Title: Do you focus on Achievements/Trophies?
Post by: marvelvscapcom2 on September 07, 2016, 04:43:55 pm
Do you take pride in collecting trophies and seek them out or do they kinda just happen and you just play the game without trying for them :D.

Usually when I beat a game I treat them as side missions and go for all of them but some are just too time consuming to get :)

for me I just go about my normal play style and if I get a trophy cool if not no big deal. I have 1000+ trophies all received through normal gameplay. no guides, no cheats, no exploits.

I do have a friend that is in the top 6000 in the country for trophies.

I both play and collect for fun. Achievements are a cool extra if you're REALLY into a game and want to go for them, IMO, but I don't play just to up my achievement score.

The first couple games, jax and daxter/sly I got all the trophies for them cause they were basically play the game and you can't miss them. Then I just wanted to see if I could get them all for a game. Now it has turned into a competition between my boyfriend and I. But usually I just play through and go back if I enjoyed the game.

I have zero interest in them since they are pretty pointless. I've seen some people make it out like they are "content", which I couldn't disagree with more, but it gives people goals to accomplish, so I guess it's whatever people want to make of them.  Right now I'm playing Fallout 4 with mods which turns off being able to even get achievements in the new content lol

i didn't think i cared until i tried to play wii u and there's just no achievement system whatsoever.
it's hard to play wii u and give a shit.

so yeah, i like them. i don't focus on them, but i do look over trophy lists when playing anyway.

I like the idea of Trophies/Achievements, nice way to show some kool accomplishments you've achieved. That being said a lot of people take it too seriously to the point where I've seen individuals say: "Game doesn't even have trophies, why bother playing it". As for myself, if I like the game I may try to get all the trophies as an extra challenge. Often it ends up being a good time, if it isn't I don't stress over it.

That's kind of how I do it too. I definitely keep my eye out for trophies and try to go for the ones that I think are interesting. But if I lose interest then I just drop it. I will go for platinums if I like the game a lot or it's an easy trophy to get.

I've had people say "What? You don't do trophies? That's like half the game!" It's even worse when they try and play through games they know they don't like, but will try to get as many trophies as they can.  If I really love a game, I'll try and accomplish more if I can, if it is within reasonable means of normal gameplay.  I try and find all the secrets if I can, but I don't have much interest playing my games on increasingly harder modes or 100% every little thing, or being forced to replay the game multiple times, even if it is a game I like.

I did do the Dead Rising 1 kill a bajillion zombies for the Mega Man Buster, but that was for the weapon, not the achievement and that took me like 3 hours lol

I forget to even mention that side of things, have a friend who is a "Trophy Hunter". He will rent/buy/borrow pretty crap-tastic games, and trudge through them just for the trophies. I feel ya on the Dead Rising deal, did the same thing. May even be doing it again now that it is coming to PS4.

I'm tempted to grab it, but that first game when you go back to it is kinda crap compared to DR2.  I was excited at first, because maybe they were gonna like tweak the game a little to fix some of its issues, but it's just a straight up port.  Dealing with Otis and crap survivor mechanics is gonna drive me nuts lol

Unless it's something easy and has a hilarious name is will not go out of my way for achievements or trophies honestly I don'the see the benefits of it. However I like how Nintendo will treat unlockables  like an achievement system in certain games like Kid Icarus Uprising, Smash Wii U, and Metroid Prime 3 being how those are things that can be used in game.

I can agree with that, it's been quite a long time since I played so I'll end up giving it a shot at least.

No, not at all.

I ventured into modern gaming late and never really cared for the whole Trophy achievement earnings. Not a completest, and would rather enjoy playing games first.

Trophies? No.  Achievements?  Yes.

I have on more than one occasion played through a game knowing I would hate the game just so I could get achievement points.  I have also refused to play through games multiple times to get a missed achievement or playing on a harder difficulty for achievements, but I absolutely keep achievements in mind when playing through a game.

I guess I'm the only one so far that enjoys going for trophies. For modern PS3, PS4 and Vita games, I like to browse through a trophy guide just to see if the platinum is something feasible. Usually, it is. One part of the fun comes with prolonging a game's longevity. For instance, Star Ocean 5's story is only about 30 to 40 hours. However, since I decided to get everything (and had a blast doing it) I ended up getting a 70 to 80 hour play time.

Another (and somewhat similar) aspect is that I don't want the game to end just yet. In Atelier Shallie for the PS3, I seriously did not want to say farewell to the Dusk World so going for 100% trophy completion helped keep the journey going.

