Title: Games everyone hates but you love?
Post by: dashv on July 23, 2014, 11:28:50 pm
Inspired by Dreama's post. This is the question in reverse.

For me a game I love that everyone seems to hate is...

Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde for nes.

While technically Brutal Legend and Splatterhouse aren't games that I think everyone hates, I feel like they are games I love a lot more than others who didn't care for the games, as they weren't very critically liked, they didn't sell very well, and really only hit with a very niche audience.  Both I think are super awesome games.  Flawed, but good lol

Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku I for the GBA. Now this game got heavily criticized for lackluster gameplay including fetch quests, enemies are way too difficult requiring spamming tatics, and you can glitch when flying and get stuck, and that it takes a lot of liberties with the story. However, it was one of the first gba titles I managed to beat, and I thought some of the music was pretty good, ok graphics, and spamming bosses and finding new tricks motivated me to replay this game a few times after I originally beat it.  Unforunately, you will struggle with combat until you get Solar Flare, which is easily used to stun enemies for long periods of time, and used for 3/4ths of the game as the primary way to win.

Not sure about love, but I enjoyed Mega Man Star Force on the DS. It got some pretty crappy reviews, but I honestly didn't think it was that bad. As for MM Star Force 2... ugh, that one's a bit worse. Haven't gotten my mitts on 3 yet unfortunately.

I didn't like Star Force as much as Battle Network, but I definitely enjoyed it. Didn't know about 2 though... I should try it and see  :o

Cross Edge (PS3), but, that's always been very much a love it or hate it kinda' thing,

-and-

Stella Deus (PS2) never seemed to get much love.

I enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever. It is quite good, old school style game. I also liked Journey to the Planets for Atari 8-bit, while my friends said it was crap.

While I think Legacy of Goku II and Buu's Fury are far superior, and that I don't really find myself going back to Legacy I all that often, I still applaud the game for what it did, what it tried, and what it did right. It was not only one of the first GBA titles, but the first in the Legacy of Goku series, so being lackluster is excuseable. Plus, I am sucker for voice-acting and FMV cutscenes in my video games, I loved how you heard Goku yell "KAME-HAME-HAAAAA!!!" upon firing a fully charged Kamehameha, how he yelled "aaaarrhhhh" upon dying, and the fact that the game had FMV's taken from the anime^_^ It's a guilty pleasure, but not a bad game - just a game with some flaws that its sequels successfully ironed out.

--

That said, if I should pick a game, I'd say Chain of Memories. I love how that game forces you to think strategically instead of just button mashing till you win, the sprites are beautiful, the FMV cutscenes are impressive, I love the story, I absolutely ADORE the remake..... and everyone else hates the game for introducing the card gimmick^^'

Almost everyone who hates this game has no idea what they're talking about since they've never even played it! It has N64 graphics! The controls are horrible! You die too fast! Sheesh. These kids have no idea what a bad game is. :P

I beat this game from start to finish. If it wasn't for that game I wouldn't even like third person shooters at all.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: A lot of people seem to have developed a hate for this game. Honestly my only complaints about it are that the Swimming could be better and Fuck that escort mission.

The only thing I disliked was the Stamina Meter and the escort mission. The only Zelda game I do dislike is Wind Waker, at which I seem to be the only one.

I would rather there not be motion controls, but at least they committed to it, unlike Twilight Princess which just had motion controls tacked on at the end.  I agree with you on Fi as well, Navi is annoying, but Fi takes it to a whole new level.  I would probably put Skyward Sword somewhere in the middle of my top Zelda games list.

On the topic of Zelda, Zelda II and Four Swords Adventures are kind of the outcasts in the series, but I enjoyed both games, especially Zelda II.

The games I mentioned above are not really games people hate though; the game that I love that people hate is Hydlide.  I actually enjoyed the game enough to where I played and finished it twice.

