New, free app on XBox One allows you to play NES & Sega ROMs on your console.
Not homebrew, officially certified.
I smell a lawsuit coming.
-
I hope a lawsuit is coming from both Nintendo and sega
-
LOL ;D
Who wants to bet on how long it'll take for cease and desist?
I say 3 days. -If that ! ! !
-
Wonder if they will defend themselves.
-
Other people have pointed out to me that the emulator in itself isn't illegal, that's how they're gonna get away with it. It's the ROMs that are illegal.
-
This is quite the legal gray area either way.
-
Haha crazy I actually just downloaded that exact app on my Lumia 950, I'll have to check it out
-
Doesn't look like it's in the store just yet. At least I can't find it.
Sega and Nintendo will probably get involved even though the Retron 5 has so far lives to die another day. I know the difference is the Retron 5 requires the cartridges. But it's still emulation and it copies the rom to do it. Even if only for a little while.

Just checked their twitter.
It's been delisted already.
-
To bad that I don't own a One also I wonder why the hell Nintendo didn't use it at their Wii U ?, oh yeah because they will not earn a damn cent if they put if for free ;D

There's nothing really "gray" about it, even before you throw the ROMs themselves into the issue. Emulators, by their very nature, run on a fake reverse-engineered version of patented hardware.
-
It was actually Microsoft that took it down. They apparently can put it back up on PC through the Windows 10 store, just as long as there's no Xbox One compatibility. I think Microsoft was just trying to make sure nothing came about from this.

Even so, emulators themselves aren't illegal. Plus the patents for most hardware that is being emulated currently are long gone nowadays.

NES, SNES, SMS, and GEN patients have all expired.

Those patients all lived good lives. I wonder whatever became of their patents though. ;)
