Title: What kind of game collector are you?
Post by: trinitis on November 29, 2012, 07:25:12 am
Just curious, as I can see a lot of your game collection totals on your posts.  I see a lot of people over 1000 games, and I can't imagion getting that high.

I, personally, only collect the games I enjoy and want to play/replay.  So everything in my wishlist is games I actually want to play and keep (from past experience and/or sequals to a series I liked).

So are you a get one of every game person?  Or just games you like?

I only buy games I like and intend to play - still means I own over 1000 games! Maybe I should try to have narrower tastes ;D

My collection mostly consists of NES carts, early rpgs (Master system and PS1), and Dragon warrior/quest stuff. I have some other stuff too but its not as important as whats listed.

I typically collect games with the intention of playing them. My NES collection is an exception because I was going for a complete collection when I first started collecting. There's some garbage here and there, buy I'd say 90% of my collection would at least be considered a 7/10 or higher.

The more reviews you look at, the more recs you get from youtube users, etc the more you'll find to buy. Trust me, there are a ton of really great games that you've never heard of out there just waiting for you to buy them!

I normally just buy games that are cheap unless it's one that I really want to play and then I'll spend more on it.

I only buy games I like and intend to play

Pretty much this w/ 2 exceptions:

(1).  If it's like a yard sale, or something, w/ a bunch of games (even for systems I don't have/know about) at ~ $1/each...I'll usually pick 'em up, and

(2).  The occasional (*Usually*) N1 LE pre-orders from their on-line store (ex. Hyperdimension Neptunia & Hyperdimension Neptunia: MK-2...(and in the near future) Hyperdimension Neptunia: V(ictory)); that I'll sometimes pre-order multiple copies of in the hopes of selling them for a (hopefully/usually) tidy profit later on...

I buy pretty much anything I can get at a decent price, though I'll usually pass on sports titles unless I can get them for less than a dollar.  Wide swaths of my collection are games I'll never play or may only play for 5 minutes, but I don't mind.  I like the collection aspect of the hobby as much as I enjoy playing these games, so I don't mind crappy games in my collection as long as they contribute towards presenting a truer representation of that console's library (not just the best or most rare titles).

I mostly collect systems but i go on kicks like right now i am on a n64 one and before a snes and before an atari and so on. This is how my collection grows i get hooked on a system for a few months and by what ever game i can, trying to get rare ones a good prices.

I'm similar to Darko, I started collecting with the idea to get a complete NES collection, but after a while of getting tons of cheap crap I realized that I wasn't having fun doing it, so I stopped that and just started buying games I wanted to play, regardless of the system.

That's how I started getting a bunch of systems (and how I want to get a couple more at least) with a selection of games for each. I do occasionally still get games that I don't enjoy, but it's generally through bundles or because I thought I'd enjoy it and it turns out not being fun... or in some cases I get games because they're funny bad like shaq fu and superman.

I'm like disgaea, minus the last part of the second part.  I'll only pre-order a limited edition for myself when I do xD.  But yeah, I only buy games I intend on playing except at yardsells.  It's sad to think about these poor games setting in some old ladies basement collecting dust forever.  I haven't gone yardselling in a long time.

I always buy games I know I like/will like and intend to play.  Or, I'll buy games from my childhood -- even if they're not masterpieces --  just for nostalgia's sake.  If there's a crap game in my collection, the blame falls on my boyfriend, not me.  ;D

I know it sometimes look like I'm all

but these days I only pick up stuff that seems remotely interesting or hard to find.

I also just buy items I intend to play at some point, even if it's out of curiosity (just bought Kirby's Mass Attack since it's on sale for $10; never got into the Kirby franchise, but figured it was worth the $10 to try out or gift).

Where it gets tricky is with pre-orders... I'll buy them with the intentions of playing them, but I hate paying retail price when it's likely that by the time I'll actually get to play them, they'll be worth a fraction of their launch price.

But with LEs and companies with limited runs (i.e. Atlus, xSeed, etc.), it always feels like a gamble to not preorder most of their titles...

You mean like that Greatest Hits copy of Wheel of Fortune on PS1?

I buy games that interest me in one way or another. A lot of times because of the art design within games it's incredible sometimes what they were able to pull off on certain systems. Somtimes I just love that style of game and if I can get it for cheap it's worth it even if the game is crap. I also think a reason why I have a ton of games is because I only had a snes until 1999 when I got a ps1 and I still loved snes and never wanted to get rid of the games I had for but it was like, I've had for 10 years, why get rid of it now? So thats just my mentallity

Even though my collection has become gigantic, I only buy games that I like.  I really try to play/complete each of them, but each new generation I fall further behind this goal.

I mainly buy games that I'm interested in. Though there are some that are in there that I thought I would be, but wasn't. Also my collecting habits span entire systems, so I end up with games from all over the place, which is why I have almost all of my consoles hooked to my TV. I try to focus on Castlevania and other series I enjoy, RPGs and SHMUPs, Saturn and GB games. But over years of gaming I've collected from everywhere.

I have the same problem as you. I also only buy what I know i would/will enjoy, but the last couple of weeks I almost bought enough for a whole year of playtime...

I still have a backlog of Wii games and I hope to play atleast one or two now that I have my Wii U

just about anything thats not nes, snes and some what the genesis because the games and the snes console are way to expensive for something that was as mass produced as they were

For the NES, I'll buy any ole game. I wanted a complete collection, but unless I win the lottery I don't think it'll happen. As for everything else, I buy what I think I might want to play, what is a deal, and what is collectible.
For example, I bought Eternal Champions for Sega CD. Do I want to play it? No. Is it collectible? No. Was it a buck sealed?  Yes.
I have a fairly hefty collection and enjoy the the shit out of it. I'll never play half the games I own, but it's fun for me to collect them. I think I enjoy the hunt and thrill of finding a treasure as much as playing the games.

I'll usually pick up what ever I happen to find for really dirt cheap or I'll shop around until I get a good deal on the games on my wish list. I very rarely buy games new, unless I really want them or the price difference between new and used is so marginal I might as well just get it new. For the most part my collection is games that I would enjoy playing or that has a nostalgia factor from when was little. I do try to maintain a good selection of games for each system, but as my main interest is rpgs they make up the bulk of my collection. My resent focus has been on the handheld systems so I don't monopolize the TV.  ;)

95% of my collecting these days revolves around buying newer titles for the PS4 and Switch, most that I play within a week or two of buying. Not only has retro collecting become way too time consuming and difficult, but I personally have the vast majority of retro games I've ever wanted. However, I still do collect retro games, just not nearly in the quantity I used too.

Speaking of retro, I also don't acquire them the same way I did several years ago either; almost all my retro purchases come from ebay now since the time and effort needed to find them in the wild now just doesn't justify what you actually end up finding. I've also been at that point where what I'm after is so hard to find, I might as well start buying lottery tickets while I'm at it since I'm not likely to find a CIB copy of Mario Party 3 while I'm out and about looking.

I do miss the hunt, but it's become way easier to get the games I'm after just by getting them online.

For me it has always been a matter of quality over quantity, so my collection only consists of games I genuinely want and know will play. There's always the chance I end up having a title or two that I'm not particularly interested in, but I always make sure to sell them as soon as possible in order to free up space.

I like collecting im a sucker for the different art work on the games and love to display them. I also love to play them too.I'll buy almost any game for a couple of bucks but the price im willing to pay goes up if the game is worth it. Twenty bucks or less is my sweet spot though.
