Just figured I'd have a MHW thread since a few of us have been talking about it in the general section. Please be careful of spoilers in this thread!
I've been playing pretty much nonstop since it came out but I'm only at HR 12, I think. Taking my time is nice! I like pushing the story but also am happy to gather things and farm monsters with folks.
My PSN is Deso31 in case anyone needs any help!
I don't want to get into too many spoilers here - I know folks are at all different levels, and I love the surprises the game has in store.
If anything, I'm still having a hard time finding the grimalkynes and the poogie outfits! I've found a few outfits but am wondering if there aren't more.
I wonder if this is a good way to kinda/sorta hide spoilers. :-X

This is a must have game for me since I really enjoyed MH3. Looking forward to playing it sometime soon! I just need a PS4 lol
-
I've never played a Monster Hunter game. I own a couple, but I've never played. Don't really know where to start.
I think I have 3, 4, and Generations.
-
My first Monster Hunter and it is a terrific game. I’ve put in nearly 50 hours now and progress has slowed as the monsters have got tougher.
I’ve just beaten the first really tough monster and am now having to think hard about builds.
I am hoping I can beat the main story :)

I played MH4U and have Generations but put very little time into both. I got the general gist of it but didn't like to play it for very long stints. I didn't think it was because of it being on the 3DS and the limitations that come with that, but now that I'm playing MH:W on PS4, I can easily play it for hours at a time, wasting the whole day.
I've heard from a lot of veterans that it's very difficult to start with one Monster Hunter and go backwards since they keep making improvements with each game.
If you have a PS4, I'd say RedBox or rent it to see if you'd like it and go from there :)

Right, but if it's hard to go backwards, I should start with 3 and move forward. Plus... money.
-
This is my first Monster Hunter too. I tried once or twice in the past, but I always thought the games were clunky and eventually became very outdated in their design. I've gone and put something like 80 hours into the game. I think I'm coming up towards the end of the story, I just need to get grinding to max out some gear defense to handle some of these final fights. I'm really hooked on the insect glaive right now, because it's really fun just bouncing around the monsters, with dual blades as my secondary. Usually in RPG's and action games, I like to play heavier builds, built around withstanding damage and big swords, but I actually prefer mobility more in this.

Yup! I haven't played 3 but have heard good things about it. But yeah, I hear that about the money...

I've been maining insect glaive lately, too. Hunting horn is my backup but I started to try out the dual blades last night. I've put maybe... 50 hours into the game? Very early on in the story, I think, still. But yeah, like you, I'm enjoying the mobility! I used to play more ranged in the past, but I love running around the monsters in this one since I can actually see what I'm doing, haha.
-
I do like bows, they basically wreck creatures that take to the air I've found if you just spam spike balls, though it's a low damage weapon I feel. I like bowguns, but their damage always feels kinda low to me and their lack of mobility makes it tough. Seem more like weapons to use in multiplayer, which I haven't done yet.

I'm loving MHW. Ton of people getting in with this one too, nice to see!

Not sure what counts as a spoiler, but if even knowing the name of a high rank monster is a spoiler, then just ignore below. I don't spoil anything specific otherwise.
Anyone far enough into the games story to know if there's a point where Bazelgeuse learns to freaking chill and not appear in damn near every investigation I do? It was terrifying the first few times, but it's like the 30th time he's shown up and I can't keep dung pods stocked up fast enough to keep shooing him away. Sometimes it's badass when multiple monsters show up as you fight, but he shows up in every map and guarantees he'll interject himself into nearly every fight. Do I have to do his optional mission to make him stop? If I beat these last story fights, does he stop? Go away you stupid monster!

That's interesting cos he has shown up in my last two investigations. I am nowhere near enough geared to handle him yet!
*SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS*
hey Kamikazekee, I've just unlocked the Nergigante hunt, how long did it take you to get where you are from here?

