For me the n64 controller is my least favorite. I know their are worst controllers like the atari jaguar controller, Atari 7200 controller or maybe even the dream cast but neither of them three systems are as glorified as the n64 so I feel it should take a lot more of the criticism for its controller. And I also play the N64 substantially more. I try to play Orcarina of Time on original hardware now and I cant without getting sore thumbs. The 3DS or WII U e shop versions are the only ways I can play OOT now. Looking back I question how so many of us were able to put as much time as we did on OOT on such a god awful controller. If only the N64 came bundled with the gamecube controller. :D
What is your least favorite controller? :)
-
My least favorite?
The GameCube. It just seems like that giant A button just gets in the way.
-
Out of the controllers I've used (OEM only), it would be the original Duke for the OG Xbox. Thing is cumbersome, huge, the layout is bad, the d pad is trash, I just don't like it. Thankfully they made the S model, which is a great controller.
-
I'm going to go with the Game Cube.
-
The N64 controller, easily. I hate the hand placement, I hate that the D-pad is nearly useless; and I hate the flimsy, easy-to-break, and way-too-sensitive thumbstick.
-
Not the gamecube
Not the N64
-
Not even sure if it counts but the Wii mote. Despise it
-
The model 1 Sega Saturn controller, the Nintendo 64 controller and the Dreamcast controller.
-
The Dual Shock. I hate the sticks and shoulder buttons and the size/shape of the controller is such that I start to develop painful cramps in my hands after about 15 minutes.
-
N64
Jaguar
Xbox
Game Cube
Wii
-
Probably Wii because of the goofy ass design, though overall would be the N64 controller. Love that system, but that controller is terrible lol
-
love the n64 controller but that is my fav system
og xbox, big ass fat controller.
-
How can you not like Dualshock/Gamecube controller they are the best imo. N64 is by far the worst
-
I'm one of those odd ones that can find the N64 controller comfortable.
by far to me the worst are the coleco\intellivision controllers. not to mention the 5200 which didn't even re-center itself I've never played with that one, but it seems similar enough. when you need to put an overlay on a controller to tell you what those buttons do that seems like bad design to me
-
The original XBox's "Duke " controller. That thing was WAY to damn huge. Maybe my hands are too small, but it wasn't until I got to use the "S" controller that could I really play the system.
-
The CD-i spoon controller.
-

I would've liked the N64 controller had it went with a better analog stick. That analog stick is trash. I'm sure everyone that's played the game knows of the death that would come from Mario Party games and having to spin that stick like crazy till it burned a hole in your hand lol The Dualshock is where they nailed analog sticks. Others might have done it earlier that I don't know of, but like there's a reason the Playstation controller has never changed design lol
-
Dreamcast, I really don't have a problem with the keypad controllers, jaguar, intellivision, etc. I use an adapter on the dreamcast that allows for the use of Saturn controllers on the thing.
-
Gamecube. I never liked how small it was, and I'm not a person with giant gorilla hands either. I also don't care for the button placement.
-
Dreamcast for sure. It's not only uncomfortable and ugly, it's outdated! Why they decided to put only 6 buttons on it while EVERY controller in it's generation and practically every controller in the gen BEFORE it had 8+ is beyond me. >:(
EDIT: I might say N64 too, but I haven't really used it enough.
-
The CD-i spoon controller.
That was more for the interactive media and movies. I don't think it was intended for the actual video games, it had a proper controller for that.
It worked great for the interactive, educational movies they used the CD-i for at our school. You basically just had to make "Choose Your Own Adventure" type choices, or answer a question.
-
5200.
-
The Dualshock is where they nailed analog sticks.
I disagree heavily. With their overall floatiness plus having a convex thumbpad design, they really couldn't give a good feel of precision outside of a twin-stick shooter. When I think of the perfect analog stick, the One wins hands down.

You mean Xbox One? Yeah, sure, of course it's better, but I was talking about when they first came out lol