I loved Zelda II, I played through it multiple times. Back when their were only 2 Zelda games, that's what we had. So because of that, I didn't have a problem that it was different. And there weren't a whole lot of "big adventure" games out there on the NES back then, so I ate it up.

It seems to me that Sunshine is one of the those games that divides people into two distinct categories: those who like it and those who hate it. Its the mario game that greatly divides the fans of the series, and besides I believe that its a awesome experience and is my most favorite game!

Generally though, it is not really whole games I love that everyone else hates, it is more often just sections of different games. Like, I like the Water Temple in Ocarina, everyone else hates it; I like the card battle system in Chain of Memories, everyone else hates it; I like Marble Zone in Sonic 1, everyone else hates it, etc.

I agree. It wasn't a good game, but it wasn't as bad as it was made out to be. As a fan of the Aliens franchise, I admit I got some enjoyment out it.

I would have to say I rather enjoyed the Final Fantasy XIII series. I'm only partially through Lightning Returns, but I've enjoyed what I've played of it, and XIII-2 had its moments.

I actually really like XIII itself. In fact, I would say its my 3rd favorite in the main franchise (VII, X, XIII). That's right. I'm putting XIII above FF III(VI) and FFIX.

Pit Fighter!  I love the feel of the arcade version, I think it just gets a bad rap because of the home versions.  It was too bad about the emulation on the PS2 version, that just made it worse.

BUBSY for the SNES and GENESIS is my go to game. Everyone trashes on the whole series because of the dreaded Bubsy 3D. But the original for SNES could probably sit in my Top 5 SNES games.

I wouldn't necessarily say I "love" the game, but I enjoyed DmC: Devil May Cry.
I realize it's faults with a combat system that's hardly as deep and intricate as it's predecessors and a story full of awful dialogue and dumb anti-corporate undertones, but that aside it's a pretty good hack n' slash.

I didn't go much farther than just after the swimming part. The folks talking to me in scrambled dialog I would only be able to understand after I beat the game once and replayed it got to me.

I like to bleed a game dry the first play through. It was clear this game would require a second play through to truly understand what the hell was going on.

I've heard a lot of people talk crap about the FF series starting with that game. That's seems to be the "jump the shark" game in the series. It's a point in the series when they focused less on traditional fantasy-elements and more on character-driven stories.

Ninaj Bread Man. Why hate it? It's a basic platformer that wasn't really finished, but was pushed out onto the market. You run around as a gingerbread ninja and beat the crap out of cupcakes, and candy canes, and different stuff like that with basic platforming and puzzle solving.

FF8 is defenitely hard to get into for the aspects of the game. I've been play it on and off and i'm halfway through disc 2 last time I checked and pretty underleveled. I remember watching someone on youtube saying the battle system is this game is just all about playing card games, because of how cards are very important for converting into items, spells, and well as enhancing your weapons, and you can't really beat the game without figuring out how to abuse the card playing system. This also why you need to collect all of the different summons because of their elemental- card abilities to convert cards, and its pretty easy to miss a beginning of the game summon like siren, and figure out you can't get her until a disc 4 boss which really sucks. So I think I may have to restart the game so that my team can collect everything and not be very underpowered and easy to kill for those boss fights. But the music is pretty great thanks to uematsu, and what's even cooler is that he just used a roland sc88 synthesizer to compose the entire songlist of the game.

I enjoyed Duke Nukem forever, Im not going to say it's a great game, it certainly should have been better in every aspect, but I did enjoy it for what it is

I enjoyed much of the gameplay, and was surprised that the first-person platforming was actually solid.  There was a decent variety to the gameplay, and the final boss battle was a lot of fun.

