never asked to borrow anything again. lol

I find when I tell people the rules most are afraid to borrow anything. lol

That's like me but I take collateral till its returned in the same condition. just by chance it usually ends up being bicycles for the most part.

Depends on the game & the person. If it's a cheaper, common title (let's say 10 bucks or less to replace), I'll lend that out pretty freely. It's a good way to see if the lend-ee is good enough to trust with something more expensive. Rarer titles are lent out to those I trust (most of my fiancé's siblings are quite trustworthy with such.)

My rarest of rare games (think hundred+ dollars) don't get lent out. Period. Quite simply, if something happened I would expect the game to be replaced quickly. I don't want these people to suddenly find themselves with a massive payment to cover a game damaged accidentally/outside of their control.

Of course, if you're at my place, you're welcome to play anything you want*. I'll be around, so it'll be easier to keep an eye out of bad situations.

(*I have a handful of rare sealed games. Those are off limits. If anyone's opening a game, it's ME!)

I've had this happen, more than once, I have not spoken to or seen these people since.

Lending a game is a surefire way of getting rid of it. I mean you could throw it out onto the highway, or you could lend it to a so-called friend. Either way.

No, I don't.

lol I don't know about you guys but I would have zero problem calling the police if it never showed back up to me. obviously the person who borrowed it wouldn't care that much about you to lose your friendship, why should I care about calling the cops on a thief?

That's why I take collateral. if they don't give the game back I sell the collateral Item and buy the same game and potentially another one.

I'll loan our newer stuff.  It can be replaced easy enough.

I tend to give older stuff away, if it's not too pricey.  I'll find another one for cheap-ish.
Story Time!  Not too long ago a buddy broke out his old NES.  He was really talking up about how he loved this one game where you were a little dude in a maze and you dropped bombs.  I brought him a copy of Bomberman out of my trade pile.  Jiminy Christmas!  Was he ever excited.

I used to when I was younger. Now I just lend stuff to my sister and my boyfriend. My sis could care less about stuff that isn't hers so we have a rule where the case stays on the shelf and only I handle the disk so, when she's done it get it out of the system. Seriously when I found a disk crammed between the wall and dresser and that she was using a case as a coaster I was like nope never again. My BF on the other hand has lost games (not mine thank god) and cases (unfortunately mine) but has started becoming somewhat of a collector so hes gotten better.

Just being curious but did your brother by any chance lost some of your gamecube game cases?

I'm saying this because I usually don't see to many people with a disc only copy of fire emblem path of radiance or skies of arcadia

Depends on who it is really.  I lent my entire PS1 Final Fantasy collection to my mother-in-law 4 or so years ago.  I know where they are, I know they are being taken care of so I don't have a problem lending her games.

I will my brother too, but that is after he and I got into it because I loaned him Final Fantasy Anthology and Chronicles.  A friend of his convinced him to loan them to him and "the friend" denies it ever happened.  Note this person used to be a friend of mine too, until I caught him stealing from me.  So there is a rule, no matter who it is, don't loan them to anybody else, period.  Other than that one incident he's been really good with them.

Anybody else, hell no.  I used too.  Lost a few games and had some that were worth quite a bit at the time get really beat up.  I didn't realize they were worth anything at the time. That one is on me though.

Just being curious but did your brother by any chance lost some of your gamecube game cases?
I'm saying this because I usually don't see to many people with a disc only copy of fire emblem path of radiance or skies of arcadia

Nah they didn't lose them. I picked them both up at GameStop right when they stopped selling GC games. I had seen them the day before with the cases but when I went back the next day they threw out the cases and I had to ask if they still had GC games and they did in the yellow envelopes.

I usually dont let people borrow my games unless its my brothers because they collect too so they keep their stuff mint.  Because I am extremely OCD with scratches on discs. I don't want them to get ruined. I let my uncle borrow a game once and he beat it up and it got coffee rings on the case because he used it as a coaster. and i let him borrow a 360 game when 360 was current gen and he sold it lol. Now I am very careful. My Uncle is on the borrowing stuff blacklist now  :D

Growing up lending games to friends was the norm. It was considered highly rude to refuse to loan something out without good reason (One save slot/ currently working on learning the tricks to a level, brand new). Parents loved it because they only had to buy a fraction of the games we wanted and we loved it because we had access to tons of games that we otherwise would have never been able to talk our parents into or would have never considered trying on our own.