Here's a top 5 of my least favorite controllers...
5. The Original US Sega Saturn Pad
(http://www.segaretro.org/images/thumb/f/f3/Saturnpad2.jpg/300px-Saturnpad2.jpg)
I am pretty sure I own a couple of these somewhere and while they're not the worst pad I've ever used, I never could go back to them once Saturn released the Japanese pad stateside. I remember being in Toys R Us and spying a boxed grey Saturn pad for sale. I quickly purchased it and my old Saturn pad immediately achieved "Reserved for Player 2" status. :P
To be fair, it was a serviceable pad but it felt flimsy and cheaply put together. The D-Pad hurt to use after a while and the shoulder buttons didn't seem to work half the time.
4. The Xbox Duke Controller
(http://www.videogameconsolelibrary.com/images/2000s/01_MS_Xb/xbox-duke_controller.jpg)
I no longer own a Duke Controller because my dog chewed through the wire when she was a puppy (along with one of my Japanese style Saturn Pads :'(). I quickly abandoned the Duke once the smaller and more ergonomic S-Controller came out. I might go back and pick up a Duke controller again if only out of a sense of nostalgia. The controller was just too big for my hands and I recall not being able to maintain a good grip if I had even the slightest bit of moisture on my hands. The D-pad was weird and felt tacked on.
3. The Sega Master System Control Stick
(http://static1.troca-se.com/uploads/items/2012/10/23/23/79719/Master-System-Joystick-Controller_50871adf9ab47.jpg)
I grew up lurking in and about arcades so I much preferred that control scheme as opposed to the control pad dominance of the home game market. We owned both a NES and SMS and while I had the amazing Advantage for my NES, my options were almost non-existent for my SMS. I obtained a Control Stick from a kid who was like the only other SMS owner that I was aware of (the NES was by far the more popular machine about town). I thought I might finally enjoy my SMS games better until I realized the inverted controls. :o
Funny enough, you'd think being a southpaw and having a controller with the stick on the right and buttons on the left would be ideal right? Well, I've always felt that the concept of "the dominant hand should work the buttons while the passive hand works the D-Pad" to be a load of nonsense and the Control Stick is almost unusable to me. :P
2. The Broderbund UForce Controller for NES and the Power Glove by Mattel for NES (Tie)
I was hesitant to list these because even when they were released, I knew they were nothing more than shoddy gimmicks. Still, I've tried to use these "controllers" and while the Power Glove performed better than the UForce (which I couldn't even really get working), saying I preferred one over the other is like me saying I want a turd burger instead of a crap sandwich. :o
1. The Intellivision Controller
(http://users.axess.com/twilight/console/detail/intv.jpg)
This is the first controller that immediately springs to mind when I think of the worst controllers ever (IMO). I never was a fan of the layout with the phone dial buttons (this goes for the Coleco and Jaguar controllers as well) and the directional disc felt cheap compared to the joystick controllers for Atari and even Coleco. Actually the control felt flimsy overall and I have never cared for the pigtail cord.
We never had an Intellivision growing up and my opinion might have been a little different if we did but I doubt it. :P
Honorable mentions...
The N64 Controller
(http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070925042413/ssb/images/6/62/N64-controller.jpg)
This felt like it was really half a controller because of the way it was held which made the D-Pad largely useless. I want to say it was Hori who made a more streamlined N64 pad that I wanted to pick up but never got around to getting.
The Virtual Boy Controller
(http://retromedia.ign.com/retro/image/article/845/845419/hardware-virtual-boy-20080114030010692.jpg)
I let this one off the hook from being in my "Top 5" because it's not the fault of the controller that I can't see it while playing. It has a nice fit and feel at least though I find the dual D-pads a little wonky.
The Sega Master System Control Pad
(http://users.axess.com/twilight/console/detail/sms.jpg)
I only grief this pad because we got the NES before the SMS and while I wasn't the biggest fan of the NES Control Pad (especially after the Advantage and NES Max), the SMS pad felt like a step backwards with it lacking Start/Select buttons and having an (IMO) inferior D-Pad compared to the NES one.

I agree. Xbox One analog sticks dimples design makes them the best I've used so far. The clickly d-pad however I do not like.
-
The US Atari 7800 Proline controllers are the worst first party controller I’ve personally have ever used. They are incredibly uncomfortable and people will often complain of hand cramping after using them for long sessions.
The early versions of the Master System controller annoy me because their cord comes out the right side of the controller. The only comfortable way for me to hold it is to let the cord run in between my middle and index finger. Early versions also had that stupid screw hole for that optional joystick and the covers for them always seem to be missing.
Many people crap on the Intellivision’s controller I for one don’t mind it. The Intellivision II’s controller one the other hand is much worse. The numeric keypad has no tactile feedback at all. Also the side buttons don’t have much if any travel. So it doesn’t feel like your actually pressing them like a button instead it feels like you're just applying pressure. I hate the Intellivision II controller so much I actually wired a model 1 controller to work on the console.
-
Any PlayStation controller ever. I never liked how far down and close together the sticks are. At work I use them for 6 hours a day and by the end my hands are all cramped up. Can't stand the d-pad either. The battery life isn't great either.
-
So much hate for the gamecube controller.
In my opinion one of the better if not the best controller ever made.
D pad wise sure but for all the other stuff I heavily disagree.
-
The CD-i spoon controller.