That said, I think it was a fascinating glimpse into how much the industry had changed in the ensuing 15 years it spent in development, because you could see the old pieces as well as the new.  Duke Nukem was "out-Duked" a few months before release by Bulletstorm, which  showed that even dick jokes had evolved in the past fifteen years.  Duke's "signature sexism" was less sexist than turning Samus Aran into a totally useless, crying little girl and damsel in distress (imagine if they did that to Master Chief or Nathan Drake), and ultimately felt tacked on and lazy.  I chuckled at a couple of his lines of dialog, but ultimately the game just felt like a relic.  A playable, generally solid game, but an unevolved relic none-the-less.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Bayou Billy is a masterpiece. But "sucks" is pretty harsh for a game that successfully manages to mix 3 genres and have voice samples early on in the nes consoles life. This game was like "Holy shit! Nintendoes what Atarain't!

One that immediately comes to mind is Alien: Colonial Marines. I found it to be way more playable and fun than any review gave it credit for, and the AI didn't seem as horrible as people made it sound. I enjoyed it quite a bit and ended up playing it all the way through with no major issues :)

I was the dork that liked Battle Arena Toshinden and not Tekken that all my buddies preferred.  I might concede these days it's not a great game, but it unequivocally has a pretty great soundtrack and I still find the game enjoyable.  I also remember Street Racer and Chocobo's Racing getting panned by reviews, but I rather liked them.

Oo, this is a long list for me :P

The first would be Aliens VS Predator (The 2010 one) I found it pretty fun, especially considering you can play as an alien, a predator or a marine, but it got a lot of hate :(
Also, with the exception of the Ride/Shred games I enjoyed all of the Tony Hawk games - general consensus suggests that the series took a major dive around the release of Underground 2 and the 7th-gen titles were unenjoyable, but I think they all offered a relatively similar arcadey fun experience, all with an awesome soundtrack to boot :D
Star Fox Assault also comes to mind, to my knowledge the Gamecube Starfox games weren't met with much praise, but I found it to be really fun :D

For me it  there are two major examples of games I love but everybody hates. One for X360 "Ninety Nine Nights"  and for PS3 "LAIR", both I recognize are not great games but well they just seem to appeal to me, N3 basically was the first major X360 release I waited for months after 360's release and even when I admit it has several flaws it mixes some RPG elements with a Dinasty Warrios gamplay that basically made me fall in love, that mix plus the availability to play different sides of story with different characters, some well developed (others not) just made the deal for me, even though most people hates it by the flaws: the bad lip sync, cheesy story and voice acting, repetitive gameplay and bland visuals.

For LAIR on PS3 it happened something similar, it is the game for which I bought the PS3, and with the prestige of Factor 5 it was a no brainer, while everybody complains about the motion dragon flight controls I found them ok , some times  frustrating, but so the Resident Evil early games controls were too, plus I played the game once the patch to allow stick control and improvement on motion was released. Anyways the ability to ride a Dragon, have an on air fight with another Dragon, being able to pull a bull from the horns and throw it to a road full of soldiers and spit fire is a win for me  plus the great production values of the game and 1080p.

I am sure there are others on older consoles (perhaps KI Gold on N64) but these are my more significant cases where hate is too much while I love the games.  :)

This reminds me. Star Fox Adventures is a great Zelda game.  :P  A lot of people hated it, but I still have a soft spot for that game.

One of my favorite games ever is Cubivore, and I remember that one having really mixed reviews, ranging between hatred and meh. For something more modern, how about Chibi-Robo Photo Finder on the 3DS eShop? Once I realized I could just use Google Images for the stupid picture mechanic, the game itself became a blast.

I just found this topic, so I figured I'd post a couple of games that immediately come to mind. And yes, I really enjoyed Stella Deus and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good SRPG.

Ephemeral Fantasia: This was my first game that I got with my PS2. An intriguing plot, lush graphics and an unlikely cast of heroes come together in a non-linear game that might turn off people that are used to linear RPGs. The battle system has elements of SaGa Frontier and Chrono Trigger. Also, there is a Guitar Freaks mini-game that is highly addictive. People don't realize that there was stuff before Guitar Hero came to prominence.