The challenge is another fun aspect of trophy hunting. In hard games like 3D Dot Game Heroes or Guilty Gear XRD, going for trophies made me a better player and allowed me to help others starting out.

There are other minor reasons here or there. But overall, I think trophies are fun.

I'm at a mix on it. I like how it works with Steam and I would try to do things on that platform. What I don't like is how achievements have become the anti-cheat. I prefer games that will disable achievements if you use cheats. Skyrim does this for example. But many games now have no cheats. And i can get to a point where I would not care about not getting an achievement to just get past a certain point.

I try to get 100% completion in games, including platinum trophies. With the price of games increasing in Canada to a point where I can't really purchase many new games. Trying to get trophies stretches the lifespan of a game. I enjoy doing it and I get much more monies worth out of the game.

I do pride in collecting trophies/achievements as in my opinion they give me more goals and content than simply "playing the game". I collect them casually and don't stress if I don't get that 100%. They are more of a neat hobby to an extent.

I love doing trophy hunts on the games I enjoy.

The most cool part of it is it often makes you explore parts of the game you would have missed or gameplay mechanics you wouldn't care to experiment. For me it's like seeing the "full picture" of the game as the game developers wanted you to see.

I like achievements a lot. I generally do not care about the global achievement score. However, I really enjoy it in individual games I like. For lack of a better term, it is almost an RPG aspect to games. I always did this on 8 bit RPGs. I have to collect all 150 pokemon, collect every hidden item, and do every trainer battle. In Phantasy Star, I have to buy the best weapon and armor. I will spend pointless time grinding for that stuff when it is not needed to beat the game.

That's what achievements are to me. If I like the game, I don't want to just beat it. I want to make sure every rating or power meter is at its highest. Achievements are just the next progression of career modes introduced in 16-bit gaming.

Now, if I don't like the game, I won't even get the achievement for beating the game. Because, again, I don't care too much for the global score. It's kinda neat. But nothing big.

Focus on? No.

Usually I find it more than a little annoying to have something pop up on screen that is not part of the game. Especially if it distracts me from, or covers up, something important to the actual game itself.

That being said, I will occasionally look them over as some lead to interesting things in the game that I may have missed or they point to hidden aspects of the game. Those I will go out of my way to try. Otherwise, they do nothing for me, except maybe earn a chuckle or two if they have a cleaver name.
Title: My thoughts of Achievements/Trophies & how i feel about Achievements/Trophies
Post by: lordscott on September 12, 2016, 06:24:18 am
No I'm not focusing on Achievements/Trophies and to answer this question even farther if i want to do a 100% of the game including any of my favorite games & any of my all time favorite games & if i want to have a 100% data/if i want to have a 100% save data including any of my favorite games & any of my all time favorite games in my opinions Achievements/Trophies are optional to get and if i can get it 1 or more or all of the Achievements/Trophies on that specific game then OK.

Other then that no I'm not focusing on Achievements/Trophies i mean what's the point of having fun or loving gaming if you only focus on Achievements/Trophies i can go and on how i feel so i leave it here for now & before you ask me only newest/latest gen consoles/handhelds or you may modern games i have at the moment is Xbox 360 & PSP3000 :).

I love to try to get all the achievements in the games I play, but I will walk away from them when it asks too much (time sink, massive boosting, online play, god-like skill/luck).

I will admit though that I have played some absolute drek in the name of achievements (I've 1Ked Monster High and Space Chimps for Godsake),but sometimes that falls into the category of a game being so bad, it's good. And it is always worth a laugh at one of my friend's rantings when he discovers that instead of getting a game like Bioshock Infinite or Batman Arkham City out of my backlog, I've gone and played Shrek the Third.

Still, it's quite satisfying to see those complete scores for games like Tales of Vesperia or Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate on my tag.

I don't usually try to go for all of the achievements for a game, especially when they require you to be online or play on the hardest setting.

But, I did go after all of the achievements in Life of Pixel for Steam and man was that hard! The hardest achievement was to hardcore all 40 levels that it was possible to hardcore which was to complete the level without dying and collect the hidden gem in one run and it was a lot harder then it sounds. I spent hours raging over the Apple II and SNES Levels because they were so long and difficult.

In all, I think achievements are a nice touch in video games and when you get one it makes you feel rewarded for doing the task.

Achievements/Trophies aren't usually my number one priority when I play games. But sometimes I could join with friends in a party to help each other grind for them.