I could probably take him now, just been to focused on other fights to even try fighting him properly and usually I'm doing investigations now to try and build up armor upgrade points so I can get my gear ready for the final fights. But if I'm trying to more quickly grind out monsters, there's always an extra minute or two trying to deal with Bazelgeuse showing up. It's really annoying.
*SPOILERS*
I'm in the fights that come up after Nergigante, which I don't know if they are the last ones or not story wise. They show up right after you beat Nergigante and do track hunting again, so I'm not that far ahead story wise, but I've put 90 hours into the game with optional quests and investigation missions to get gear and upgrade it. Nearly have a windproof set ready to handle one of the fights. Nergigante is still the craziest thing I've fought in the game though. He's like a final boss that isn't the final boss. His speed, range, and hitbox is kinda nuts.
Random sidenote, but I was curious if this was just a female armor issue, or something the men were afflicted with to, but as a female character, there are a number of armor sets that have the ugliest, poofiest, umbrella-like, victorian era-like, skirts/dresses possible. Some have some smaller parts, and are fine, but others look ridiculous.
This is just a picture of the Rathian armor from an older game, but it's basically the same in World, it's so ugly lol

Hahaha, yeah, I think they're pretty unattractive as well, but I think it's just a callback to the old outfits from the previous games. The Rathian armor has always been kinda poofy for the female avatars, and Capcom doesn't shy from including things outside of the MH aesthetic, too... the 8-bit Mega Man costume coming up for your Palico, for instance.
Yeah, as for the one monster that just shows up randomly *everywhere* to rain on your parade... My biggest gripe is that, so far, the NPCs say *nothing* about him! Like he's just some random small monster that doesn't need to be talked about.
I find that it's helpful to start using them now at my HR - dung pods. I'm not good about using slinger ammo, but the dung pods are helpful because they'll encourage a monster to leave the area. Very useful if you're just trying to focus on one monster or if you're just gathering and don't feel like fighting something.

I just discovered dung pods too! Poor monsters, if I’m not smashing them in the head with a hammer, I’m throwing Dino-poo at them!

You guys are making me jealous playing this. I found time 4-5 days to make a character. I wont have time to actually play for a while though. I dont think I have a day off for the next 2.5 weeks. :(
-
I'm sure we'll still be grinding away when you're able to get into it! There are also a lot of people waiting for the PC version.
-
And just beat the game story wise. Talked about it a little more in the Challenge 2018 thread, so I won't say anything more here, though I feel confident in saying that Nergigante is still the hardest fight in the game to me. The ones that follow have their moments and require you to basically max out some gear if you can, but Nergigante still was the most frustrating to me due to his speed and lack of safe spots.
-
Gg! I haven't tangled with him yet - I'm enjoying going back and working on the other HR monsters and figuring out other secrets.

I'm planning to try and fight some of the endgame monsters again to try and get some of the neat looking armor they give, dabble in some multiplayer, and fool around till the new monsters get added into the game. I got a full set of Zorah, Dodogama, and Giros and I'd like to get a few more with good resistances. I mean, there's technically a ton of little stuff left to do in the game, it's designed to always have content of some sort, but I'm probably not gonna be like some hardcore fans that get 300 hours put into the game lol

Turns out that Monster Hunter World is Capcom's fastest shipped game in history. I can't how tell how much that means sold, I understand shipped isn't the same, but it's still likely sold millions in just the two weeks its been out, which is pretty great. Really cool to see and hopefully after their success with Resident Evil 7 and Monster Hunter World, they realize they need to put more serious work into other games of theirs (Dead Rising, their fighting games).
I'm curious to see if Capcom is going to actually release MHXX on Switch in the West or not and if people who have both a Switch and PS4/Xbox will go from World to MHXX. I know that I would likely not do so. Losing the improvements the series has with World, for a 3DS port, would be a rough time. I got into World specifically because I knew they were overhauling the game to take advantage of the hardware and to really give the series a more modern feel to it. Where I saw excitement with Monster Hunter World footage, when I look at Monster Hunter XX on Switch, I just see a 3DS port.