Tsugunai, Atonement: Another over looked PS2 RPG that received a lot of negative feedback. The graphics are a bit dated, but the soundtrack by Mitsuda is totally worth a listen. The battles are tough and the story is a bit predictable, but if you finish it, you will feel on top of the world due to some of the most brutal difficulty ever seen in the genre.

I was in the middle of playing Stella Deus whenever I found out that my cousin had passed away. Not trying to be a downer, but that game allowed me to be focused on something else and like folks have mentioned here, it never got a lot of love.

Another game I always wished they released more DLCs for, or a sequel was Lost Odyssey. I spoke to more people who had something negative to say, then good. I found it to be absolutely great and would have 100% achievements if not for the treasure trove AP, lol.

I liked Star Fox Adventures as well, it was a different approach to Star Fox many people didn't like, and if they didn't have that annoying Triceratops (Tricky I believe is his name) in it it would be a whole lot funner.

I swear once upon a time I answered this thread or one like it and said Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Anyways, the AVGN episode may be notorious but really it boils down to the fact that James was confused and annoyed by it as a kid, and still doesn't understand how to play as an adult.

Could probably think of a million more. Everyone's a game critic. :-X

Yes! Thank god I am not alone. If you genuinly like this game (as I do) do yourself a favor and grab the famicom version. The U.S. version is missing 2 levels and some sexual innuendo. :)

It's the randomness of the game that sucks. Kids randomly disappear, and Jason randomly appears. You could play the game one day and skate through it. Play it another day and the game just wants to make you suffer.

I enjoyed FF X-2. Not so much for the story ... or lack there of, but I enjoyed the job class system ... I mean "dress sphere" system. It's not my favorite FF by any means (that goes to FF IV) but I think I enjoyed FF X-2 more than most. I liked searching for new jobs and trying to find all the rare ones.

Not sure if you could say I "love" it, but I enjoyed it. Also, its the only one I could think of off the top of my head.

Same here. I really enjoyed FF X-2, and I'm not sure why so many people seem to have a problem with it. I realize that it's not at all hated universally, but I still think it gets more criticism than it deserves (from my experience).

I know it was Sega's and Hudson's attempt to recapture Mario Party success. There is something fun about the cards in my opinion. I enjoyed how the VMUs were used.

I have a soft spot for Quest 64 / Holy Magic Century on the N64. Story/characters & presentation couldn't be more bland but I always thought that especially the spirit/level up system was enjoyable and rather unique!

I also really love the SNES port of Doom. Frame rate and resolution-wise it's the pits but for me the awesome rendition of the classic MIDI music almost makes up for it.

Almost forgot Sword Of Vermilion. This one has a lot of troubles and is super uninspired as well, yet I somehow played through this several times.

I blame nostalgia...

This thread introduced me to Ephemeral Fantasia. Wikipedia says it has a plot similar to Majora's Mask, so I'm definitely going to check it out.

As for the hated games I like, something something Siren Drakengard. I'm a bit of a broken record in that regard. I also have fond memories of the N64 port of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. A lot of people dismissed it as a broken port of a janky Tomb Raider clone. They were kind of right, but I really enjoyed the level design and variety. And the bugs made it more fun. :P

Another one that I like that seems to get a lot of bad press is "Devil's Third" on the Wii U. This game is a broken masterpiece, but the online is fun, and the solo play (while nothing special) was enjoyable. I guess it's "cool" to hate on this game, but I keep finding myself going back for the multiplayer. Making a clan, building some bases, and playing some of the drill modes (which are basically, the online multiplayer modes). A lot of people hate on it and they haven't even played it. I love when people can't make their own opinion on a game, they just follow the masses ;D

There are plenty of modes to choose from, but some are broken. Mostly because the melee combat in the game is kind of laughable (roll dodge FTW!). They have been releasing a new mode every week since it came out on the Wii U, and this week the final mode comes out. If you enjoy online, third-person shooters, this one is a good time. I don't, however, suggest paying the inflated prices for the physical copy that can run you $100+. If you really want it, just buy it on the eShop.

