Title: Grey's RPG Madness
Post by: sergreyjoy on July 06, 2018, 08:47:33 am
Hi folks!

A few years back I compiled a list of all RPGs I've ever finished. It prompted me to go on a quest to see how many I could do in the genre, for my thirst in knowledge and enjoyment is quite large! So I kept track of everything and here's a list of where I'm currently at. For the record, any RPG with a dead final boss and rolling credits is what I consider finished. I don't 100% the things, since the list of RPGs is humongus and growing by the hour, I wouldn't have time to play as many!

Thoughts? Suggestions?

And do you have any gaming related goals or similar lists?  :D

Interesting idea of a list. Drawing up my own list, it's neat to see the divergences here has I'm not really a Playstation guy.

Here's my list:
* denotes 100% completion or all achievements/trophies earned

Blue Dragon* (360)
Child of Light* (One)
Chrono Trigger* (SNES, DS)
Diablo III (PC)
Dragon Age: Origins* (360)
Dragon Age II (360)
Dragon Age: Inquisition (One)
Dragon Ball Fusions (3DS)
Dragon Ball Z: Super Sayian Densetsu (SNES)
Earthbound (SNES)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion* (360)
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim* (360, One, PS4)
Enchanted Arms* (360)
Fable (Xbox)
Fable Anniversary* (360)
Fable II (360)
Fable III (360)
Fallout 3* (360)
Fallout New Vegas* (360)
Fallout 4* (One)
Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
Final Fantasy Legend II (GB)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance* (GBA)
Fire Emblem (GBA)
Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)
Game of Thrones* (360)
Golden Sun (GBA)
Jade Empire (Xbox)
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning* (360)
Lost Odyssey* (360)
Magic Knight Rayearth (SNES)
Magna Carta 2* (360)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (360)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (360)
Mass Effect* (360)
Mass Effect 2 (360)
Mass Effect 3 (360)
Mass Effect: Andromeda (One)
Ni No Kuni II* (PS4)
Paper Mario (N64)
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GCN)
Pokemon Colosseum (GCN)
Pokemon Leaf Green (GBA)
Pokemon Red* (GB)
Pokemon Ruby (GBA)
Pokemon Silver (GBC)
Pokemon Soul Silver (DS)
Pokemon Moon (3DS)
Pokemon Ultra Moon (3DS)
Pokemon Yellow (GB)
Sailor Moon: Another Story* (SNES)
Skies of Arcadia Legends* (GCN)
South Park: The Stick of Truth* (360)
Star Ocean: The Last Hope (360)
Star Wars: KOTOR (Xbox, PC)
Star Wars: KOTOR II (Xbox, PC)
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Tales of Symphonia (GCN)
Tales of Vesperia (360)
Tenchi Muyo (SNES)
Terranigma (SNES)
Two Worlds (360)
Undertale* (PC, PS4)
X-Men Legends (GCN)

And so many just not finished, generally by being distracted away from the game long enough that makes it very difficult to get back into.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion* (360)
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim* (360, One, PS4)

Well that must've taken a while! I'm currently going through Skyrim for the first time and my ''main quest only'' mindset gets distracted soooo much in that game!

And so many just not finished, generally by being distracted away from the game long enough that makes it very difficult to get back into.

Sadly, I got distracted way too much this winter due to many factors and less gaming time. I'm slowly drudging through my backlog of about 10 games @__@;

Maybe 1090 hours on Team Fortress 2 was not the greatest idea...

Are pokemon games considered RPGs?

Oh and Castlevania!

You can do both. I'm at around 1,800 hours in TF2 myself alongside my list above.

Let me fix that, I have a hard time doing tf2, those, AND my castlevania replays over, and over, and over... I'll try though!

That's certainly a couple RPG's you've played...

Mine would probably be well below that, though since it is the more general "RPG" term, it seems that would include the modern Fallout games and such...Might have to see about putting my list together sometime.

I don’t have quite as many finished as a lot of you. I actually own many more RPGs than this, I just haven’t finished them.

Final Fantasy (GBA)
Final Fantasy IV (II, SNES)
Final Fantasy VI (III, SNES)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
Final Fantasy X (PS2)
Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2)
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Final Fantasy XIII (X360)
Dragon Warrior (NES)
Dragon Quest VIII (PS2)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Chrono Cross (PS1)
The Legend of Dragoon (PS1)
Arc the Lad (PS1)
Pokémon Blue (GB)
Pokémon Gold (GBC)
Pokémon Sapphire (GBA)
Fallout 3 (PS3)
The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim (X360)
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX)
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II (XBOX)
Dragon Age Origins (PS3)
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (GBA)
Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance (PS2)
Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance 2 (XBOX)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (XBOX)
Mass Effect (X360)
Mass Effect 2 (X360)
Mass Effect 3 (X360)
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (SNES)

Are we including the Castlevania SOTN-type games as RPGs?
If so, I can add:
Symphony of the Night
Circle of the Moon
Harmony of Dissonance
Aria of Sorrow
Dawn of Sorrow
Portrait of Ruin
Order of Ecclesia

Though I got into a debate on another forum over whether Order of Ecclesia qualifies as a Metroidvania, since it’s pretty linear.