I feel the same...I believe that in the normal versions of the series there are loading screens to enter each sub-zone of the map. Can't imagine chasing that Rathalos across a dozen loading screens and then back again!
The success of the game is well deserved. I've really enjoyed the 55hrs I've put in so far, especially the multiplayer aspect.
I'm fully geared up to take on Nergigante for the first time tonight...325 defense and a viscious thunder hammer!
Edit - I just tried...he's brutal :(

That hammer could make him tough. His speed is so high and you have a lot of wind up with the strikes. I'm sure there are people who can beat him with the hammer, but I beat him in a battle of attrition, using the insect glaive to whittle him down slowly by bouncing around in the air. It's slow damage, but man it's never not fun to use that weapon lol

Got him! Took three tries, but once I got that dive bomb thing down it was okay. The majority of the fight was in a crystalline area with lots of slopes...I love the slide spinning leap on the hammer! The worst bit was in his nest... such a small space and we were both going berserk! I spent a lot of time under his legs spinning to win.
Got three investigations now...feels like I’m nearing the end.

* SPOILERS SPOILERS *
Okay Kushala Daora broke me, I had to call in back up :-[
With his wind aura, I'm not sure how melee can get him down as I couldn't get close enough to hit him half the time!
The guys I pulled in via SOS flare were excellent, they kicked his arse from range. There were a lot of flash pods used, which at least gave me an opening to hammer on his head for a bit!
On to the next elder dragon :)

Windproof and flash pods. Windproof annoyingly doesn't work for the severe wind tunnels he forms, but it helps with most everything else. That fight drove me nuts my first time, but got a lot better once I put together a windproof armor set.

I should have done that, but I was lazy! I went the easy route and fired off an SOS.
Hammer + Tornados + Flying Monster = SOS Flare :)
Luckily I got Teo, Vaal and Xeno down very quickly after that.
Great game...I've moved on to something else now, but I am thinking about Monster Hunter!

I still pop on for an hour or two a night to try and grind out some armor. Once I get Damascus maxed out, I'm gonna try to finish the assigned mission they give after the final boss fight, but I know I'll need my gear to be as strong as possible for it. I'm hoping Damascus is worth it for it's high defense max and it's defense boost along with 4 fire resistance with each piece.
Also finally decided to fight Nergigante again with my thunder katana and I feel more confident in fighting him. Still frustrating, but I wanted to actually do it without cheesing him the whole time with the insect glaive and actually battle. Funny enough, I recently just found out my katana has a move I didn't know it could do. After doing the powered up lunge strike, if I hit the R2/Triangle move again, I lift in the air, and then slam down for a delayed, multi-hit, strike. It's beautiful, and I didn't even know I had it after like 100 hours of play lol I still don't know how to reliably do it, I keep forgetting to get into training to learn it legit, but its so cool.
-
Got Nergi down over the weekend and starting to track down the next batch of monsters. Excited to see the other monsters with my own eyes and tackling them myself. I'm shocked that I've already put over 110 hours in this game - it's been a while since I've done that with a new game.
I'm still juggling between a lot of weapons. I played a bit with the bow yesterday but am really enjoying the dual blades as well. My insect glaive is still a go-to, and my hunting horn isn't getting the love it used to. I like the HH but always feel like I'm not utilizing it as well as I should.
-
I think after all these hours, I've settled on my permanent weapon, and it's the Long Sword. I finally learned it's attack buff abilities and it's amazing Helm Splitter attack. If I use speed sharpening buffs, the quickly used sharpness can be put back on real quick and I got at least two weapons in the white sharpness now. Tail slicing perfection.
-
I really want to play. I read this thread every day and its making me sad, lol. I need a fucking vacation.
-
awww soera, it's ok. hopefully you'll get time soon! i'm taking my time with it - i'm not in any rush to finish it.0

I finished an fps yesterday and started looking for something else to play in my backlog...ended up reinstalling Monster Hunter: World!
I even started a new toon :(

I'm still 130 hours deep. Thought I was getting done with the quests, but looks like there's a few more that I think might be tied to the Hunter Rank to unlock after the game is beat. I'll probably hit 150 hours pretty easily before I start winding down or at least keep playing till either Sea of Thieves or Far Cry 5 next month.

The Street Fighter 5 Ryu outfit is available to get now if you got a Street Fighter 5 save on your system.
https://www.destructoid.com/how-to-play-as-street-fighter-s-ryu-in-monster-hunter-world-488891.phtml
*EDIT* What a nuts fight. Way more interesting than the initial Horizon Dawn one. I won't spoil it, because it's pretty surprising. Not that it's amazing, it's mostly annoying because I can only get C ranks, which means only one ticket earned each fight, and seven are required for the armor set.