If you got a Wii U and the game hit me up. I'm always looking for more people to play with.

I loved the Bionic Commando XBox 360 game, and I fell in the love with the NES version back when NES was current. Both are excellent games.

I've to admit, though: Towards the end of the game when like the entire ground was radiation and you were constantly swinging; got pretty frustrating at times.

I´d say Theme Park. I never met someone who actually like this game or dared to play more than a couple hours.

I really like the game design and simplicity, although i know he aged badly.

I´ve been hooked to the Nintendo DS version, since i think this is the best home console conversion. It lacks a detail or two compared to the original but even so its very good. But when i tell people i like this game everyone says "Theme What?" or just "what the f...?"

I played that game a lot too! It's not bad at all. I was always annoyed how on the harder difficulties you had to do that lobbying minigame twice a fiscal year. Other than that it was fun to build stuff and certainly it being portable is a plus.  :)

Always wanted to like that game, don't hate it. It's just that it was hard to go back to after playing Roller Coaster Tycoon for years. RCT Was basically a more involved Theme Park that was not only on running the business but allowed for lots more creativity, and I was all about amusement parks as a kid. Never could get theme park to run correctly even on a Windows 98 machine. I own the Sega Saturn version, but have never really played much of it.

Theme Park is a bit complicated game, both on gameplay and making it run on newer Windows versions.

It's good to see some people like it too, though!

From what i could see on youtube videos, the older console versions weren't as good as the original game or the DS version. The Super Nintendo and Mega Drive versions are just horrible. The Playstation and Saturn versions were way better and almost identical to the PC, although it seems terrible to design a park using a controller instead of a mouse. The DS has great flow and the menus are very appropriate to the stylus, which fitted like a glove to this game.

About running the original DOS PC-CD ROM on recent Windows, you gotta use the DOSBOX and make a few adjustments there so you can install and play it properly as it was running from an actual CD (while using a ISO from the original game). It´s a bit tricky but it works, at least on Windows 7.

About the gameplay, the game can be short or VERY long, depending on the game style (sandbox, sim, full) and difficulty level (easy, normal, hard). I'm playing it on the sandbox style and even so it's a very demanding game about taking care of the park. The objective is to create and manage a successful amusement park on several countries until you reach a certain money quota. If you choose the "full" style, 9 competitors with high level and the "hard" settings, you could spend months playing to finish the game!

Even so, if you pick more regular difficult levels, the game might be challenging and fun, if you have the patience to manage several parks, one after another.

Yeah I love Knack too.  Gets so much hate and it's just such a fun game as long as you aren't expecting a revolutionary platformer.

For me, I always loved The Grinch for the original playstation.  Maybe I was just really lacking in having better games available when I was a kid but I thought this was a great platformer with really cool gadgets.  I got stuck on 99% so I never got to play the secret mini game that unlocks at 100%.  Still bitter about that.

Do you really hate them or do you just not like sports games?  I don't like 100+ hour RPGs, but I don't hate them.  It's just not my style.

Well, before I started to really collect I guess I didn't hate them I just ignored them because they weren't appealing to me. Now, for the past so many years I've become completely annoyed with them, because they're so abundant. Every time you spot a stack of games in the wild and go check it out, it's sports games.

I don't know that I'd feel the same if every stack of games were nothing but RPGs. Sure, that would get old, but at least it's something that holds some interest with me. I don't mind so much when I find some games that I already have and it's not sports. But it drives me crazy to see sports, sports, sports every time. It's almost like finding garbage, because you know that nobody, not even sports fans, care about all of these old sports games. It's just taking up space on the planet.

Sports games! I will always give them a shot. Baseball and hockey are my favorites. Basketball I don't often like the mechanics. I'm picky about golf ones. Wrestling is like a weird fighting game.

Collectors are the only ones that hate sports games.