EDIT: Added FF Mystic Quest. I forgot about it because it’s not a game I own, I borrowed it from a friend. Not that beating that game is much of an accomplishment ;)

I'd be hard-pressed to make such a list. While I do love me a good RPG (specifically JRPGs), time is not on my side these days. I get in maybe one a year at best? Just remembering what I played back when I had the time would be a challenge!

There's threads going on another forum about 'gaming resolutions' and 'games beaten this year'. I've been focusing in on that, and so far I'm averaging 2 games beaten a month this year. Which, granted, is pretty low numbers compared to other people. It's pretty darn high for me though, what with juggling 2 jobs, other hobbies, family obligations, trying to keep up a social life of some kind... laundry... you get the idea.

Maybe I should devote next year to JRPGs! I'd feel better about a lower number of beaten games, and I could clear out some stuff I've had forever and not gotten to yet- like Shadow Hearts 3! Loved the first two, but never started the third for some reason.

Gods... it would take me hours to list the RPGs I have finished over the years. And I took a couple to go through some game lists. You can subtract Zeldas if you don't believe they are RPGs... I just included them to be inclusive. Some are duplicates, but I did play them in the different versions and sometimes multiple times (like probably 20+ runs through of FF1 over the years).

151 RPGs completed on Nintendo systems. Probably 2-3 times that many if you factor in my other consoles and PC games...

Despite what my parents and girlfriend say... Time well spent!

If you want the list...

What are we considering as an RPG?

Is Fallout 3 an RPG?  Is Fable an RPG?  Dark Souls?  Anything with a level up system?

I was wondering the same thing.  I didn’t think I’d beaten that many, and started looking at some of these lists and then second guessing myself.

Yeah, because God of War has a level up system, so does Alice: Madness Returns.

Majority of games nowadays feature some sort of experience system that correlates to upgrading skills and stuff.

Ridiculously impressive lists. Bravo!

My question to you is, what is the hardest RPG you beat? Or what us the hardest RPG of all time?

All matter of opinion. To me the Grand Theft Auto series are RPG's. Free roam, do main quests, do side quests, collect items, kill bosses, grind for money. Yep, GTA's are RPG's and no one will ever convince me otherwise. You don't need anime characters for a game to be RPG. Its a genre where it's all opinion based.

Traditional RPGs, my list consists of like Pokemon games, a couple of Dragon Quest games, and the Wild ARMS series.

What are we considering as an RPG?

Is Fallout 3 an RPG?  Is Fable an RPG?  Dark Souls?  Anything with a level up system?

I based my list on if the game was filed under the Role-playing category on GameFAQs or not (plus some games that fell under Strategy as I do consider games like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics to be RPGs still).

It's pretty darn high for me though, what with juggling 2 jobs, other hobbies, family obligations, trying to keep up a social life of some kind... laundry... you get the idea.

I feel you there! 40hrs job and second kid on the way...is time rolling on faster or what?

Maybe I should devote next year to JRPGs! I'd feel better about a lower number of beaten games, and I could clear out some stuff I've had forever and not gotten to yet- like Shadow Hearts 3! Loved the first two, but never started the third for some reason.

I wish I could play that Shadow Hearts as well! Only copies I've come across were all over my price limit  :'(

Some of them I've beat quite a while ago so my memory is a little patchy, but I definitely remember Xenosaga II being very ridiculous boss wise and unfriendly towards grinding. Can't remember clearly about III but it's quite possible that it was rather punishing as well.

Other than that, SMT: Nocturne and SMT: Strange Journey were a challenge, but I adore the series so I won't be too hard on it.

One of the hardest RPG that I've yet to beat though and that I have a personal grudge against is Unlimited Saga. It's on my bucket list....I might die trying.

Not opening that can of worms. My list is based on personal beliefs towards what passes for a RPG. It's not like the RPG police will come and arrest me for blasphemous listing! Lol. At the end of the day, these are just personal goals for the fun of it.

Impressive list, Kashell! Is the Valkyrie Profile series your favorite btw? (Question based on your avatar, obviously). The first one is probably the RPG I played through the most, such a masterpiece! (Jayle is my favorite character <3 )

I'm currently playing through VP2: Silmeria for the first time....I waited wayyyy to long to do so. I really enjoy it, but I must say though that I'm a bit dissapointed with the character roster and the very generic cast of non-story Einherjars you find. It doesn't necessarily breaks the game but definitely makes it sub-par to the original.

Thank ya! The series on the whole isn't my favorite, but Valkyrie Profile is easily one of my top five games of all time. When I created my first account on a gaming website, I was playing Valkyrie Profile at the time and went with my favorite character from there - Kashell. It's the one game I try to play at least once a year.

Silmeria is great, but its traditional approach to RPGs makes it feel  different from the original. Still a blast. Covenant of the Plume was the most surprising. I went through it four times in a row back to back.

Nicely done!

I'm working on beating some more RPG's myself, currently playing through the Shadowrun series. I already finished Returns and I'm close to finishing Dragonfall.