I'm inclined to agree with you, except one small thing, the CD-i 450. When it was released, it was intended to be a smaller cheaper unit mainly for playing games. By the time it was released, it was clear that only the game software was selling. Most of the pictures on the system box were advertising games, but it came with the damn spoon controller. To be fair, the actual game controllers are pretty terrible too.
-
So much hate for the gamecube controller.
In my opinion one of the better if not the best controller ever made.
D pad wise sure but for all the other stuff I heavily disagree.
I don't hate the controller like I do the N64 controller. But I can definitely see where improvements are needed. The D-Pad is terrible. Which really sucks when using it for the Game Boy Player, or 2D games. And the triggers at the top of the controller push in way too deep. It would be a lot easier if you could just tap them. Plus, what's with the weird shaped action buttons?
-
Plus, what's with the weird shaped action buttons?
What they went for is the idea of having primary, secondary, and tertiary buttons for the controls rather than having 4 equal face buttons. So, your thumb will naturally be resting over the button you use the most (A), leaving just a small rotation needed to press the the other buttons rather than completely moving your thumb. It's actually a pretty comfortable setup when you play a game that understands the controller's philosophy (but those that don't want you to do crap like pressing B and X at the same time).

To be honest for the gameboy player you have special hori controllers or you could even use a GBA console as an controller instead.
The gameboy player is an add on, the gamecube controller was never meant to be used for gameboy games, also in the regular games the D pad is barely used just sometimes for gimmicks.
The gamecube is a 3D console after all, the games that I own are all 3D games except for capcom vs snk only 1 of very few games, the controller is made for 3D games wich it is perfect for, there are barely any good classic 2D games on the gamecube.

If you say so
I agree with the D pad but for the rest IMO it is one of the better controllers with a superior analog stick, and excellent button lay out.
For the classic 2D games I agree but there are barely any classic 2D games on the gamecube, the better games are 3D games wich the controller is made for.
And Excellent 2D games like smash bros work perfectly with this controller.

I can't stand the Dreamcast controller. I don't know what species that thing is ergonomically designed for but it isn't people. And that thumbstick is death itself. And the VMU beep on startup... and the VMUs in general... the triggers are too low... the bumps on the buttons hurt... the D-pad is horrible... goddammit. And the thumbstick counts twice. I feel actual pain when I try and use it for extended periods. Plus it rolls around on my thumb and keeps slipping away when I'm trying to run in game. The VMU beeps count twice too.
The Wiimote/nunchuk combo I also don't like because I'm a lefty and it isn't made for lefties. Wiimote in left hand doesn't match up with the screen a lot of the time, Wiimote in right hand is disorienting for me. Nunchuk in left hand means Wiimote in right hand which I can't do, nunchuk in right hand feels wrong because left hand is the movement stick hand. And that brick of a classic controller can go to hell.

Soul Calibur II on the Game Cube was a nightmare (no pun intended) because of the controller.

...off the top of my head:
-Capcom vs. SNK 2
-Intellivision Lives
-Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition
-Mega Man Anniversary Collection
-Mega Man X Collection
-Midway Arcade Treasures 1-3
-Namco Museum
-Sonic Mega Collection
-Sonic Gems Collection
-Super Smash Bros. Melee
-Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2
And then like I said, the Game Boy Player as well.
Totally valid complaint. D-Pad sucks. Especially valid since Nintendo had fantastic D-Pads on earlier systems.

first of all smash bros plays excellent with a gamecube controller there ain't a better controller for that game. ps2 ps1 controllers are trash in comparison.
Second of all old sonic, mega man, zelda old games etc should be played on other consoles to be fair.
The only fair complaint is for capcom vs snk since the other games can be played on the older consoles.
You don't buy a gamecube to play old 2D sonic or mega man games.
An invalid complaint in my opinion since 90% of that list is for old classic games and for smash bros it is the perfect controller.
You forgot to mention ikaruga btw, but to be fair the gamecube controller ain't that bad for that game.
Also like you mentioned: Especially valid since Nintendo had fantastic D-Pads on earlier systems.
Nintendo focused on 2D games in the past but in the gamecube days the main titles are pretty much all 3D games. Older games are meant to be played on the older consoles.
I cannot imagine playing the 3D zelda or mario games with a D pad. They had a superior analog stick on the gamecube controller for the 3D games.
-
^ Why can't there be both a good thumbstick and a good D-pad? PlayStation seems to do fine with both on their controllers.
-
^ Why can't there be both a good thumbstick and a good D-pad? PlayStation seems to do fine with both on their controllers.
I agree that the D pad is miles better but for 2D fighting games the controller is still trash the ps1 and ps2 controllers.
As far as the analog stick goes it's allot worse than the gamecube and even the wii one.
But again the D pad on the Gamecube controller was more for gimmicks just some extra buttons, there is a reason why it had an not to important spot on the controller and being really small.
-
The Atari 5200 controller tops my list.
Finding one that works is next to impossible.
-
I would go with the Atari 5200's controller also!
-
Either the Atari 5200 or N64. 5200 for the squishy controls and N64 for the layout and feel in my hand.
-
Jaguar is pretty bad
-
The pack in controller for the Retron 5 wins.
Worst controller of all time. The clicky thumbstick has huge deadzone and makes diagonals practically impossible. The action buttons get hyper sensitive with use and false/extra presses become a regular occurrence. The plastic is also ultra thin and cheap.