I dig them.  I have NBA 2K17 preordered.  I buy a PGA Tour (formally known as Tiger Woods) every few years.  I used to love the NCAA Football games, but that doesn't happen anymore.  I miss those.

See?  I told you it was just collectors.   ;)

Yeah sports games get bad rep most of the time, they aren't all bad though ofc but it's really hit or miss with mainstream sports. Fight Night Round 3 is brutal, as well as the UFC: Undisputed line - in particular Undisputed 3.

Extreme sports stuff though, that's a whole different world. The EA Sports "Big" line is amazeballs, and I miss them.

Silent Hill 4. I genuinely have absolutely no idea why that game gets so much hate. Sure it feels a little bit different from SH1 and 2 (though I find SH3 has a similar feel and people love that one) but it's got awesome intrigue and in my opinion it's by far the scariest of the series. It's the only game in the series I've felt genuinely frightened playing.
(Well okay there were like one or two parts in SH2 but they were just me hearing noises that I expected to be monsters I couldn't see but just turned out to be ambient sounds.)

Those goddamn ghosts that won't die... And the Doubleheads. The DOUBLEHEADS. TWIN VICTIMS. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL THEM. WHO DESIGNED THEM AND WHY.

I prefer SH2 a little more as a game but I prefer SH4 as a horror experience.

For real, just look at the opening. LOOK AT IT.

I rest my case.

Well said. Silent Hill 4 is my favorite in the series. It's so different and so damn creepy.

I love Silent Hill 4 as well, but I think it gets some hate just because of the drastic change in gameplay and controls. The game does have some issues; it was made by non-core members of Team Silent who were working on SH3 at around the same time. So it does lack a little polish in the story, graphics, etc. but it still works really well as a SH game.

My biggest issue with the game was having to escort Eileen all over the place, she wouldn't follow you and would get stuck or damaged and look ridiculous during cutscenes with all that "blood" on her.   ???

I quite like this one too.  Never got around to finishing it, but if you can get used to the controls and give it a chance it is a fun game.

I usually say that everyone is in titled to their opinion; but in this case, you are just wrong.

Dark Spire on the DS got some pretty lukewarm reviews when it first came out back in the day. But after playing it for a few hours, it's a very solid experience for a game that recreates 80's styled dungeon crawlers for a modern handheld.  It also gets pretty difficult near the end of the game, so that probably turns a few people out.

As I'm jumping back into Diablo III a bit lately I'll note that in this topic as well. It's not exactly "classic" but it has put on a bit of age. A lot has changed with that game over time and it seems to be generally well received nowadays (nothing like D2 mind you) but I remember the vitriol spewed against it on launch.

I enjoyed it even at launch, though it was a departure from the series and quite a turn from what it was in mid-development. It still has that famous Blizzard polish and it's leagues ahead over it's contemporary genre brethren when it comes to controls and smooth action. (Looking at you early Path of Exile...)

People had Diablo III?  I love this game. I'm playing through it right now.  I've never played a Diablo game.  That may be why I dig this one so much.  It's the best time I've had on my PS4 yet.

Alot of people don't like Sonic 3d Blast, but I liike it alot. I wouldn't say I love it, but I think it gets way to much crap for a game that doesn't really deserve it. I think it's a technical marvel that could put a game thats 3d and have it still look that good. I also like collectathons, so the game itself doesn't bore me. It's still not the best game I've ever played, but definitely not bad.

I liked 3D Blast, too. Not as good as the Sonic games before, but still fun. And I feel it's better than some of the later 3D games we got on later, non-Sega consoles.

Yeah on launch/well after there was a huge crowd of folks (D2 fanatics I suppose) who were opposed to the direction took in D3 (itemization and auction house, mostly). I agree with them on some points but overall it was and still is a badass game. Especially on console, where I feel the need to have a "meta" build is diminished and unique builds are more common.

Still need to pick it up on my ps4 though, a bit frustrating when I've already paid for the game twice (ps3 + pc)