Only once did I end up losing a game, my friend's family moved suddenly and we never had a chance to swap back our games. He has one of mine (can't remember which) and I have his Super Spike V'Ball/Nintendo World Cup. It's been over 20 years now and I still laugh when I see that cartridge.

It just doesn't come up these days but, if I trusted the person asking, I would like to believe I would still do it.

absolutely not
i even hated lending things to my ex because he would deny case damage that wasn't there before he got them
and i always watched him break up weed on the nearest game case to him and it made me cringe ugh

i had to rebuy harvest moon back to nature because my aunt borrowed it, and my brother borrowed my genesis and a couple games, and i'll never get them back now that i've been booted out of the fambam.
i'm too flighty and things happen in my life too much for me to be friendly about letting people borrow games. i almost lost a number of them to my ex too, but i recovered them, fortunately.

it really bothers me to let people borrow my stuff. even my ps2 controller has a giant knife slash on the bottom of it from some mishap via my ex.

so yeah, no, i'll never lend a game again.
and anyway, i'm not a rental service. when i lived with a roommate, i let him play some games, but i handled them, and he only got ps3 discs from me... i refused to let the case leave. before i moved i made sure all the games were in their cases, too. ps3 games are pretty hard to scratch, so that was whatever, and he normally only wanted to play AAA titles or games not worth a lot anyway, so it was whatever. my ex, i kinda converted him to a niche gamer/semi-collector, but he was still just not gentle with cases and it pissed me off. but it meant he wanted to play my niche games a lot, and ughhh.
between my ex using my collection like a library service, and my ex-roommate using my room like a giant free best buy (at one point he had 3 of my USB cables and my ps3 power cable ???) i'm now just closed for a service i was never open for in the first place.

I haven't loaned out any games since the playstation one days. I use to put them in a blank jewel case so the case and manual stayed like new, but I always knew the disc was coming back scratched.
I stopped lending them out after MANY conversations that ended with "it was already scratched" or "relax, it's just a game".

When I still lived at home, I would also have the joy of coming home from work to my brother and his friends hanging out in my game room drinking. I tried to keep the games in new condition by putting EVERY single disc in a blank jewel case and putting them all in flip files. They would just stack the loose discs on the shelf when they switched games. I stacked a few of his records the same way one day to prove a point. The point "I" learned was that I was gonna get the shit beat outta me and my dad would take his side though LMAO

I really don't know anybody locally who still plays console games. I personally wouldn't even think of asking another collector to borrow their stuff though.

Depends on the game, really. I'm not gonna cry about it if someone scuffs up a $3 game, but I'd be very wary of handing over some of the more expensive games in my collection. Also depends on the friend I'm loaning it to. Some have their own neatly organized display system for their games and will treat whatever I lend them like part of their own collection. Others keep loose disks and carts tossed in a pile on the floor like barbarians. And I never thought I'd sound this elitist about something as basic as game collecting. This site has ruined me.

Lent out RC Pro Am to a friend down the street when we were kids. Friend moves away, and the game is gone.

Lent out Final Fantasy VII to a friend in school. That kid lent it to some other friend, and that friend moved away. Game is gone.

Lent out Earthbound to a friend in school (before it was considered a treasure). Came back mostly good, but the guide was rumpled.

Lent out Tron 2.0 to a co-worker. Game sat in the back of his truck and got horribly squashed.

Lent out Uncle Buck on DVD to a co-worker. Never came back.

Lent out an Akira Kurosawa samurai DVD set to another co-worker. Came back after 3 years, but in surprisingly good condition.

In the end, people don't take care of things.

As a kid, I would always lend my games to friends and family vice versa. Today, the only one I really lend my games to, is my brother, as he is a collector aswell and I'm confident that he knows how to take care of 'em :)

Carts are one thing, but loose disks will be scratched and ruined. I wouldn't say that's elitist, just basic care of your things. I can't imagine a grown human being leaving those things around like that.

Haha, I should have clarified. I absolutely have friends who would just throw a loose disc on a shelf and call it a day, but I also have one rather notorious friend who throws away their cases and manuals and keeps the discs in one of those big CD binders. I'm not just talking about beat up old games. I've seen them do this with brand new games. It makes my whiny little collecting heart hurt. Not too bad, I guess, since it's gotten me a lot of free cases and manuals over the years, but I've got to wonder why they bother buying complete copies when they'd save a lot of time and effort just buying loose discs.