Back before I started collecting and I didn't have as many games I did spend a lot of time achievement/trophy hunting. I just found it an extra fun thing to do in games after finishing them. And there was some competition between me and some others in my school to get the highest Gamerscore. :P

These days now that I have hundreds of Xbox 360/PS3/4 games it just isn't possible. Though I do try to get as many trophies as possible on games I really like, just so the % completion shows as higher than my other games so I can show how much I love it.  ;)

My clan use to call me an achievement whore when we first formed by I have found since I started playing Destiny. I just don't care anymore when I play a game. I mean if I get one great if not no biggie.

I play through the game normally first and after I have beaten the game I will go after the remaining trophies. I have been a completionist for a long time and I feel I really get my money's worth when I earn every trophy/achievement in a game. Though when a game asks for too much of my time with boosting and what seems like endless grinding then I will walk away.

I have never been a fan of the achievement/trophy feature in modern games. I can definitely see the value in them and why some people play games simply to unlock the trophies, but it has never been something that's ever motivated me more to play a game or a game a specific way.

I want more tangible unlockables, than just trophies. Resident Evil games are great at that. After you beat the game you usually get a harder mode, a mercenary mode, or a survival mode or something; and extras like new costumes or a new character to play as. I want to earn something that adds to the game, like that.

I thought this was an old topic I had already replied to, but I guess the subject just came up again. :P

It completely depends on the game. I like to glance at the trophy list before starting something - if it looks like a fun list that's do-able within reason, I'll work towards them. If I see some crazy "beat the game on insanity mode" or "play 100 hours online" garbage, I'll just ignore them. I think the last game I got a plat in was Doom this Summer, and it was a blast to do so. The only semi-annoying trophy was the last one where you had to beat the first level on Ultra Nightmare. But there was a way to skip most of that level, and since it was all that was standing between me & the plat I went for it. :) Now if it had wanted me to beat the ENTIRE GAME on that difficulty, then that would not have happened.  ;)

Some of the most enjoyable plats I've gotten are Doom, Ni no Kuni, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Kingdoms of Amalur.

You know. I have never played FFXIII-2 because my PS3 died just as I completed FFXIII. Your post inspired me to look up the roadmap for XIII-2 and now I really want to play it. I hope they have some cheap PS3s soon, maybe black friday. I'd love to sink my teeth back into PS3 era RPGs.

The platinum for FFXIII-2 was really fun and not nearly as time consuming as the one for FFXIII. I think you'll enjoy it.

Personally, the platinum for Lightning Returns was my favorite of the three to get.

REALLY depends on the game. In general I do like going for trophies and achievements, but it's rarely my primary goal. In general I do really like it whenever I get a little pop-up telling me I achieved something, but I only actively go for achievements if I've done literally everything else there is to do in the game (and most of the time when this happens I'm done with the game anyway, minus a few exceptions).

I enjoy challenging or interesting achievements to go after, or weird obscure ones that you might not have attempted otherwise. I used to be really bad about them on 360, trying to play shitty games with easy achievements just to get the score up, but I haven't had that mentality in years now and just enjoy them as a side thing, if they aren't there no big deal at all.
Title: Re: Do you focus on Achievements/Trophies?

I have run into some instances where you cannot get an achievement anymore, but they aren't disabled.

Nuclear Dawn has some time sensitive ones, such as killing a Developer in a certain year. There aren't that many people on these servers, so it is difficult to even know if a dev would show up and/or if you would get the achievement if you killed them. Killing Floor has time sensitive achievements also, but it is only on the description. For example, there is one to get an achievement killing various Christmas themes monsters (I think a Santa also) at a specific time in the past. But you can get those at any time now if you play on the Christmas map.

Red Faction: Armageddon has a bunch of achievements for the co-op Infestation mode, where you just kill waves of enemies. The matchmaking is non-existant and I have never seen any other players on this mode. The mode or maps themselves are difficult to play by yourself. You will die a lot this way. But it seems possible to get all of the achievements in this way, playing by yourself in boring game and dying all the time. But then since there is never any other player to play with, you won't get the revives achievement, or the 4 player one. Strangely, the other bonus mode (Ruin Mode) has no achievements at all.

I have run into some instances where you cannot get an achievement anymore, but they aren't disabled.

There are groups of people that help with that. On either Xbox Achievements or on True Achievements (or their Playstation counterparts), you can set up or join boosting sessions to help belt out all those multiplayer achievements that practically everyone hates.
